2000 4Runner Swapping 3.4L for a 4.0L

so scotts97T4Rltd pretty much changed my mind about the swap. He showed me that the 5vz is actually a much better motor than the 1gr so i thought id let you know in case you wanted to unsticky my thread. im gonna sell the motor a just bought and buy a turbo instead."

So, no 4.0 V6 in a 3rd gen. yet. I will go and unsticky this thread.

well its not that the turbo will be easier. my logic was that a supercharged 5vz produces about 240-250 hp while the NA 1gr produces 240 hp. So I figured i would put the 1gr in my 3rd gen then supercharge it. Well after doing more research and having a heated debate with someone on here, i found out that the 5vz is a much much much better engine than the 1gr and can handle a lot more boost. So i had already bought the 1gr from japan by this time, as a matter of fact its sitting in my garage right now, and began making preparations for the swap then got into a debate with someone and did some research and decided a turbo is a much better idea. and actually the turbo is gonna be much more difficult because no one makes a turbo kit for a 4runner.

im pretty sure STS makes a turbo kit for the 4runner. i know they have one for the tacoma, so it should work with the 4runner also with just a little modification. you are lookin at about $7k for the kit. why spend $7k on a vehicle that is hardly worth that. it just doesnt make sense to have all that cash invested in your runner. if you are hellbent on a turbo, you are prpbably better off buying a different vehicle. i dont know if your 4runner is an auto, but if it is, you are looking at additional $ in building the tranny to handle the power. if you want more power for your runner, just strap on a used supercharger. they can be had dirt cheap these days. im just trying to be sensible here.
btw, check out yotatech, and other tacoma forums. with the proper mods, you can be well over 300hp at the wheels with the supercharger.

I used to race amateur with cars, turbo and non-turbo and when I got my 4Runner back in '99, never had the urge to fix her engine up. I know that when I used to do engine swaps, Rotaries or Honda Engines, I have to complete either re-map the cpu or get an engine management system to run the engine. Is this true with your conversion as well? Just curious because I've never attempted an engine swap with ANY truck.

By the way, good luck with the project bro. I hope it turns out well... I might follow.

4runners are my favorite cars in the world and i dont ever plan on selling this thing and i want something unique and different. i know it sounds crazy but i guess i just feel like doing something stupid
