1996 3" Lift and Options/Wheel size and backspacing

ok, yes, I have read through the suspension posts, and many others, but im finding mixed reviews and posts. Quick and easy question here. If I go with the Toytec 3" lift, will I be able to fit a 33" tire or will I need to do a BL as well? Also, what do any of you recommend for wheels? Id like to get away from the 16" and go with a 15", but im not sure what my options are. And with the 3" lift and possibly running 33's, what backspacing do I need to look for? Sorry for the newb questions, and I apologize if this is already answered. I did search but didnt find specifics for what im asking. If its posted, please point me in the right direction and I will go there. Thanks again in advance!

Post #4 will sum up the fitting of 33s.
As far as wheels, you will need something around 4" backspacing. Factory wheels are ~4.65" and usually have upper control arm rubbing issues.

Yes a 3" lift will fit 33's. But they will rub on the front bumper and on the pinch weld, its easy to remedy rubbing in those spots though.

No, you cannot fit 15's if you have 16's stock.

Stock backspace is 4-5/8". with 33's and 3", you will want between 4-1/2" and 4"

Your comment about not being able to run 15's if I have stock 16's? Im sorry, but not quite sure what you mean. And just so im picturing this correctly in my mind, the less the BS, the more the wheel will stick out past the fender well, correct? One last question, what is the pinch weld? A rep from toytec mentioned having to do something with his pinch weld on his 4runner. Once again guys, I apologize for the newb questions, just want to make sure I do it right the first time.

Whats not to get? 16s are the smallest wheel you can fit. Its becuase of the brake calipers up front.

Yes less backspacing= wider stance.

Sorry, thats what I didnt get. I didnt know that since mine had the 16's, that it had larger calipers and that that is all I can run. Im on here to ask questions and learn. If I dont know as much as you guys, I apologize, thats why im here. Thanks for the input, now I know.

Im not wanting to go that big really, just want to run a 33 size comparable tire in a 16, since I cant run 15" wheels.I would like to be able to take out to Kelly Flats, but not sure how extreme it is out there. We just moved up here a couple months ago. Still exploring.

There are 3- "33s" in a 16" wheel size.
255/85-16 =~33.07" and 10.04" wide
286/75-16 =~32.83" and 11.22" wide
305/70-16 = ~32.81" and 12.01" wide

The wider the tire, the more rubbing. My friend that has 305s had to cut his fenders too.

Just thought I would add some quick input since I just barely went trough the same process. I didn't go Toytec but info should be the same.

I just recently put a set of Land Cruiser coils on my rear with top plate spacers on the front, ended up with 4" lift in rear and 3.5 in front. I put a set of 50% 285/75r16 tires on wheels with similar back spacing to the stock wheels. The tires rub the upper control arm enough that I couldn't bolt them on. After 2" wheel spacers now they barely rub the inner fender (back side) at full turn in reverse on the driver side only. They have never rubbed the front bumper. I've ran a couple trails in Moab with it and still the only rub on the front end is in reverse at full turn. It probably wouldn't rub at all with 1" spacers rather than the 2" one I have.

Yeah, Kelly Flats is only about 45 minutes from me. When we first moved up here from Texas, I had my Wrangler. So we went out old Flower Road through the park and ended up over at Pingree I think. We left there and headed back towards Poudre, and thats when I saw Kelly Flats. Been hearing alot of stories about it too. So im really wanting to go there soon!! Im just wondering if I should stick with a 32 size tire. I do plan on putting about a 1" body lift on it though pretty soon. I dont know. I guess just gonna be a trial and error thing. Main thing I need to do is find the right wheels with the correct backspacing. I wonder if Discount will have anything?

From my experience, 4.5" BS on wheels are ideal for a 3" lift and 33" tires...I had no rubbing on the UCA or fenders and pinch weld. Any other backspacing and you will likely be trimming something.

My 97 has the ToyTec Ultimate 3", 255/85R16 tires with stock rims and 1.5" spacers. The only rub I had was on the front bumper plastic, which I trimmed. No rubbing now.

Because the 255s are narrower, the UCAs were never an issue.
