I had the same 60-65 shakes with the newish 285's. A couple weeks ago I rotated them in an X pattern. Shakes no more.

Im reading various threads and seeing conflicting info on 17" Tundra rims....are these rims I have lug or hub centric? I found a place closeby that has the Hunter Road Force Balancer, the lady didnt know baout a Haweka Adapter. Its $15 a wheel, figure if I know exactly what to ask for and if I need the Haweka thing and they have it, to bang it out tomorrow if they have time. If it kills this highway steering wheel shimmy that is there sometimes and sometimes not, Ill be a happy camper not worrying about if its ball joints, wheel bearings, or bad tires.
Just not sure about what year the Tundra rims are the previous owner put on and if they are hub or lug centric...so I can know what to ask for and if the shop understands what Im saying (or else Ill pass)

all 6 lug wheels that come from toyota are lug centric. one way to know for sure, with the vehicle properly lifted (wheel of the ground) remove the lugnuts. if a rim is hub centric (providing the vehicle which our 3rd gens do, have a hub lip) the hub lip will hold the rim in a centered position. it the rim is lug centric, upon removing the lugs you will see the rim move alittle as it is no longer centered

thanks, took it to only place in town that had the Hunter Road Force balancing machine...they didnt have the Haweka plate (broke it), but said they install lug centric aftermarket rims all day long and it would still work good....$15 a wheel I said what the hell worth a shot...
So the front right wheel was out over 3.5 ounces combined (I think thats what he said) and left wheel combined out over 1.75....he said that definetly would make a difference being that far out, so this should help?
And nice of them to do a 31 point inspection I didnt know for free, said my left rear brake needs adjusted, takes two hands to turn it, and my right rear axle seal was leaking...which a month ago a Toyota dealer did both an entire rear brake job and the rear axle seals, and I already took it back once since I smelled something, and the dealer said it just needed cleaned up and the one side adjusted...but thanks to these guys, I called the dealer again today and Tuesday they said they would take care of it so thats good...I dont want to be paying for more brakes and axle seals!

Try replacing the rear u joint.
My 4runner vibrates between 66 and 73. I have over 300,000 miles on my '01 4runner and have replaced the rear u joint twice. It solves the vibration problem for about 80,000 miles but it creeps back in over time. Any idea what could cause it?
I busted the rear u joint when i loaded about 1,000 lb of fertilizer and seed in the back and hit a bad bump on the highway.

Maybe I just got lucky but my 98 drives smoother than it ever has. Long story, short, I'm trying to sell it so I wantet to try one more time to get rid if the shimmy that I have always had. Mine would also kind of come and go, smooth for a couple miles, vibrate for a couple miles. So I took it to a local tire store for a balance and it came back worse than ever. I made an apointment to have it rechecked. but in the mean time, I switched wheels and tires with my 01. Result, smooth as silk. I noticed that the lugs were way too tight so I switched wheels and tires back one at a time to try and isolate the offending tire(s). As I did, I carefully torqued the lugs to 83 ft/lbs. Like I said, maybe I was lucky but my 98 has never been as smooth as it is now.
I to have the Tundra 17" wheels. I used a old and I mean old bubble balancer to get mine much better. I still have the shimmy as well so not sure and where to chase this down!! I have Discount try it 4 times and refunded my money. I feel a shimmy "wobble" from the front sometimes at slow speeds like parking lot. I have done the 9-3 and 6-12 wheel bearing and nothing moves. Not sure if the wobble is coming into play since it only happens every now and then. And ideas here? She is in the body shop now but should be home soon.

Having read through tons of posts trying to fix my 1999 4 runner's 60-65 mph shaking, I thought I should at least throw this out there to possibly save someone else a bunch of time and money!
Without going into too much history my problem was the aftermarket lug nuts! I recently switched my steel rims to the OEM alloys, I went to aftermarket lug nuts (dealer wanted $180 for a set) but had a crazy shaking at 60 mph! I thought the rim was going to fly off! After ensuring all the lugs were tight, I was certain it was a balancing issue...
I was prepared to go through the whole ordeal of alignment, balancing, u joints, shocks, and all the other said remedies! Ben at Hawaiian Tire insisted "just let me look at it"!
Damn, glad I did! To solve the problem he took 3 OEM lugs and "centered" the rim, then torqued the remaining using my cheap aftermarkets! Problem solved! The aftermarket lugs were just a hair smaller in diameter causing the rim to be slightly off center. By using the OEM lugs to center, the aftermarkets hold just fine but it looks like I'll be purchasing some OEM lugs!

You know the best way to get rid of te shakes on a lug centric wheel. Use extended threaded lugs! Lol that is the easiest way to tell if they are lug or hub centric. Even the oem lugs have extended threads (ET). Just saying. But there is a lot of things that can cause vibrations at higher speeds. Another one that could be if lifted is the pinion angle, loose/worn bearings (there is a lot of bearing in the drivetrain lol), worn bushings, etc.
Happy hunting and I have vibrations at 55 to 70 mph. But with new tires, lift, and panhard (upgraded HD) I kinda guessed I would have some.

Finally a smooth ride! $59.99 well spent.
I had almost forgot about my slight bouncing issue until I recently rotated my tires and there it was, as annoying and frustrating as ever. Costco tried three times (two different stores) to balance them and never got it just right.
Reading all the hub centric stuff I finally decided if anyone can balance them, surely the dealer can... Right? So i took it in and coughed up the cash. I have to give Beaman Toyota service department credit. They balanced all four wheels and there is ZERO shake 0-90mph. I was able to settle in to the 70-80 mph problem area for almost 15 minutes on the way home today and no shake!!!

I had my wheels balanced at an alignment shop and didn't ask about the adapter. I'm wondering if this vibration I am getting is from using the standard cone instead of the Haweka adapter.

My 97 SR5 has a pretty noticeable vibration over 60 and has for some number of years. Anybody have experience with using the the NVH app (Noise Vibration Harshness NVH App Vibrate Software Automotive Diagnosis) on their phone to help diagnose a vibration issue?
