Before you'all go :gun4: me, I can tell you that the time spent here is to the point that wify do not want to see me near the computer ! I have read multiple posts, links to them, etc; including Home - Discount Tire Direct
Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels, "The Hot Sheet: 33 Off-Road Tires Tested", and many others.


Facts:

It is for a Trail driven in Houston, and around. We do not get too much snow (when we do, it is madness !), but we do get sometimes heavy rain. Not planning any lift any time soon, and happy to stay with the stock wheels. Mainly on the street driving, but planing to do off-roading some 10 times per year.

Questions are:

1. Which load rate: C, D, or E...or?
2. Should I go for P or LT?
3. Which tire size, 265, 275, or 285?
4. And, which tire:

Goodyear Duratracs
Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor
Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 2
BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A KO
Falken Rocky Mountain ATS
Cooper Discoverer (A/T3 or ATP)

For you and your ride i would recommend the bf goodrich at. I would recommend the 275 65 17. Just a bit more footprint than stock size without going too big where you will rub. Of the list they are probably the best at tire. They will give you long life, smooth quiet ride and some of the best all around performance available. Inherently, you will get these in an e load at that size and will give you the piece of mind minimizing any tire damage off road or if you are putting heavy loads on the tire. If you want a good tire with a bit more agressive look then go with the duratrac but try to get them with an e load. Cant get a 275 so will have to get stock size. Getting rid of those crappy stock highway tires are the best thing you can do.

You want somebody else to tell you what tires to buy???

We need more info on your offroading adventures to make a intelligent guess since offroading consist of anywhere from sand or dirt roads to trails with big rocks 50 miles from civilization.IMO,Prepare for the worst and hope for the best when offroading.

And in case you haven't noticed ,by the 100 threads already, just about everyone will say what tires they have on then are the best there are as tire discussions are pretty subjective and nobody has tried that many to compare.They just know they are way better then stock. I've ran 7 different tire combos on my 4Runner and just recently went back to what I liked for the second time,which are KM2's.They do ride too rough for most however but I love them.

Out of the tires you listed I had the BFG AT KO's in 275/70/17, which are about as big as you can get with stock suspension without rubbing anywhere, and the Goodyear Duratracs in 285/70/17 and they were both good all around AT performers .

What about the A/T3's, they seem to get pretty descent reviews :hiding:

They are fine. So are Harper's BFG's. So are the ones in the OP's list. I have owned multitudes of tires throughout the years and a dozen or so different brands. Very few bad tires out there with the exception of most OEM tires. Research, get what you think best and in 50K miles do it again. Simple.

No Harper, I do not want somebody to tell me what to buy, but since I see there is great knowledge around here, I wanted to hear people's opinion. Yours, for example, is very objecitve and of use, and that is exactly was I was looking for. Thanks !!!

So far, if I understand the comments correclty, I can go up to 275 without a lift, and maybe the Cooper Discoverer ahead of the pack. ATP are for more agressive off-road, while the AT/3 better all-around ?

In my opinion P tires will be just fine. If you are going offroad often LT tires make sense because they are stronger and will provide additional protection against sharp rocks. But they are more expensive to replace and will hurt mpg a little.
If you decide for LT - C load is enough for 4Runner, E load are heaviest and strongest tires. good for sharp rocks, bad for mpg.

Oh and if you don't have snow and not going to drive in winter probably you won't need to spend extra money for tires with snowflake : )

strange that you don't have Firestone Destination in your list, I've read a lot of positive reviews on them.

I've run about half the tires on your list and would buy the Nitto TG's based on my experience. Personally I hate the BFG AT but in TX they be 2nd on my list as my hatred is all winter based.

Personally I'd get LT's as the tread depth is most certainly deeper than the same make in a P rated tire. You'll pay more but they should last longer and the LT construction should offer a more confident ride quality.

The P tires will be lighter, cheaper, probably give better MPG and a smoother ride.

In the end all of the tires you listed are good tires. If you can get one significantly cheaper than the others go that way.

I'll weigh in real quick, the more information the better.

Here's my experience:

BFG A/T: Two sets, 110,000 total miles driven. A fantastic tire, relatively quiet, great looking, relatively good but not amazing at wet weather traction. I drive and corner hard, and I got 50,000+ miles per set.

Pirelli Scorpion ATR: 26,000 miles driven. This tire is on the less aggressive side of all terrain. These things wore very well, excellent in rain, very happy with snow performance. They are also pretty damn heavy typically, so not great for MPG's.

Nitto Terra Grappler: 4,000 miles so far. They look good, they are relatively light weight, and they're OK in wet weather (but I'm not impressed with wet performance). They're also pretty quiet...biggest worry is tread life.

Bridgestone Dueler Revo 2: 30,000 miles so far. Great tire. Silent. Very happy with tread life and wet weather performance. A bit less aggressive than everything above but the Pirelli ATR. A truly great tire if you don't need aggressive off road traction.

Would you like to explain why....or just that u dont agree...... For what it sounds like BFg might be overkill for mpg and $$ per tire. He is on the street, I'm sure quiet is important.....seems like coopers are louder, BFg can get loud over time.....revos have been know to be good in rain....

I had Revo 2's and replaced them with KM2's and honestly didn't notice much difference in vehicle handling on the road. I'm not sure if that means the Revo's are a crappy handling all terrain or the KM2's are an awesome handling mud terrain?

FWIW I'd only recommend Terra Grapplers to my enemies, I've had bad luck with those tires on my own vehicle and family members vehicles.

On my second set of BFG T/A KO's though and as always pleasantly impressed with the all around characteristics of the tire.

Yokohama Geolander ATS would certainly fit the bill as well. I had them on both stock size and 285s, no issues. After torturing my Duratracs I always recommend them though, killer tire.

Just another option to further confuse you... Hankook Dynapro ATMs are a good all terrain tire. I have them in 265/75/16. Good ride and still some agressiveness.

I read a bad review on this tire, I tried looking for it but couldn't find it. basically they got bad in wet condition after 12k miles and noisy. I will continue to look for the thread and post it if I ever find it

Where did you get that bit of information, every review on here says otherwise and the A/T3 were designed to be less noisy of a tire, thus why they don't look as aggressive as some of the other AT tires. IMHO anyways. :nerd:

EVERY tire gets louder as they wear. That's why when you get new ones they are so much quieter than the old ones. So far after 6K my Coopers are just fine. Have YOU run Coopers lately?
