I'll have to take my camera with me next time. I didn't get out and look at them up close so I couldn't tell you whether they were covers or the actual handles but every SR5 they had, had them, so I assume it is standard on the SR5 model.

I know why the center frame on the 2006 model was made stronger. It had nothing to do with rigidity problems. It was done in order to make the roof stronger for future new roll over standards that may take place in the near future. Although I do not understand how this makes the roof stronger. The windshield was made thicker to help with the new future roll over standards as well. This information came to me from the district toyota manager in the northeast.

In order to make the roof stronger for future new roll over standards, I would assume Toyota would strengthen the roof structure and the pillars not the windshield.

I did take a pretty close look at the door handles because I was the first member to order those chrome covers..........the 2006 doesn't seem to be a cover.......at least I didn't see a seam and the chrome was on the back part of the handle unlike mine. Hope this helps. I've got to go back and read this thread more closely since I have been sorta MIA on the forum lately. Sorry I didn't snap any photos of the new details.

I just bought a 2006 V-6 Sport in the mid-atlantic region. The base price for those interested was $32,250 before options and freight. I'm not sure what they did with the hitch and why on the V-6. It is described on the window sticker as a "weight carrying tow hitch and ball mount(V-6 Models Only)" with a $430 option price. Does this mean it is a Class 4 "weight distributing hitch". Last night I was parked beside my friend's 2005 Limited V-8 model and the hitch difference is obvious. His is visible below the bumper and mine is not. The channel that the hitch slides into comes out through the bumber rather than below it. I crawled up under it and it is bolted directly into the rear frame crossmember not bolted onto the underside of the frame. Not an expert on hitches. Someone else may be able to explain all this but it is a definite change in design, at least on the V-6.

Saw a 2006 V8 Limited on the lot today. It had the same kind of hitch that my friend's 2005 had. It is visible beneath the bumper. Owner's manual says weight carrying hitch not the same as weight distributing hitch. Seems to me that before, all 4-Runners had the same hitch. Now there seems to be a different design depending on V6 or V8. If what I have is only a Class 3 hitch, I think I could have had it done myself for less than $430.

This part is just my assumption, but I think the only difference for '06 is that the V6 model's hitch is now optional.

Early 2003 V8's had the weight-carrying hitch. It was replaced with the weight-distributing hitch later in the 2003 model year. All 2004-2006's V8's have the weight-distributing hitch.
V6 models have only been offered with the weight-carrying hitch.
As far as I know, the '06 hitches are the same. The only difference is that the V6 hitch is now optional instead of standard.
