2006 Factory Nav Confirmation

I'm seriously considering the 2006 4runner, and definitely want the built in Nav system. My 96 Explorer XLT has a 6-CD changer - I thought it was an extravagance at the time, but used it almost every day for the last 10 years.

I was rather unhappy when the 4R literature seemed to say there was no CD changer, and the local dealer checked with Toyota and confirmed it was a single CD. Bummer.

Then I found this wonderful site and lo and behold - pictures of the 06 Nav with a 4 disc CD changer! Gorgeous pictures, taken in loving detail. After a careful search of the toyota web site gave no new info, I called the 800 number to make sure this was available.

Toyota response was that no - it only holds one disc. He put me on hold to "check". I believe checking consisted of him reading the website, even after I assured him I was literate and web savvy and could read the web site myself. When I mentioned I was looking at pictures with a changer, he claimed the system was aftermarket.

I went to the dealer again today and tried to check it out. The dealer has a number of 4R Limiteds, but no Nav systems in stock to look at. This time a different person "confirmed" that the system holds only one CD at a time. He showed me a nav system in a different truck as confirmation, but this turned out to be an 05.

Has anyone else seen an 06 Nav system, and can confirm that they saw either a 4CD changer or one that only held one CD? Is it possible the pictures are a brand new system and if I ordered a standard in stock Toyota 4Runner it might come in without a changer in the Nav system?

Also, are there any manuals or specs for the 06 Nav system available online? The Toyota website is pretty anemic.

All I can say is that it is sad Toyota doesn't even know what is in their vehicles!! The 2006 Toyota factory installed NAV system has a built-in 4-disc changer. To quote the "2006 Navigation System Owner's Manual" from page 156:

"This CD changer can store up to four discs."

And Toyota only offers the one NAV model for 2006. The NAV units prior to model year 2006 were single disc. I also believe Toyota's external changer will even work with the NAV, but I cannot confirm this. It might be hard to find NAV on dealer lots or in the pipeline to dealers because it seems it is not an option that is readily available in most areas.

Thanks. Those were the pictures I was referring to - the ones the guy from the Toyota Help desk told me had to come from "an aftermarket unit", and the local Toyota dealer never heard of.

That is why I am wondering if this particular Toyota may have a new unit on it, not yet widely available and thus unannounced. If so, I could wind up ordering a Toyota and it will only have a single disc unit (which I would be stuck with, as this is what the dealer said I would be getting).

Does anyone else have or seen this unit that could confirm one way or the other? Are there any part numbers for these units? Manuals or setup sheets? The Toyota website is pathetic in terms of useful information.

Toyota is Customer Care is CLUELESS!

I found it hard to believe that Toyota wouldn't know the details about thier own vehicles. The dealerships are staffed by little more than trained monkeys so them I could understand not knowing; but Toyota Customer Care themselves?

Well, I called Toyota Customer Care and asked if the T4R Nav unit was able to take 4 disks. Now, to be fair, the lady stated they didn't have any technical information available. She then checked and said that the Nav unit only takes one disk and it isn't available with the JBL 6 disk CD changer system. I told her that of course it wasn't available with the JBL 6 disk system... they occupy the same spot in the dash! :bash:

I then read the info from the manual to her.

Toyota really needs to have better trained people who have access to at least BASIC information about their vehicles. And by Basic, I mean more than the damn sales brochure!

I'd rather not go into details about how bad this call was handled but if any of my calls to Toyota had gone this badly when I was decided whether or not to buy a 4Runner I WOULD HAVE NEVER PURCHASED ONE!!!

I have the 2006 Limited with Navigation. And as everyone has been saying...yes, I have the 4-disc in dash cd player.
