01 vs. 05 off road

2001 runner eats the 2005 off road. (stock vs. stock) 05 V8 has TONS more power. If we could just shoehorn the V8 into the old body and chassis the thing would be awesome! approach, departure, and uderbody clearance on the 05 do not add up to what the 01 has. I just took both of my runners on the same off road run and it was disapointing for the 05 bottoming out on the frame (not suspension) in areas where the 01 did not touch anything. I still like my 01 better than the 05 (except for the engine ;-))

Did the mud and both 05+01 were a blast! (05 more fun because of the "insta-torque" feel of the V8.) No water deep enough that is not moving too fast in San Antonio at this time. Rivers are up due to rain. I will not even try to cross them. Low water crossings are fun but paved :-( just being silly tonight with my daughter and my dog in the car. I trades my Audi S4 for the new runner. I definately miss the Audi except when the dirt gets juicy!

Yeah the only issue with the 03+ 4Rs were that they needed to be 2 inches higher (just like clearance of the 01). Other than that you will be pleasantly surprised at how well they do offroad. The TRAC really works well once you get to know it. Go up terrian where you have an tire on ech axle hanging in the air and climb some muddy hills, that will change your mind a bit :D

You can always fix the ground clearance easily with alift ;):

When I lifted my 04 the 1st thing that came to mind was .......

"Why didn't it come from the factory like this?"

New regulations for SUV-to-car crash compatibility made Toyota (and other manufacturers) lower SUV's front bumper/front subframe height to prevent SUV from overriding a car in a crash. Toyota HAD to do it...there was no choice in the matter.

This is where 4-wheel adjustable/air suspension is becoming more and more useful because you can lift your SUV for off-roading while maintaining low ride height on-road.

I went from an 01 to an 03 and after my first trip off road, I couldn't lift it soon enough. 3" puts it about 1/4" higher than the stock 01. It makes a HUGE difference.
