Who has changed the color of Front and Rear Valance

Nice. I have black covers for the 4Runner, emblems, the off road emblems, and the aftermarket pro grille. I’m going to paint the varnish piece on the grille with SEM and was considering using that on the valances. I was glad to see someone else use it and it looks good. Was debating on what paint to use. The obvious best solution is to relace with the OEM valances but the price is too high for just prieces of plastic. I’m hoping someone will make them for cheap like the pro grille.

Used a lot of green frog painters tape, took my time prepping, and sprayed both the front and back without removing the bumpers. Very pleased with the results and happy I didn't remove bumpers. I often have issues and screw things up, so one less thing to worry about.

Looks great. I’ve been considering doing this for a while. Was it the SEM Trim Black that you used?.....like this?.....if so, how many cans did it take you to front and back?

Thanks! Yes, that is the SEM I used. Order from Amazon as well and it comes in a newer looking can than what they show on Amazon, but still 39143. Only needed 1 can to get the front and back. Ended up doing 4-5 coats and have a little extra paint left for touch ups as needed.
 
Unlike most rattle cans, the SEM can will have a nozzle with a flat vertical spray nozzle rather than the typical round nozzle. Makes it easier to apply evenly. Practice on a piece of cardboard to get used to it before you start painting the valance. Don't put the nozzle too close and be patient, don't try to throw on too thick of a coat. Make sure you clean the surface with something like Prep All. Don't see anything smaller on Amazon but they have some other cleaners in smaller containers like Duplicolor or Griots Garage. https://www.amazon.com/Kleanstrip-P...ords=Prep+All&qid=1554498273&s=gateway&sr=8-3

You may also want to put a light coat of primer on it too but that raises the cost if you use SEM primer.

I have an 18 ORP in Silver and one thing that has bothered me from day one is the fact that the front/rear valances are an ever-so-slightly different shade of silver than the body....that and the side “trd off road” badges are a frosted silver color.....it’s all just so washed out looking to me. I already applied some black vinyl overlays on the badges, so they are better.....the valances are next on the list. Silver wasn’t my first color choice when I bought the truck, but it’s what they had (was a leftover 18).

I have researched this to death. Both of this forum and many others. I am going to use Raptor bed lined, the kit not the aerosol cans. Plus the adjustable vari gun not the one that comes with the kit. With the adjustable gun, pressure and distance I think a finer smooth texture is possible. Easier to clean. Not all bedliners are equal, this stuff is super tough, thick enough to take some abuse, and like I mentioned has adjustable texture.

I am also going to spray that section behind the front valance to hide that painted strip. That way it is all black and I don’t have to maintain a wrap in that area, and it should blend visually much better.

At least here in Colorado road sand in the winter can be brutal in this area of and car.

Thinking about doing my RCI skids as well. It holds up much better than powder coating as long as you use the right prep and primer from Raptor. Then easy to touch up anywhere with the aerosol can.

If I do a Lo Pro bumper I am going to use a zinc primer, powder coat, Raptor primer for power coat then Raptor. Should be pretty bomber and still easy to maintain
 
Plasti-dipped mine 4.25 years ago(my build thread) before these new fangled $300-$500+ variants.

That said, ~50K miles later, over this winter it finally started peeling (due to rock chips). I'd say I got my moneys worth and for the investment of time was worth the $<20 bucks I spent)
 
I park in the city where people are a$$holes so I just plastidip mine after they pick up a few scratches. Easy touchups. Will probably move to a more permanent solution at some point though.
 
800 would work, just make sure the surface is clean and make sure you use plenty of water and don't press down very hard. Before putting a light coating of primer, clean it off with Prep-All (or similar) first, then put a light coat of primer on before painting black.
 
I ordered this to prep my parts for the SEM Trim Black. You're supposed to use it with white or gray scuff pads.

With the sanding is the primer necessary?
 
I was planning to buy used silver front and rear valances from a TRD Offroad and paint them black with SEM Trim Black.

Is $85 each a good price? So it would be $170 for the front and rear valances together.

There was a thread but I can't find about where to buy cheap clips as opposed to paying $2 each for Toyota ones. Does anyone know where?
 
i plastidipped mine 3 years ago. It has held up well. It was only last month, I got tired of the fake faux pro look and went back to normal silver valences, and I peeled off the plastidip, and the silver valences looked like new, as in off the showroom floor new.

I recommend plastidip. You never know if you will get tired of the blacked out look like i did.

I used the SEM trim paint on my rear valance and it's held up great so far for the past year. Matches the front valance very well.
 
I went the cheap method and plasti dipped mine. Took about 2 hours and that was 3 coats. I used 2 cans total for the front and back valances. I have about $10 in it. I plan to go with steel bumpers front and back someday so I didn't want to put much money in them.
