05 4.7 V8 has intermittent extended crank time on cold/hot starts.

Well if it isn't supposed to push fuel to the rails until it starts cranking, then I guess that I'm good!

I had 3 days of normal starts (1-2 seconds), and then today it went back to long cranks (around 4 seconds) I also tried priming the pump before starting to reduce crank time, and I got 2 codes this time P0441 and P0455 (Evap incorrect purge flow and leak). I cleared the codes and started it again and they didn't come back on and it drove great. This evening I started it and it cranked long and then smelled like gas. I'm at a loss... I couldn't find any evap leaks, and everything checks out how it should. I also replaced the gas cap because the old gaskt was getting dry and starting to crack. Any thougts with this info?
 
Did you fill up just before having this problem? I've read that the tacomas can have similar emissions related issues from someone really topping off the tank when filling up...
 
Alright, just to recap on what I have done so far...
  • Tried ethanol free gas (got a bit better mileage)
  • Did not overfill for a couple of fill ups
  • Replaced Spark Plugs
  • Checked alternator/battery (both good)
  • Starter is cranking strong
  • Cleaned TB and MAF
  • Replaced fuel pump assembly
  • Checked full evap system (while in park at idle) and couldnt find any leaks
  • Checked fuel pressure regulator (it holds vacuum)
  • Checked fuel pressure (sits at 0 until engine turns over, and then maintains steady 42psi, and holds 42psi for 10+ minutes after engine is turned off)
  • Tried a fuel system cleaner (Seafoam treatment - I just did the 3 part treatment before an oil change and spark plugs)
  • Replaced gas cap (Old cap was ok, but gasket was starting to dry out and crack)
  • Checked/swapped all fuses and relays related to ignition and fuel system. (Didn't have any bad ones)

I am still having the same issue. Some days it seems good, but then other days it seems like every start sounds bad.

I think you need to somehow monitor what the computer is doing when this happens, it's possible that the computer momentarily is not sending the correct info to the ignition process when you have this issue, and thus not getting a spark at the spark plugs.
 
So after more time I have narrowed it down to warm/hot starts when I have the issue. I originally thought it was only with cold starts, but those are usually good. I have a theory, but I'm not sure it if totally makes sense, so hopefully someone can tell me.
Could bad contacts in the starter cause an extended crank? I'm wondering if the slight expansion pulls the worn contacts out of tolerance and creates the symptom of an extended crank. Is that even what really happens when the contacts are going out? Maybe the code I get is from the engine taking in too much fuel as it cranks. Any thoughts? Thanks!
 
Have had my 05' for over two years now and it has had this problem since day one.
Couldn't tell you why, when, or where it happens.
When it feels like, and anywhere is more like it.
Have never had a problem with it not starting. Can go a week or more without doing it at all and then it can happen 3 times in a day.
Not looking for any answers here, just letting the OP know I have not had any issues after 2 plus years.

Thats unfortunate to hear that I'm not the only one... Last week I had a problem where it kept cranking until it stopped on its own. I turned the key again, and it cranked for 3 seconds and then started. It has never completely failed to start though. Do you ever get any codes?

I know it has been a while since I have posted, but I still haven't figured out the issue. :dammit: I have done some additional research and also found more exact times when I have the issue.
I have a very long crank time on warm starts. My first start of the day (or when the car has been sitting 10+ hours it starts up how it should. If it sits 15 min - 10 hours and I try to start it it cranks for a long time. The 05 will crank for a while without holding the key forward (kinda like push start), and it is not uncommon that I have to turn the key twice to get it to turn over. Ex: I turn the key and sit and wait as it cranks for 5-10 seconds on its own... it doesn't start, so I turn the key again. It then starts several seconds into cranking for the second time.
I read on an FJ forum that someone was having what sounded like the exact same issue (although it is a different engine). They were battling it for months with the dealer and threw a ton of parts at it without fixing it. Eventually the dealer replaced all of the injectors and it fixed the starting issue.
Could that be the problem with mine? It doesn't seem like I have any kind of injector issues, and don't see how that would cause it to crank that long... but who knows? I could buy an injector rebuild kit for fairly cheap and give it a shot. Has anyone on here ever rebuilt injectors for a 2uz-fe or 1uz engine? OR does anyone have any other suggestions?

As I started reading the thread, I said to my self "injectors!". You probably have a leaky injector. If you can afford to have your car down for a couple weeks or if you have a second car, pull the injectors and send them off to get rebuilt. You should be able to get it done for less than $500, which I think will be cheaper than OEM replacements.

Do some research, there are a couple of good reputable injector rebuilders out there.

Thanks for those links, those say they are OEM flow matched, but are they OEM quality? Neither of them said Denso, unless i'm missing something. The denso ones i've found have been at least $75 each.

Can someone explain to me how fuel injectors cause a starting issue like this? I'm not getting how that would really effect it.

If a fuel injector or injectors gets clogged up, the fuel pump needs to work extra hard to force fuel into the chamber for combustion and that could be your extra seconds of cranking.
 
My 05 has this exact problem and I haven't figured it out yet. I am leaning toward the evap canister because of the incorrect purge flow code, It could be something as simple as one of the vacuum actuators getting stuck sometimes. I am more concerned about the codes than the warm start issue, but they both started at the same time so they seem related.

I have some emissions leak codes too. I don't see how anything with the evap system can affect the starting though.
 
An evap fault WILL cause this concern! As a ford mechanic i see this a lot with faulty purge valves. If the valve is stuck it will draw a bunch of fuel in causing an extended crank. Not saying its exactly the purge valve but yes evap fault would be suspect. When a valve is sticking open it can soak up your evap canister. Try disconnecting the canister and see if you can smell or have any fuel inside of it. There should not be any 'liquid' present

I have a 05 v8 and have had some related problems. About three 3 years ago I started my truck after school and as soon as it reached a cold idle rpm it immediately cut-out (as if ignition was turned off or fuel pressure was lost), but the motor didn’t die. It went down to almost zero rpm and then revved back up to normal idle speed. It didn't flash any codes and hasn't done again.

Then, last year, I was leaving for school and got the same three codes you got (P0441 (Evap system incorrect purge flow), P0455 (Large evap system leak), and P0456 (Small evap system leak). I turned my car off and reset the computer with my scan gauge, but upon restart the problem was still there. I ended up staying home and started browsing the forums for solutions. What I found was that the gas cap was my issue. I cleaned off the rubber seal on the cap and the sealing surface on the truck, and have not had problems since. These aren’t the same problems you are having, but I did throw the same codes and the gas cap has a part in the gas vacuum system. I don't think a gas cap could cause a hesitant start, but for a cheap part it might be worth a try. I'm not sure if these are just random bugs or tied back to the gas cap, but it's something that hasn't been mentioned.

It seems like this is a specific 2005 model only issue when Toyota was trying to experiment by changing the internals of the 05 model to make it better, but ultimately changed it again for the 06-09 models.
