'15 Trail With Nav - Head Unit

So I just realized the other day that my buttons and knobs had not back-light and was very hard to read at night with the headlights on. I confirmed with a couple of members on this forum that theirs lit up so I took my truck to the dealer...

The dealer (Fowler Toyota) calls me after a couple of hours to inform me that it was completely normal because "a backlight isn't an option available on my specific vehicle." They went on to explain that "the vehicles with blue lights inside do not have backlit volume knobs, etc on the head unit..."

Perplexed, I asked to see another trail on the lot because this didn't seem right and guess what...they didn't have any trails! After investigating furhter I found out they had a TRD Pro which I was pretty sure had the same headset. I had them fetch the keys and guess what? The keys and knobs are backlit. I took a picture and took it over to the service guy and he called the "mechanic" and gave him the updated info. He still argued that it wasn't an option. I eventually had another dealer (one I bought mine from) with one in stock send me a picture of it backlit.

They still didn't seem convinced and told me that they would have to submit something to Toyota to verify and then wait for their response on how they wanted the service department to proceed. Does that sound right or are they just trying to jerk me around?

They're either idiots or just trying not to have to cover it. Either way, as long as it doesn't cost you money, just be patient until you get their final answer. If they still give you issues, them inform them they lost your business and then take it to the dealer you purchased it and ask them to repair it.

BTW, is there a '14+ trail out there without navi?

Call toyota customer care and report the issue and have it escalated. The dealership will receive negative feedback and improve their service, guaranteed.

I don't know if they all have Nav or not. The dealership sold it to me saying it was an "upgraded feature" but who knows.

I'm a little concerned that they are going to try to tell me that I broke it when I added my Kicker Hideaway subwoofer (although I honestly can't remember if it was working prior to that or not. I didn't cut any factor wires, instead I bought two wire harnesses and spliced everything together so I could leave factory harnesses intact. I did go back and plug in the factory harness and made sure all cables were secure in the back and they still didn't work.

That was the first thing I checked. All other interior lights work fine...Not even the marker ligths on either side of the cd tray illuminate! Hard to believe they tried to tell me that the head unit buttons don't light up. Lol what did they just put non functional marrker lights there for show?

I was just curious because I haven't seen one without it. While yes, NAV and apps are an "upgrade" over the standard entune head unit that toyota offers, they may not offer the base units on specific models like the trail or the highest trim levels of any of their vehicles.

Come to think of it, I did look at a couple of trails and they all had NAV...Maybe someone else with more knowledge than myself knows for sure though...

Looks like Navigation was an option for the Trail...this is from the Toyota website:

You got me curious so I went out and looked at mine, and my buttons and knobs are backlit.

Check the 7.5 amp fuse under the drivers kick panel. I think the fuse was labeled panel or dash. Either way mine was blown and my backlighting for the radio, ac and overhead console was out.

I'll look into that tomorrow...You think it could be blown but all of the other dash/control lights are functioning?

Well... the first thing will happen; the second thing most likely won't.

As for it not being back-lit as a standard feature... that is the first time I have ever heard that. All our head units have some form of back lighting, it is possible it shorted out, blew a fuse, or the head unit is faulty. Either way it sounds like they (hopefully) made a TAS case, which means if it isn't a fuse or wiring to the head unit TAS will most likely throw a head unit at it. Seems like that's how it usually ends these days with radio issues.

******UPDATE******

So I called Toyota to gripe yesterday. Today the service technician called me back asking for me to send him a picture of the head unit so they could look at the numbers on it to confirm for sure with Toyota what my radio is capable of!?!?!?! Seriously??? They called me back shortly thereafter, requesting I bring my car in very early in the morning to do diagnostics that Toyota recommended before ordering a new radio. I explained to them that I work until 2am and that early mornings didn't work well for me. The guy acted put out and then while still sounding put out tells me he was "trying to work with me and help me out" "but do whatever I need to"...

WTF?

Stay away from Fowler, bunch of idiots in my book. I walked on the lot loan already secured, and these guys somehow managed not to sell me a 4Runner. Even though I live way out in Claremore, I go to Jim Norton for everything. Their service is good. While I've had a couple nagging hard to solve issues result in an extra trip, there was always a loaner when I need one. I've had the master technicians ride with me in my truck so they know the exact issue I'm talking about. I get the impression that's like trying to part the Red Sea to Fowler folks.

Dash lights and NAV option

wpen too

The radio back lights should work. It may be the fuse as someone said here. It may be a loose connection. One could only hope it's as simple as that.

Too bad the dealer can't verify the lights and find a repair method in his service manual. That's really dumb on their part.

The NAV is listed as an option for the 2015 Trail Edition in the printed catalog. If you go to the Toyota website and try to build a T4R TE you can't uncheck the option for Entune Audio with NAV. I didn't see any in my searches that did not have it already installed.

I ordered my Trail Edition two weeks ago because I knew I didn't want any of the Toyota options except KDSS. I'm old school - I use maps. I don't use NAV much and believe it will be outdated in a couple of years by better systems. Garmin already makes a better NAV system for the car and charges less than the option costs.

I also knew I didn't want a Premium sunroof, leatherette upholstery, sliding cargo tray, cargo cover, door guards, wheel locks and all the other over-priced options they add to drive the price up. If you want those options, then it's not such a bad deal. I just don't want any of them.

Funny you should mention that! When we bought my wife's Rav4, we also walked in with money in hand ready to buy and they REFUSED to budge on price AT ALL!!! They were kind of pompous A*holes on top of not wanting to deal with us.

We told them we were going to walk if they kept it up and they basically said "Fine. Go." We immediately went to Jim Norton and bought our vehicle that same day from them. It was a pleasure to deal with them.

I got my 4Runner at Hudiburg Toyota in Midwest City because they had what I wanted in stock. They were also a pleasure to deal with!

It really sucks that they are so bad because they are SOOOOO close to my house....
