20 inch wheels on LIMITED

I recently traded in my 2003 Limited V8 4WD, that had Michelin LTX M/S2s on it, for a used 2011 Limited with Yokohama Geolandars.

In doing my research on the 5th generation, tire options for the Limited's 20 x 7 rims was a concern. Specifically, very few tire options in that P245/60R20 size.

I'm going to stick to this tire size recommendation, and have narrowed down my search to the Michelin Premier LTX and the Cooper Discoverer SRX.

My choice will likely be the Michelins, having had them on my 03, and knowing how well they can perform year round.

Will be running the Geolandars through the summer, then get the Michelins in the fall.

Today my 4Runner said good-bye to the original Yokohama Geolandar G96 tires and hello to a set of Michelin Premier LTX tires in 245/60R20 (stock) size. These will be run year-round, so will give updates with winter (low temperatures, snow, ice) performance.

Well for option 2, you also need to factor in the sale of your 20" wheels. I also have a 2014 LE and I sold my set of 20" wheels and tires on Craigslist for $1,000 when they had about 7,000 miles on them. Now, yours are older but you can still get some nice $$$ for those big wheels. I ended up buying the 4th gen LE wheels that are 18" and wider.

First time post here, long time member of Tacoma World. Wanted to thank everyone for the vital information here regarding this topic. We had our 2014 4 runner since new, and its primarily my wife's vehicle. We essentially live in the northeast where we see some brutal winters, making it worse is on top of a mountain. I essentially bought this vehicle for one reason, and to get us safely up and down the mountain in the winter. I've had 4 Tacoma's and know the capabilities of these machines, but essentially my wife said her Rav 4 was better in the snow than this 4 runner. I attributed this to the stock Geolanders which are essentially a summer tire. After going to a few tire places was confronted with the same issue everyone else was, there's nothing aggressive in the stock size. After taking into consideration the safety issues of the 275 on a 7 inch rim we were left with these decisions. 1, trade in for a SR5. 2, buy new wheels, added cost of $900, on top of the price of tires. 3, roll the dice on the 275 on narrow rim. We felt the right decision for us was to install the 275s on the narrow rim. We went with the Destination AT's ( 275-55-20) She only goes three miles to work every day and I feel the risk of tire separation at her low speeds would be a rare occurrence, but she does needs to get there in the winter/snow. We certainly understand the risk and thank this site for pointing it out, but the risk of leaving those stock tires on for yet another winter was more of a safety issue for us.

I've got a 2011 LTD, with 20x9 KMC Chrome Wheels, and 275/55 GY Eagle LS2's, for 52k miles now and not one issue. Do you still have the original 20" LTD wheels? I believe they are 20x7?

Update:
Currently three years after installation of the 20x9 Black Rhino wheels and 275/55 Toyo Open Country tires, I'm still happy with this change. I sold my stock wheels for $550, as I do not see a reason to go back. There's been no concerns with fit at all, using the stock suspension on the Limited.
With the traffic that I encounter in the Northwest, I've had to take evasive action a number of times in both dry and wet conditions. In all cases, I have been very impressed with the handling. So the change of tires and wheels has not adversely changed the handling, performance, or fit.
In tracking the fuel mileage, I thought that I may take a hit with the larger footprint. But around town and on backroads I'm getting 17.6+ mpg, and 22+ mpg on the highway.
I consulted a number of knowledgeable people in the tire and wheel industry before making this decision.
Whatever, you decide, enjoy your 4Runners. They are good choices for independent adventurers.

Thanks to all those who shared their internal LE wheel struggle. After reading and re-reading. I opted for 275/60r20 Terra Grapplers on the original wheels. To make sure they fit I installed a 2.5"/1.5" leveling kit from Daystar and pushed the fenders forward before having the tires mounted.

Also, the Discount Tire here in Austin flat refused to mount them.

First pic below. Headed out for opening weekend of deer season here in TX so action pics to follow.

So far, the best price I got was from a Goodyear at $1,359 out the door including balancing and alignment. Canadian tire was quoting $1,550. The tires are cheaper at cad tire at $250 each.. labour was more expensive though!

Very happy with them so far, went driving around today to see how they are. Forgot how AT tires drive.. last time I drove on AT tires was 10 years ago on my first truck. Specific to the issue of 275/55 AT tires on the stock 20" rims, would it be worthwhile to make an effort to get Toyota and any brand to approve a specific tire for the "non-standard" width. Not sure if that's possible or how much effort it would take, but if this issue affects the LE (and SR5 too, with 7" stock wheel?) it's not a non-issue.

Additionally, some vehicle manufacturers and tire companies have permitted rim widths that are not within the tire's original approved rim width range. For example: BMW has combined 235/40R17 sized tires on 17x7.5" rims (which are 0.5" less than the narrowest 8.0" wide rim listed for the size) on certain M3 models; and Chevrolet has combined P255/50R16 sized tires on optional 16x9.5" rims (which are 0.5" wider than the 9.0" wide rim now listed for the size) on certain Corvette models. While these applications have received the approval of the vehicle and tire manufacturers, staying within the approved rim width range helps assure that the tire's internal stresses are within its design parameters.

I actually brought it to the service advisors attention to get his opinion on it, him and the tech checked out the rims, said they did not see any problems with it. Even Canadian Tire was willing to install it for me.. did not check Costco though.

Reason I ask is because I am thinking about installing spidertrax spacers but worry about the amount of trimming I need to do to make sure they clear the fender liner.. Tires are rubbing as it is and I know adding spacers will only make it worse! Anyone running 275s on OEM rims with Spidertrax?

I have 275/60/20 on OEM Limited wheels. I have the Daystar 3/1.5" lift and level kit installed. I had 1.25" Trail Gear spacers on. I moved my inner fender liners forward aout 1" and removed the OEM mud flaps. The wheels would rub at full lock only when reversing, and every once in a while when I hit a bump with the wheels turned.

I was cosidering a body mount chop, but tried removing the spacers first. Once I removed the spacers, I had no more rubbing at all.

So I just read through this entire thread, and I only saw one other member with 285/50-20 cooper discoverer ht plus tires.

I just bought a set from discount tire online, as they were listed to fit the '12 4runner LE.

I am planning on getting them mounted tomorrow, but now I'm worried that they might rub. If it just rubs the plastic well guards, I can move them, but I really hope not, and I am also a bit concerned about them being too wide for the stock wheel. I'm not doing to anything crazy / off road with the 4runner, I just pretty much run around town in it.

Has anyone else here run 285's on stock 20' LE wheels?
