05 V8 - 22mpg!!!

I just did my first tune-up and expect to be heading back to Mammoth in August. Hopefully with the engine broken in and the synthetic oil I might see a bit better mileage.

Will resetting the ECU by unplugging the battery help or hinder when I head back up there? Normally I just drive around town with little freeway driving.

I get 19 mpg on the highway (unloaded, except for my muscular body at 210 lbs ) with 34 lbs of air in tires and cruisin at 65 mph. That's with 20K miles on mine and I only run 87 octane. I thought it was determined that the VVTi didn't add anything to mpg? I have found that wind resistance can change your mileage by 2-3 mpg and temps can do the same. Normally I average on my vehicle 17.5 combined and 19.5 on the computer. I love that computer mpg

Ditto. I just got 19 MPG on my last tank of 95% highway driving. I kept her to under 70 MPH, used 87 octane, and have the Revos at 38 PSI.

Just a note, according to GPS calculations correlated with highway markers, my odometer under-reports 3%. So I add 3% to my calculated mileage.

This also means my trip computer is only around 7% optimistic, rather than the approx. 10% I thought before.

ON EDIT: The mileage was on a basically flat round trip, using A/C, only me & no load & only very minor "hot-doggin". Last winter I did the same trip w/o A/C I got around 20 MPG with a couple passengers & minor load.

The Avalanche does about the same. Had a 93 suburban that
got 22 of interestate driving. I've had good luck with gas mileage on my V8 vehicles. The Vette set on 70 will run
31mpg.

Wow - never thought of a Vette as an economy car. But I guess it does have great aerodynamics!

Has anyone noticed any difference in MPG cuz of the hood scoop?

I often take 15 minutes or more to fill up with fuel. I love it, its my 15 minutes ! Of course my wife thinks I am a dork....

I, myself, would do the same thing, but whenever I fill my tank @ the 'rents' place I can't keep track of those things. Since it is a "bulk" tank. Industrial as well, it does not list the octane level of the gasoline nor does it tell you how much you are filling the tank with.

I usually only have to fill my tank once, maybe twice a week. Right now I'm at half a tank. I also have topped my first 150K miles on my '95.

As soon as the hubcap and I move to Hillsboro, closer to his employer, I plan on getting a new job so that I can save up for the first part of my matching set, a Matrix or a Rav-4. I'd love to buy a new 4Runner to start with, but I doubt I could afford it right away. I just require a 4x4 or AWD vehicle. I may go for a used 2000+ T4R tho. Dunno - what do you guys think?

LOL On my first trip in the vette, thought the gauge had
broke. Kept watching the range, it wasnt going down.
So finally stop to fill it up and clicked right off. Got back
in had over 400 mile cruising range. Thought dang
its screwed up, so kept driving till it got down.
Checked mileage old way (non computer) and it
was doing over 30. Even pushing the car some
will stay in the 20's. Great aerodynamic's, computer
engine management but I really think its a 350+
horsepower engine with little work to do !!!!! Mods
have are Corsa Indys Tigershark X pipe exhaust and Blackwing
air intake.

I think it's traditional on this board for any claims of V8 mileage above 16mpg to be treated with a high degree of scepticism and a series of detailed calculations - I believe somebody even tracked their miles with a GPS to make sure the calculation was accurate (I presume they measured the gas into the tank with a pipette also).

Just to add my obligatory note of disbelief, I reckon anyone getting more than 20 mpg (US Gallons) must live in a part of the country where the wind is always behind you and all of the hills have only down slopes (or people get out and push the truck up the hills).

so what can you expect from a v8 in pure city driving? I have seen alot of talk of city/highway, and pure highway but what do ya get in pure city?

Also A/C is a huge variable to alot of your mileage. Even in my Camry the second you click on the A/C watch the gas needle fly down. I'm an aggressive driver in the Camry but have been slowing down alot recently since the multiple speeding tickets have hit... I really want to know what to expect from a v8 in city only. Oh and thats driving conservatively.

On a recent trip from Dallas to Houston the computer logged 20.9MPG at 65MPH, no AC. With the AC turned on it dropped to ~19.8, at 75 it dropped to ~17 (with the AC on)

Not sure how accurate it is, but the apparent trend was there....

I just went up to Mammoth with the AC at about 75 mph. Roughly 14.5 up and down the mountain. I should think that is the low mark. I touched 15 mph before but that is the best I have done. Maybe it is the combination of the different tires and the AC being always on.

Anyways, getting good mileage was never very high on my list. I mean there aren't any SUV's as capable as the 4Runner that are getting great real world mileage. If you want good mileage than you should probably be looking at a different class of vehicle altogether.

I consistently get 10-12mpg in primarily city driving in my '04 4x4 V8. Throw in a mix of highway city driving and I might average 13-14 for a tank. For pure highway trips 14-17 is doable.

Just kidding... It was early in the day and the outside temp was only ~ 75... Was cool with the back window down and the side window down.

If I set my home AC at 72C i'd get ~ $600 electric bills

All I can say is ...

I drove my 03 SR5 with 2 passengers but packed for vacation 400 miles according to the map and 402 according to Mapquest and the mileage meter still had 18 more miles to go. (Yes I had a friend with me carrying a gas can just in case). The computer says 20.8. I did have my cruise set at about 73-74 and only stopped once for a pit stop. I only had to reset the cruise a couple of times in traffic.
