2003 4runner rear gate latch

Hello, any one have a problem with the latch not latching ? I can hear the latch trying to latch , but it won't !!! help , I have two ratchet straps holding my gate shut. I'm not sure if it's the control box or not, but it cost like $200.00 , I just want to be sure before I spend the cash. thanks :bigok:

I recently bought a used '03--when I initially looked at it, the rear hatch wouldn't open. I bought it on the dealers assurance that they would fix it. The mechanic had to replace the latch--it was frozen for some reason. Cost was about $300 total (to the dealer).
Have you disconnected your battery lately?

I have not disconnected the battery, do you think that might help? I can hear the mechanism working but it just wont catch for some reason.

Have you tried lubricating the latch....

I habe lubricated it ,I disconnected the battery, for about a minute or less, and it still will not catch, it tries to catch but just will not grab on,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I dropped it off at the dealership yesterday, $380.00 plus tax to replace the latch.

Just wondering if this is a failure-prone item, since my used '03 needed to have it fixed before I bought it, and I have read a few posts about problems...$300+ to be able to use the back hatch is harsh.

Since this latch is electronic I would bet that slamming it would be really bad for it. I have had to stop others from slamming mine . It sort of seems thats what people are used to.

back door latch ?

I need to know if other guy's have a same problem's : i have a 2004 runner, and when i close the back door ( 5th ) the electric system of the door close and open ... it's impossible to close it ! The electric system don't stop ( close and open ). Is it the "latch" broken ??? or electric system ???

when you close your hatch does it sound like the latch catches then lets go ? that is what mine does and I took it to the stealership and for $79.00 they told me that the latch was bad and it would cost $380.00 plus tax to replace. The latch cost $225.00.

Yes ... i listen the sound of the electric "mecanic". The door close ( catch ) and in the same times, is opener. After that, no sound ( and no catch to ! ). Is the latch problem's ?

Latch problem's

I defused(unsettled) the system to verify the state of details(rooms). The problem is not mechanical, it is electronique. I am going to visit my dealer tomorrow to reschedule(reprogram) the system. I to restore you news(short stories) later...

so if i avoid slamming it, it will prolong the life of that electronic door closer? dats what i do with mine.. heck i even have a notice posted on the door to GENTLY close the rear hatch! Cuz im thinking that if i slam the thing, it might ruin the door closer someday..
