Shopping around for a new 4Runner and I know of the V8 exhaust crack issues. Test drove one with a cracked manifold and I think it would bug me in the long run. My question is, if it's already gone 150,000 miles without cracking, is it "safe"? I'd love to find out it was similar to the dashes, where some cracked and some didn't.

My guess would be that since a high percentage (40%?) have had issues with it I'm assuming it will happen to everybody whether its at 150k miles or 500k miles down the road. It is most definitely a poor design. Engineers write the manufacturing tolerances and are in charge of quality control too.

as in no visible crack on the manifold? no slight tick as start up?
my 06 has about 115k, and has a very slight tick on a cold start. goes away after a few seconds. has been this way pretty much since I bought it at 100k, 3 years ago.
I don't notice it getting any worse, and no adverse affects from it. I don't even notice it if I have the doors shut/windows up.

147k and no cracked manifold. Kinda looking forward to it cracking so I can have an excuse to jump on some DT headers... these 217k and going strong posts are disconcerting. :shocked:
Both of mine have been replaced and my drivers side one is ticking more and more every day. I'm going to go with the headers option once mine get worse. There's no point in installing another set of stock manifold to me, it seems that they always crack and they're ridiculously expensive besides. Headers are cheaper in the long run even taking labor into account because you'll never have to replace them again.

120k miles and the stock manifold I removed did not have any cracks, although it looked like they had been removed before once I was in there so not sure if they are original. I replaced with DT headers and the headers have a "tubular header tick" sound that is loud so you'd have to have a pretty bad manifold crack/tick for DT's to be the "quieter" option.
