Arent you the one that posted a link to a custom tacos thread where someone gain decent power from headers? I think it was 10hp and 13 tq.

And I did say "headers". My point is that people are always trying discourage people on the forums. They make blanket statements that there is no power to be found in these vehicles, and that is not true.

Do you comprehend the previous posts at all? WHY do you think people discourage others from these bolt-on mods? Again, do you think the $1000+ you spend on I/H/E will net you, what? 15hp? Do you think you will feel any kind of difference at all? What are you going to do with your 15hp? Hunt down Geo Metros? (even they'll give you a run for your money...) Make you car louder so that you *think* you're going fast? :bash:

YOU do what YOU want. But as for me, I will dicourage anyone who is looking to do these "upgrades," because their money will be better spent elsewhere.

1st gen Runners don't hit 18s in the 1/4 mile even when equipped with the V6 in '88. The 22REs were clocked at just over 20 seconds in the 1/4. The V6s were hitting high 19s in '88.

Til the 4th gens showed up with some real horsepower most earlier gens are pretty slow and that includes mine.

I was talking about ET and not your rims. And I wasn't taking shots at your but believe what you want. Remember your post about an 18 second or 17.8 second ET???? I think a 1st gen can run an 18.

So before you start insulting people and using foul language get your shit straight!!

I'll respond with the same connotation. The manner of YOUR post leading up to the statement regarding 18"s was implying something. You take a shot at me, I shoot at you. Simple.

Blanket statements? LOL... I'll say it again since you like to re-use posts: Would you feel JUST AN EXHAUST? Let's be honest here huhwhye. All of a sudden we're talking about tuning, headers, intake, etc, so let's refer to the first post of this thread and keep the initial topic in mind huhwhye. YOU brought up tuning. YOU brought up headers.

$675 for the TRD also known as the Borla exhaust. For what? Sound? For the whopping 2 RWHP, (that the Jardine gets)? Get it?

Keep in mind that I have done most of the bolt on mods available out there for the 4runner, including some weight reduction. I am advising folks based on this 5 year project. In terms of money spent, I would highly suggest turning in your 4runner for the new tacoma/Xrunner. That is my honest opinion. If folks are still interested in the modifications, I readily give my assessment on the performance gain, installation cost and time, links to writeups etc.

I have the TRD headers and here is an example:

TRD headers: $950
Gaskets, studs, exhaust mani bolts: $150
Installation time: 8 hours
Installation cost: Average $500
Total expense: $1600
Total gain in HP: For supercharged trucks 15 hp, NA 8 hp.

Worth it? YOU DECIDE.

w00 it's getting hot in this thread lol

IMO the bottom line is that people want honest opinions on things which is why they come to this forum in the first place. Whether it be based on opinion or fact/data, people come on here to ask questions and get answers from other members. Now me personally, I don't ball till I fall, and funds are quite limited. It's nice to see that I don't have to buy a $700 cat back because it doesn't make enough HP to justify it. I was going to by an intake too, until I saw this "deckplate" mod thing. As soon as I figure out where to get a deckplate around here, I am going to try that before going full intake.

With my other two cars, there is nothing cheap as far as mods, so it is nice to know I can do little things to the 4Runner that don't cost an arm and a leg to get some sort of HP improvement. After all, I can't leave anything alone.:biggrin2:

Exactly. 99.9% of the people on here want the best bang for buck (I guess that .1% is this huh?what? guy.) It's funny to see how all of the veterans steer the new guys away from these type of worthless mods, while the new guys(not all) are all about it. Experience (read: trial&error) is worth a whole lot more than some sales guy telling you what's good for your vehicle.

BTW, what is your CRX set up for? Drag? Track? I had a 98 ITR that I sold (like an idiot). I'm currently looking for another.

Hijack Alert****

p nut,Type Rs are pretty sweet and have become quite rare in recent year as I think I see more Vipers around town than Type Rs.

My friend had a Phoenix Yellow one #219 with a JRSC,Kami header,Thermal 3" and an AEM standalone ECU. Tuned to 5psi it was laying down just under 220whp which was good for a sub 14 second 1/4 mile.

The SC was nice since it didn't alter the power band and remained very flat from 2300rpm to it's new redline of 9200rpm. Very fun car in the twisties and on the autox course. It was still about 2 seconds slower in the 1/4 compared to my DSM but once the road got bendy the Type R took over with it's bone stock suspension.

I miss that car.

Exactly. While I am new to 4Runner performance, that doesn't mean I am new to performance in general. I sold performance parts for years at Nopi and independent shops, and I have owned my CRX since 1996.

My CRX is actually set up for a bit of everything. It was short lived as a show car (I couldn't stand being at car shows, even tough it took a trophy at almost every show I entered it in) so I am revamping it to make it legal for track duty (i.e. my battery is in the back and they won't let me near a track without a cut off switch, among other things). My CRX is my first baby.:biggrin2:

I have a couple friends with ITRs, one of them being a real deal RHD JDM one. My other friend has a turbo ITR (his second one), and his girlfriend has a supercharged ITR. His first ITR he totalled, so he took an EF hatchback and put all the ITR parts on it, down to the ABS and wiring harness and cluster. It's even OBDII now with ITBs. It's ridiculous, especially because the car itself looks like wild ass LOL!

Side question: Is the TRD drop in filter any good? I was thinking of getting one after I do this "deckplate mod" thing, and I get cost plus 10% at Toyota. ;):

Nice. I was hunting for a 90-91 CRX Si for a few months, but gave up, because they'd all either been riced out to the max or rusted/beat on. I've always loved those cars, and just wanted to get one to restore it all back to OEM factory specs and DD it. Oh, well... But I did pick up an EJ1 to DD, so still in the Honda game. I will always "♥ my Honda!" (even though everyone says I'm getting too old for Honda's...meanwhile, their Audi's & BMW's get sent to the shop on a monthly basis and racks up $$$$ in bills) :p I will always have a Honda in my garage.

Yeah, I wish I would've kept my ITR. Supercharged ITR's are sweet, which both you and RonMAIDEN know. I am kind of a N/A purist when it comes to Type R's, so I kept mine all stock. Still had TONS of fun in auto-x and up the canyons. My favorite car to this date. Even the S2000 I had comes in second.

How I miss her...

Ok, NOW the hijack is over... :D

As far as your last question goes, I would purchase a TrueFlo filter. I do not have a deckplate mod, so I always buy OEM paper filters, but if I had to go aftermarket, TrueFlo would be the only brand I'd get.

Ouch! LOL that's expensive!

Well that is certainly not worth it. But I would say it would be worth $500-550 if the install was easier. And the install is a snap when the transmission is out while replacing a clutch. Otherwise I probably wouldn't bother. I definitely wouldn't pay anyone to do it for me.

It also helps to find a deal on the parts.

It pays to do your own work and be resourceful on buying parts.

I love my Honda too...and my Datsun...and my Toyota. I have the japanese big three.:D

Love your Type R, and I'm 30 and still have my car toys, and they aren't going anywhere.

/thread jack

Now as far as the filter, I will need to do some research on the TrueFlo filter. I've never heard of it. Since I only use just factory Toyota parts including my air and oil filters I figured the logical step up would be a TRD filter. I don't want to get one though if it is just hype. I'm sure it's a bit expensive retail, but I get an uber deal at Toyota so I guess I will go from there.

After reading all this, I'm holding off on exhaust for the time being though haha
