05 Undercarriage Rust

Does this amount of rust for a 2005 look like more then most of you guys have? Anything to worry about? I live in New England and truck is from Vermont so roads are salty... Was thinking about wire brushing the best I can and coating with CHASSISCOAT BLACK... What do you think?

Just from that pic, much worse than mine but I live in Colorado so the Mag Chloride may not affect it as much as salt..who knows.

If you wire-brush it, leave it for a few days to see if the rust reappears. You don't want it to rust under a coat of anything, unless it is a compound that stops rust from forming.

After I wire brush the parts I am going to paint, i would still have the debris from wire brush on the frame. So i need to somehow get that off, but then if I power wash it off wont that water create more rust?

we used to use something like this on water tanks & piping in underground chambers with good results, maybe it wook work on a frame. Rust-mort

There is a company called SEM that makes a product called Rust-Mort. It chemically converts rust to an inert, paintable surface. I have used it and it works. Try google for a supplier.

that is some serious rust, if it was me, id use something like the chassis rust converter something similar suggested earlier.

I know I have some rust as well, but I dont think it is that bad. Being in NE im sure you have more winter weather/salt than here in STL. However when it does snow/ice here they really dump the salt on the roads. Im curious to hear what if anything you end up doing.

i tried to take a wire brush to a section but that didn’t do anything at all. also sprayed a rust neutralize on a section and letting it dry now will update when that dries

Wire brush didn't do much for me. I put a wire wheel in my cordless drill and got a little more off, but that was really too hard to control. If I had a handheld grinder I might have been able to get more off.

So I painted the worst of it with rust converting paint. Hopefully that will slow it down.

I wire brushed mine to get off the old rust coating, paint, and rust flakes, and then got the innards and underside treated with Rust Check. Then I got a couple of cans to do touch ups in really hard to reach spaces. Did it about a month ago when it was still sunny and hot--and got a good highway drive in when it was sunny and hot to really heat it up and get it to soak.

Anyway, it'll keep any rust from spreading in the short term and protect all areas from salt and slush, and when I have the time next summer to take things apart and treat them and POR-15 them, I'll do that.

how would you have it replaced? i called toyota today. they said my rust warranty expired Oct 6th. Go Figure. :nono: but im not sure they would cover it anyways

You should've brought it in to your dealer when you first saw it rusted.

That is more rust than my 99 has. What I did was the wire brush, wire wheel on my drill and sandpaper combo. Then I sprayed rustoleum rust stop paint. Then I covered that with rustoleum underbody covering. Before this winter I am going to spray some type of rust prevention spray on the underbody, I am just not sure what yet. I heard of one from a friend who has a jeep. This guy mixed wax with keroseen and a lightweight oil. He mixed that all up and once liquid sprayed it on the underbody of his vehicle and it worked amazing supposedly. He lives next to the ocean too and he covered a bare metal pole with the mixture and left it in the tide for a while and it showed no rust.

If that were my 4R, i'd have it replaced.

Unless Toyota does a recall like the Tacoma and Tundras, that isn't going to happen.

My '05 Tacoma looks like that. My 4Runner isn't that worst.

I second the use of POR-15.

I'd do this:

1) wash the undercarriage well -- get off any dirt. Let dry fully.
2) brush off any flaky metal/rust with a stiff wire brush, like this:

3) paint with POR-15 (google it). OK to paint it with a brush. It'll convert the rust, kill it, and leave a hard shiny black finish.


I have just a little rust on the frame on my '08 4R, and I'll do this next year.
