Yakima Skybox 16s

Before anyone asks, I've read the previous posts about the Yakima Skybox. I've got the factory cross bars. After reading the previous posts the Skybox 18 is out of the picture, I need the tailgate to be fully functional. So I'm left with the Skybox 16s as the only option. The previous posts about this have been that it is a really tight fit. Only an inch between the cargo box clamps and the roof... Others say that it hits the antenna. I have the 2013 SR5, you think I should just get it from REI for $375 and try it out? I can always return it if it strikes anywhere. I'm looking to throw 3 Boards and one set of skis in there, I think that'll fit fine.

Yakima skybox 16 fit & finish

I used a lot of the information I found here to make my decision on what roof cargo box would fit on my 2011 4 runner. I decided to play it safe and install the Yakima skybox 16 with the Yakima rail grabbers and 48" cross bars. It all worked out. I have the factory crossbars still installed and I think that is causing a bit more noise with the Yakima crossbars when the box is not installed. It could be air turbulence between the bars. I decided on the Yakima cross bars because they raise the box so the latches won't hit the roof and its easier to install ( after first set up). It clears the spoiler (when opening the hatch), the sharks fin antenna, and the sun roof. XM reception was not effected.
Just drove from LA to SLC round trip. noticed a little increase in wind noise. noticed a lose of about one MPG at 70 MPH. not Bad.
NOTE: I installed the Yakima fairing to the cross bar when the box is not installed and this eliminated the wind noise.

I have the 18, but also a full roof rack (Camelback) as it will rub when maxed out on the stock limited/sr5/trail rack and hit the rear hatch.

The skyboxes are awesome.

The Yakima Skybox 16s I bought scraped the paint off the antenna and interfered with the rear hatch on my 2012 SR5. I returned it for the Thule Sonic L, which fits perfectly and has better mounting system, though it is slightly smaller.

add the 36" yakima spoiler on the front bar without the roof box and it will eliminate the noise.

I used the rubbing of my skybox on the lift gate (on factory rails) as part of my rationale for a camelback rack. It made perfect sense of course, at least to me.

P.S. - made sense to me too! these things are great for snow, just throwing crap in there...they holds a ton and can handle a lot of weight. Love dumping 5 sets of boards/skiis and no snow in the truck
