12 vs. 2 10's

If space is a concern, switch out for one 12 (or even one 8, if you're not looking to be heard a block away -- literally). two 10's will have more 'punch' because they're moving more air @ the same frequency as each other than a single 12" can. A 12 can produce lower frequency sound, but honestly, unless you're doing competitions, or listen specifically to special bass CD's, you probably won't notice a difference in the frequency response. Conversely, a 10 will be able to produce slightly higher frequencies, that you are really quite likely to be able notice more.

In practice though, 90% of the people in the world, can't tell the difference between frequency response between a good 10, and an equally good 12. You'll feel two 10's more than one 12, but any sub of sufficient quality is capable of literally shaking your car apart. Not to the point of breaking down, of course, but it can back some screw out. A friend of mine has an eclipse that's going on 10 years old and the dash vents under the window are very brittle. His subs have broken a few of those and made the fall out.

My opinion is, if space is worth more to you than a couple hundred, get the 12. If you'd rather save the couple hundred, keep the two 10's. Of course, that's assuming you already have an amp capable of driving them.

Also keep in mind that there's just not enough space in the cabin of a 4Runner to propagate a good bass wave. There will be a lot of roll-off at lower frequencies.

i can probably help you with this....i have a 2001 camaro ss with two 10's and one 500 watt amp powering them....it hits hard as shit...in my 2004 4runner i have two 12's and 2 1000 watt amps powering each sub so i have a total of 2000 watts and that hits hard as shit too. now the camaro has hell of alot less space then the 4runner so those 10's hit hard, people do say 10's hit harder then 12's but i dunno..it hard to tell...one 12 i honestly think will not be enough for you to like...then again i dunno what you like...i started out with one 12 in the 4runner and i thought it wasnt enough bass...you gotta remeber that there is alot of space back there...to help you..take a look at the pictures of my set up...http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3839595/1 this link is to the cardomain page i have up for the truck and there i have pictures of my set up...oh and by the way...stick with one brand...i have all alpine in both vehicles...i suggest you stick with all kenwood...hope this helps

It's more about power. If you throw 1,000 watts to anything it's going to be loud.

Throw 2,000 watts at a 12" BTL and I guarantee you it will be extremely loud.

2004TR4-SR5- You must have your gain turned down a lot. There is no way those type R's can take 1,000 watts each.

they actually take 1200 watts max...i actually have the gain past the half way point...not to sound like a ass here but i kno my stuff when it comes to car audio

You sound like a dumbass to me. Don't try to tell me I don't what what I'm talking about.

You never look at peak power in car audio. RMS is the standard and tells you how much continuos power they can handle.

really?...your gonna call me a dumbass on a fourm....my subs are both set up to be at 2 ohms...thats what those plugs that came with them are for...i figured you would know that since you have two of them...when my amps get 2 ohms they put out 1000 watts....now im "NOT EXACTLY" sure if there really getting a 1000 watts but its a hell of alot more then 550 watts like yours is putting out..yours puts out 550 watts at 4 ohms and 1100 watts at 2 ohms..since your sitting her fighting with me saying they cant even handle a 1000 watts..i take it that your only giving them 550 watts and running them at 4 ohms...see you need atleast 500 watts, which is the required RMS, for them to really hit hard...just because the RMS is 500 doesnt mean they cant handle more then that..see..theres a reason why they have a peak wattage..funny how i must know anything about car audio and still have a job at a car audio shop for 5 years now...isnt that strange? oh...and theres also alot of people out there have 1000 watt amps powering these subs...go read some reviews on them...if you read..you might learn something..just a thought. . .

WOW!!!!! WTF honestly i don't think anyone cares who's penis is bigger i believe the ? was regarding what we all preferred 10's or 12's not who knows car audio!!!!!!!!! thanks for the entertainment and poss breaking a few rules of the forum good going :flamewar:

its not even that...i dont care who has the bigger system...im just saying dont sit there and tell me im wrong and i dont know what im talking about when i do and i am right

I'm not even trying to argue with this guy. I'm trying to correct a mistake to help others who might read this thread.

If you constantly play any speaker at it's PEAK wattage it's going to blow. PEAK means how much it can handle for very short periods of time. Like less than a second. Why in the world would they have peak and RMS if you could send peak power to any speaker all the time?

I've been a member over on caraudio, the largest car audio forum, for over three years. I'm on there almost daily so I get my fair share of audio information.

Why not just get a 10w7 hit way harder than the 10s u have, also u only need to use one with the prowedge box if u buy it as a whole set from a reliable dealer. It dosent take alot of space like what u have now, my space is almost gone with the jl 212w3v2 in the h.o. box.

Ive always heard that about 10s...i have 2 10s in my camaro and 2 12s in my 4runner and i cant tell the difference too much...but i know that camaro hits just a little bit harder then the 4runner....they both make my head explode...hahaha

I have 2 JL 10W7's and have had 4 Alpine Type R's.

Same Fosgate BD1000 used to push both sets, at separate times.

Both of which were in my previous 97 at separate times.

The JL 10W7s were BY FAR WAY LOUDER,DEEPER,RESPONSIVE and SATISFYING In all ways.

Sealed box is the way to go, it uses cargo space so dont get me wrong but I guarantee you will be happy with the 10W7s. No doubt.

This comes from years of trying many different sizes, brands, sealed, ported...etc.

Good luck on your choice. It really is a big decision if you want to be satisfied in your sound and want to feel the music rather than just listen to it.

I accept with infprmation:
004 you are wrong about smaller subs producing tighter bass. An 18" could sounds the same or even better than a 10". It's all about how the sub is made. In general though, I would agree that smaller equals cleaner.

One of the biggest factors in the whole set up is the box. So just make sure that you get a good one.
