The office park I work in installed new EV chargers last week. Since Kia Motors USA HQ is right down the street, the property management company got them to bring a few of their new Kia Soul EVs out for test drives - it didn't hurt that they baited me with a free lunch coupon. I was sufficiently impressed by it. It was silent, smooth, rode nicely and had plenty of scoot. Based on my driving requirements for work, a Volt would be a better option for me, however.
If there's any one thing that really appeals to me about these EVs and plug-in hybrids it's the tax rebate. Uncle Sam gives me $7,500 back to drive one. California offers another $1,500+ on top of that. How many other opportunities do "angry white men" like me have to get a government handout? The tax rebates have the potential to create really favorable lease terms - for example, a Fiat 500e can be leased for <$100/mo in these parts. After you factor in the fuel savings it's almost like having a free car.
BTW - leasing is the way to go on these cars, IMHO. The technology is evolving too rapidly and the resale values SUCK. Look at what a 2-year old Nissan Leaf sells for.
