1987 4 Runner Question

Hello all, I recently purchased a 1987 4 runner with a 89 22r engine, it was converted from carb to FI, and has a automatic trans, The person I purchased from said he had it looked at by 2 mechanics and they told him it needed a transmission replacement. I will explain what it does and someone please chime in and let me know what you think, I personally beleive its the throttle position sensor. when the truck is cold and you start it it, you have to pump gas to get it to start, it then runs,idles just fine, you can put it in gear and drive around the block, it goes thru all gears but sorta dies off in high gear, the trans will kick down when throttle is floored, and pick up speed, the trans does not slip at all, but once the truck warms up, the throttle doesnt seem to respond at all, unless you feather it very lightly, and I mean super light, even in park or neutral once warmed up, the throttle is very sluggish and slow to respond, I have did the ohms check on the tps, and its sorta crazy, it can be dead on at one point ,then under or over the parameters, the next time you check, and the one im doing is with no feeler gage installed, just the 0.0mm gap. I was told that this truck ran great before this problem started with its previous owner. Before I throw a transmission ,or a throttle position sensor at this 4 runner, I wanted to see if anyone else has had experience with a problem like this, it just seems to me that if it was the transmission, it would slip instead of kill the throttle, but then again, I have never dealt with a toyota automatic transmission either. any help is super appreciated,

If your transmission was slipping then you wouldn't have any issues with your motor. Your issue doesn't seem to be transmission related. It may be your TPS, but it seems odd that it would only do this when warmed up. Make sure that you're testing the right terminals on the TPS and you're not getting them upside down.

Download the FSM in the sticky on the top of this section and be sure you're testing the TPS correctly before you make a $100 mistake by replacing the TPS.

If your TPS is testing bad, replace it. It may not be causing the exact problem you're having, but you can bet it's up to no good.

Wasn't '85 the first year of EFI?

I would replace the TPS and clean the hell out of the throttle body.

Doesn't sound transmission related to me either.

The motor in his is an 89 22r. Some trucks still used carbs until 89 I think. Why the p/o would swap to a carb, who knows.

The TPS shouldn't cause any problems when it's started cold. From my understanding, the engine will ignore all sensors and run on defaults for a short amount of time when cold.

It sounds like it could be a fuel pressure issue to me.

Also, how's the air filter?

after having the engine replaced in my '88 22re w 5-speed w approx. 225k miles... i thought all was well.

about 3 months later i had the oil changed and as i was leaving the garage everything seemed great until i tried to accelerate.

no joy.

the engine sounded good but no go.

i brought it back the next day and they replaced the TPS and all was good again.

that's all i know about the TPS... bad TPS = no go fast

the air filter is new, its crazy because it will sit and idle all day no problems, runs smooth, just the throttle issue, you can floor it and it wont make enough power to climb a hill at all,lol , im gonna recheck the ohms again this morning,if its still all over the place,im gonna change it.(TPS)
