Xreas or not?!

Im looking into getting a 2008 T4R for my fiance, and she likes the hood scoop on the sport, I have a 2007 T4R SR5 (which i'll end up trading/stealing from her), but from what I read on here is that Xreas are on the sport and its more expensive in maintenance? or just not as good? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Lots of people love it, lots don't. it seems that it may leak after many years, but it's a risk with anything that holds fluids reall.

If you're looking at modifying the suspension then go with the regular suspension, if you're leaving it stock forever for sure then go XREAS as I hear it does ride nice. It will keep the truck more level in corners. As far as maintenance, it is cheaper to fix the regular suspension than working on the XREAS.

Bottom line is if the XREAS goes bad, then you replace it with Bilstein 5100's and FJ Springs. If you were to decide to replace it with OEM XREAS, then yeah, it'll be big money.

Xres is a sealed system, No maintenance required. As posted previously, they do occasionally leak and are expensive to replace.

XREAS is nice when it works. When it dies, replace with either Bilstein or KYB. I went with KYB because they were cheaper from my parts guy. Install took a couple hours and it rides 90% as well as original. XREAS was going to be ~2k to replace the system from the dealer.

You cannot disconnect the XREAS hydraulic lines connected to the shocks at all. Once fluid leaks out and air enters in, the system needs to be entirely replaced. There is no way to flush or recharge the system. So this job requires working in the wheel well with handheld spring compressors. Additionally there is the Skid Control Sensor wires right there that cannot be stretched or damaged. Same goes for the brake lines. Various shops I spoke with would have nothing to do with a job like that, with them taking responsibility for potentially runing an expensive XREAS or ABS/Traction/Skid Control system

Yeah thats exactly what i was also wondering, I love to off road, and prefer the leveled look as opposed to the stock look, but I also like the hood scoop guess ill just buy another SR5 and try to find a hood from a salvage yard and sell mine. Cause i'll def want to level it and off road with it.

You can easily level a 4runner with XREAS. For folks that do hardcore off roading will need better shocks and thus ditch the XREAS. For minor stuff, the XREAS with a simple spacer lift is more than adequate.

well when do the xreas tend to crap out vs the regular setup? because if its about the same time then i'll have to buy new shocks, springs for it either way. Theres a 2008 sport v6 with 28k miles for $25K. or the other one is
a 2006 SR5 v6 with 46k miles for $22K. So idk which one is better considering future expensives (not mods)

The Xreas on my 2003 limited has 110,000 miles on it and it still works like new.

When it goes I will replace with Bilstein's and it will owe me nothing... Enjoy it while it works... Ditch it the second it fails.

If you buy a shadow mica non scooped with matching grill ill swap out my hood scoop + grill with you.

XREAS is at 84k with more than 5% of that off-pavement in a wide range of terrain (always aired down). Xreas still going strong. God only knows what it will take to wear it out.

That's just the thing, XREAS is unpredictable. I've seen it go out at 60k and also last much longer. I got 150k out of mine and finally upgraded shocks just because I wanted to, not because they were shot.
