$18,000 for a 98 4Runner. HAH

Saw this on craigslist thought I should share. He wants $18,000 for a 1998 4Runner with 380,000 miles because it has this diesal engine? Dont get me wrong I dont know anything about this engine but part of me feels like this truck is worth closer to $4,000 so hes saying the engine is worth $14,000. What a joke!

Like anything that is for sale, it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay.

I think anyone that would pay his asking price is nuts. But there are people with more money than brains, so somebody just might jump on this.

Nah, that looks like Gumbalf is back at it. He is on this forum and sells stuff like that for really high prices. He claims he manages to make the sales he posts despite their high prices. He listed another runner a few years back for about $18k and we all made fun of him. He claims he makes bank on them though, so not much to argue with there.
 
I was gonna say flag it as spam for the lolz but then I read the ad and saw it already says "stop flagging my ad." Now I have epic lolz because others beat me to it.
 
It is definitely not faster than 3.4 5VZFE. I have driven 3.0 turbo diesels (2L and 1KZ) and it is not even closer to 5vzfe.
 
Coming from the Land Cruiser world, I can see where he's coming from. Someone probably would pay that price for a mint 80's HJ61 with a 12HT diesel. They're hard to import, and it costs a fortune to source all the parts to perform your own swap since most everything has to be shipped from Japan or Australia.

The same truck with a 4BT Cummins or 4BD Isuzu diesel swap would probably sell for half the price despite getting better MPG and having more power, simply because some people are Toyota purists and don't care if it takes a month to get a spare part. Lol.

I still think the price is a little crazy, but I wouldn't be shocked if there's some nerd with deep pockets willing to pay it.
 
The thing is that any of us could have someone swap in that motor into our rigs for $10-12,000, so basically he's trying to get $6,500-$8,500 for a 4Runner with 380k miles on it.

Hey, what's he supposed to say,"slow for a truck, slightly weaker than the gasoline version"? Unsubstantiated subjective claims are the only way the advertising business exists.

Search for Gumbalf's posts in the old thread, it was a fairly interesting read. If the ads are copied there, you'll see this looks like it is him.

Yeah I remember Gumbals posts about a year or so ago. He was in Cali, and asking like 18500 or something like that for a 3rd gen.
 
i love how this is a legit swap but price is beyond unreasonable. i can see 7-8 in the vehicle because of the swap and California legalization of the engine since cali smog laws are nuts now and in order to be legit there would need to be a ton of paperwork. otherwise its a nice truck.

Like most in that thread stated. Pics or it didn't happen. Good for him if it did but in the age of the webernetz, I highly doubt anyone is naive enough to pay that much money for a 15 year old car. A 3 minute google would have saved them almost $10k. Literally.

What that title sounds like a winner to me lol and in other words half truths make sales
