magazine worthy. 05 r4runner on 1 tons

Building my buddies 05 4 runner while he is deployed, the hope it's to make this truck a feature one day, weather i can get it that far or not in the time i have I'm not sure. But i will get tons under it.

Quick back story, we met a few years back and started helping each other with projects. We built his runner to 35s on ifs and i swapped 60s and 37s under my zj(grand cherokee) and he has been jealous ever since. He deployed and gave me a small pile of cash and asked me to put put 1 tons under his rig.

Current pics and specs 3 inch toyotech lift, 2 inch body lift, metaltech(i think) rear control arms, bumper and sliders by us, rear frame bob(5 inches) and 35s. It does pretty well, but the steering us worthless in the rocks on 35s, and ifs just sucks.









Plans
-05 super duty axles
-3 ling front and rear
-fox or ads coilovers
-hydro assist
-skids and the like
-add tire carrier to rear bumper
-arb lockers and compressor for onboard air
-tummy tuck


Picked up axles today, and DOM for links. 2x.25 wall for uppers and 2.25x.37 wall for lowers.

Not a fun update, a packrat made a home under the hood and chewed through the bank 2 knock hardness. That was not a fun fix, little bastard's cost me my whole evening. But it's fixed and I can get a little work done this weekend.

Small update. Acquiring parts and stripping axles, I gutted the front axle as well. Picked up a ifs Toyota steering box, an fj transfer case, and all 4 brake calipers. The fj case is getting the twin stick kit and the box I am tapping for hydro assist.






35 spline Dana 60 shaft vs 28 spline Ford 9 inch shaft. Because beef.



Lockers and gears get here Monday, and I'll be making a trip down to ballistic to gather joints and brackets and whatever else we can afford.
 
You having RST convert the FJ case? That's pretty much what I'm thinking for mine. Will probably run just the FJ case at first until I can afford more.

No it's fairly simple to do on your own from the write up they did. Transfer cases are pretty simple, I have done a few of them including the NP 231 in my zj that I have beat on pretty good.

A huge special thanks needs to go to industrial metal supply Tucson az branch. Digging through the rems pile where I found the 2.25x 3/8s wall Dom for all of the control arms ( what a Godsend that was) and started talking to the manager about what I was building. When I told him I was building my buddies rig while he was deployed he gave us everything we needed out of the rems room and gave me a few 20% off coupons for any of the regular stock items. We ended up with all the steel for the control arm we needed, enough 1/4 plate for a belly skid and misc brackets and gussets, and 1.25 solid bar for the tie rod and drag link. Oh and enough 2x4 .25 wall for a cross member and a link bridge for the rear end. And then got 20% off all of the grinding wheels, cutting discs, wire wheels, and flap discs.







I would say that this made me a customer for life, but I already was. Maybe the fact that I was a regular contributed to then sponsoring the build. Whatever the reason they saved us hundreds on metal and I can't thank them enough.

I had some left over stuff from my 1 ton zj build that should cover the last bit of what we need. Some 1.5x.25 wall sticks for track bars, a 3 foot stick of 2x.25 wall Dom for the front upper arm, and some 1 inch Dom for slugging the frame for the steering box

I've never messed with one yet, but I was thinking it was fairly straightforward. I'm good at working on stuff. Looking forward to seeing everything come together!
Oh, and wish I could find a supportive company or three to sponsor the build! Lol
 
Made my way down to ballistic today, I love having a good fab place local to me. They also gave us a great military discount and definitely deserve an honorable mention. Plus I can actually trust the input of the guys there as all of them build and wheel in one form or another. I used them when building my zj(for joints and a few brackets I didn't fab) and I really liked everything I got from them.

Picked up all of the link joints, some bushed Dom sleeves, and all the axle brackets. Everything fit great and I'm stoked to get started on this. So much better than making all my brackets on my zj axle! That thing took forever and the lower links look kinda booty fab:(.

Waiting on a few things to get finished before going back to pick up diff covers and frame side mounts. One step closer. . I went with 5/8 bolts for everything, I shared a 9/16 bolt out beating on my Jeep on Brad's last trip out in his 4 runner, it was stifle shear, but it still got me paranoid, and there is very little cost difference in running the larger bolt. It will just let me sleep better knowing he will have his family in this rig when he gets back.




 
Got some big guns in today, ARB air lockers front and rear, 5.13 gears and master install kits. Brad managed to order these himself but said he went to Motobilt (Motobilt.com) and found the best price. I don't know the specifics but he told me they deserved a special thanks! Though they didn't send any stickers for the rig so I guess I can really only give them some reps in the build thread.

I have never done gears so I'm going to have to try and con some of the local 4x4 guys into coming over to make sure I don't screw up. I have been wanting to learn it for a while, this kind of technical stuff is really fun for me. I mean, I set up helicopter rotor heads for a living so I'm sure I can do this, but since this isn't my rig I want someone to QC my work before he drives this thing to Georgia...











Gotta sell the old lift kit and drove train to find the next big ticket item. All that's really left purchase wise is coilovers and then it's all fab work.
