05 4Runner vs Drunk/High Driver...

sorry to hear about the accident. glad you are okay, though.

everyone seems to be optimistic about the insurance company totalling the car. but maybe it ain't so.

my parents had a very similar accident (from the pics anywayz) last year and the repair bill came about $11,000. Theirs was 2002 t4r, btw. Since the market value of that car was around $19,000, they wouldn't total the car - they simply paid the repair bill.

now, I'm guessing that your car is worth at least $20,000 or quite possibly more. If the repair bill is substentially less than $20,000, which can happen, the insurance company would rather pay you the repair bill, rather than totalling the car. Because it's cheaper for them. It's all about money, I guess.

So my advice would be to find out the estimate repair cost as soonn as possible and take action before the insurance company. You might even have to hire a lawyer.

Wow Mandercruso, sorry to see you had to go through that. Glad everyone was okay too. The 4Runner definately looks like it did it's job though especially if you were going 50 at impact. Those pics can really make everyone feel good about hauling their families around in a Toyota though, that's for sure.

I hope everything works out for you with the insurance company. If there is frame damage it will be totaled. If not though it may not like neowig mentioned.

Good Luck and glad your alright!

sorry to see the damage... glad all are ok!

these pics are good illustrations of an offset crash. i noticed the drivers side door appears to be straight. speaks volumes of the crumple zones in front of the passenger compartment.

it will be close as to whether she's totaled or not. it depends on state ins. law as to how a vehicle is totaled. usually it is actual cash value minus the salvage value compared to total repair cost. or if there is significant structural damage preventing the vehicle from being restored to pre-loss condition

looks like there is oil on the ground, how long (if at all) did the truck remain running after the collision?

good luck

50MPH? Im willing to bet my T4R that its totaled. Hope your insurance takes care of you in a quick mannor.

Thanks for the well wishes guys. I should find something out from the insurance company today or tomorrow. I talked to the body shop I had the 4Runner towed to (friends of the family) and they don't think it's totalled. The frame doesn't appear to be bent, just brackets were stripped and that will require sheet metal work. I'm not sure how to find out what my vehicle was worth but I know the kkb Private Party value is around $28k. To be totalled the damage has to be 70% of the car's worth, which would put damages around $19600... which is VERY unlikely :cursin:

Oh well, I've got my health so I should be thankful. Dang stupid drunk drivers with no insurance!

The truck remained running for a minute at the most. As soon as we gained our composure I told my friend to turn my car off and get out asap.

Glad to hear you're OK. Good luck in recovering from this.

ps. It's not clear from the pics. What make of vehicle hit you? Is it a S10 pickup and it looks totalled.

Not to sound like a dick or anything, but your insurance will for sure go up

Not even a remotely true statement..... Being in an accident (even if the other driver is uninsured and your insurance company has to pay all of it) does not mean your insurance is going to go up.

I had someone hit the back of my 05. .... Not a terrible impact and not too much damage. Total repair bill was $7000. Driver that hit me was uninsured. I paid my deducticle. My insurance stayed the same.

I rear ended someone about 3 years ago ... completely my fault. I was driving a 96 Acura 3.2 TL with 150,000 miles on it. Total repair bill on my car was $6,600. I paid my deductible .... insurance paid the rest. My insurance went DOWN by 20% two months later.

One point of note --- it helps if you have multi-line insurance. If you have your homeowners and car insurance through the same people, you are less likely to get rate hikes.

As for an experience that took place in my friends car, we were rear ended, and b/c my friend was in an accident, the insurance co. considered him a liablilty (for some efing reason) and his premiums went up

Go figure

Same thing has happened to me and my family. I have been rear-ended twice in the last 3 years, and now the insurance company considers me a 'high risk' driver for accidents even though I was just sitting at a red light both times when I was hit.

Isn't that just b/s. I mean how am i a risk, just b/c i was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Just being a victim is a crime now.

Nice right

It's crazy to think that if you were drunk, and decided to take a nap in your back seat, while your car parked (no key in the ignition), and you get hit by another vehicle, you're still liable.

But, I think it's true.

It definitely can go up ... but it doesn't always. It depends on a lot of factors such as length of time you have been with the insurance company, number of previous claims, what kind of other policies you hold, and what state you live in.

Allstate has a program that for every year you go without an accident, your deductable goes down $100.00 eventually to zero. The same program locks your rate and will never increase your premium no matter how many accidents, who's fault, or how many tickets. Just FYI.

Wow...that really sucks. I hope everything works out for you.

Could I ask what the experience of the air bags deploying was like? I've heard of people getting pretty beat up by air bags going off.

Once again, good luck with getting this straightened out, and hopefully quickly!

I was the passenger and seat belt locked in so quickly that the airbag didn't touch me. I was on my cell phone at the time and it knocked the phone out of my hand but that was it. I've heard of people getting severely burned from airbags but mine was not hot at all.

The airbag hit the driver in the chest but not with severe force. His seatbelt locked up very quickly as well, which prevented him from flying forward into the airbag.

I'm definitely impressed with and thankful that I have (had) a Toyota 4Runner!

i admire your honesty.

wife swerved on interstate to avoid some big object years ago and hit guard rail on the right. metlife incr'd our rate. appealed to some insur commission in boston. the surchrg was reversed.

now a friend's son (just returned to cmu) hit someone driving his Tacoma making a turn, completely at fault. his son isnt listed in his insur policy. he was told by someone that there might be an insurance law (in some states?) that covers "visitor", me never heard of it. anyone?

R.I.P.

R.I.P. to my 2005 4Runner Sport. Damages came out to be $18,121 so State Farm totaled it. Here's the numbers they gave me:

$27,675.00 (value)
2,490.75 (taxes)
82.50 (title, license)
- 1,000.00 (deductible)
_________
$28,248.25 (what State Farm will give me if I let them have it)
- 6,500.00 (salvage)
_________
$22,748.25 (what I could get if I kept the vehicle)

$28,248.25 minus what I owe on the loan will put me with the same down payment I originally put on the car. I'm so glad they totaled it!!!
