'06 4R Changing Auto Door Lock -- Problems

I want to change so that the doors lock automatically after driving, not when taking out of park. I've read the manual, read the forums, re read the manual but still can't get it to work (even after ensuring a 5 second hold time on the switch per the forum). I do get the "signal" that it has changed, i.e. the doors lock then unlock, but it still autolocks when pulling from park.

Any suggestions?

No real suggestions, sorry. Do know that you aren't the first. Many give up and the have the dealer do it. It seems that when they plug it in they can knock it out in minutes...

I thought you could disable the lock when shifting from park, and only locking when after 12mph. If I read your link notes correctly, it will lock when shifting from park, then if the doors are unlocked, it locks again when after 12 mph.

I wish I could set it only to lock after moving 12mph. I park in the garage too tight on one side for passengers to get in. Locks when I shift from park to back out, then have to unlock to let them in. Life is so hard...

When reading from the manual, read carefully as the wording is VERY similar for each of the options. I found myself reading what I "thought" it said rather than what it "actually" did say.

You can. a) Locking after shifting out of park and b) moving above 12mph are independent of each other. Same goes for c) unlocking when shifting into park or d) unlocking when the key is turned from 'On' to 'Acc' or 'Lock'.

You can enable or disable anyone of the four options individually. Where the shifter is set (park or out of park) and whether you're holding down the lock or unlock side of the master switch will determine which one of the four you're trying to enable or disable.

-a) Shift out Park locking, lock side of the master switch, shifter in park.
-b) Locking above 12mph, lock side of the master switch, shifter out of park.
-c) Shift into Park unlocking, unlock side of the master switch, shifter in park.
-d) Unlocking when key is turned from 'On' to 'Acc' or 'Lock', unlock side of master switch, shifter out of park.

When my 4Runner was delivered, it did not lock automatically and unlocked when shifted into park. Started the engine once after repeated attempts to program the automatic lock and its been locking when shifting out of park and above 12mph since. By default, it's suppose to lock when shifting out of park.

IIRC, some members reported, you need to have the timing exact, even half a second off throws off programming. Try using the flashing ":" on the clock to time it.

Awesome -- that did it. I wasn't cancelling the locking when shifting out of park. Now I have it set the way I want it: locking only after 12mph; unlocking when shifting to park.

Yes. You can enable or disable any one or all of the four choices in regards to locking and unlocking.

Repeat the procedure for locking when shifting out of park. That will disable it if it's currently enabled. If the locking or unlocking feature is enabled, repeating the step will disable it and vice versa if it's disabled.

thx for your help on all this and i must reinforce that the timing is key. the : flashing i don't think is perfectly in rhythm with seconds... or at least for me doing it thru my head worked better than using the blinking : on the digital console clock.

It was weird for my 2003 Limited... a and b are reversed in the instructions above?

i was going for option B with shifter NOT in park and it would still behave like option A. i was like wtf is going on so for kicks, i did option B but with shifter NOT in park and it worked.

i will say that i have remote start on my car and the vendor modified something where when i auto start, the driver side door unlocks automatically because without modification, ALL doors would lock when i remote started the car which makes access impractical.

I now have my car locking at 12mph and unlocking when put into park. perfect now!
