12 yrs and 200k miles later on timing belt

Ok I have gone over 12 yrs and 200k and on the same timing belt and water pump. I've gone thru 5 sets of tires and 1 transmission oil change, two batteries and one set of starter contacts, rear axle bearing and seals and that's it plus the routine 5k oil changes with mobile one high milage oil from wally. This thing is a beast and I am the kind of guy that if it ain't broke don't fix it, plus this engine is non interference so I really don't care. Any others who tested t h e water pump and belt as long as I have.

Just want to welcome another Boulder Colorado member! Welcome aboard. My friend who has a '97 bought it from a lady who ran the timing belt to 240k, changed her oil 25k miles previously, and the thing still ran like a champ. 4Runners will last as long as you treat them right

That's encouraging to hear.

I bought mine a little over a month ago with 200k...I'm owner number 4. Owner number 2 had it changed w/98k and it hasn't been changed since. I've been freaking out even though it's a non-interference engine. Probably ought to have it done but it's such a big expense and it sounds like you've had quite a good experience...

Forgot to mention it's a 2002 sport 4x4 thundercloud. It's now got 298000 miles of almost trouble free, just the bearings in axle caused a time out. Other than that it's been trouble free. Just a little weak up Eisenhower tunnel and that's it.

Not here but then again I don't like to invite Murphy to cause a breakdown on the side of the road between dallas and austin or wherever! That tunnel is a *****, been on it several times in both directions. Luck. :cowboy:

Did I read that right? One transmission oil change in 200,000 miles. If that is correct, that's not good. You should have renewed the fluid around 6 times in that amount of miles if you use conventional ATF and you should have replaced it around 4 times if you use synthetic ATF. But, the fact the transmission didn't implode from that kind of abuse is certainly amazing.

Yes one change and that was it. Used the valvoline full synthetic stuff but I really didn't need to change it as it was red and still clean. I've had not issues with my transmission at all. I probably will not change it ever again cause its not on my list ever again. To tell the truth I have never changed Trans oil in any of my cars. Lol

Just a guess but I figure my 3rd gen is in about the same situation.

It has 240k on it now, and I have records of oil changes, tires, and batteries from the PO but nothing beyond that. Last timing belt recorded was around 60k. If I go by that the timing belt is at 180k or so.

Now stuff may have been done I don't know about. I've only had it since January, and my records are a mixture of receipts found in the vehicle and Carfax/Toyota records. Something to go on but not necessarily complete. But by and large everything I mess with looks like I'm the first to touch it.

The weather is just now starting to be consistently pleasant enough to encourage me to work outside or in the garage. I've been hitting here and there at it, so I'll get to things when I have time. But hell, I'm driving it in the meantime, I didn't buy it for a project, I bought it to drive and drive it shall.

If I did everything to catch up it needs at once that would be a hefty chunk of change and a lot of work to do. I'm going to take it one thing at a time, unless it's stuff I can do while I'm in the area I might group jobs. I have a list long as my arm and growing of stuff I "should" do PM on, but honestly, it runs and drives fine right now.

Only thing I have a complaint is it shifts a tiny bit hard between 2-3 and there is a intermittent shake I can't pin down that is either bad shocks or the transmission stumbling, but it's so slight I can't put my finger on it.

Here is my thing it is a non interference engine so why even worry about the belt. If it is not broken don't fix it now if I had to do the water pump then yes I would do the belt.

Having break at a bad time/place can really suck.

Im with you man. I believe I'm on original at 280k. I know I have put 100k on it since Ive owned it. Non interference means no interference by me till it breaks.

Im at 206,000 on original water pump and 117,000 on the second timing belt. Not worried about either. I used Toyota red coolant and have changed my coolant about 4 times.

Say what you will about the maintenance intervals, but I find it hard to fault these guys with the mileage they have on their timing belts.

I just know with my luck I wouldn't get that far. Lol.

My 97 has written on the timing cover that the TB/WP was done at 108k miles and I have 209k miles on it. I had the cover off recently and the belt still looked brand new.

Guess what I won't be changing, possibly for the rest of the life of the vehicle?

The TB breaking is about the least likely thing I would expect to get me stuck in the middle of no where.

OP, change your tranny fluid even if you aren't having any issues though. One time in not enough. At the very least, do a drain and fill. Maybe another one in the future. Fluid is cheap, transmissions are not...

Plus it's stupid easy/cheap.
