This system can be found on GX470 with Sport Pkg or the new Land Cruiser. LX570 does NOT have it.

It would be a solid step back towards the Runner's off road roots and swapping over the drivetrain (with a 5 speed too) from the locked FJs would be a solid upgrade for the 4Runner and perform fine for the most of us.
I still don't see the locker in the 4Runners since I'm not sure Toyota is sure about the 5th gens depending on gas prices since the FJ has filled the off road niche in Toyota's SUV lineup.

The LC 70 would be nice but that isn't available in the US so it's hard for us to *drool* over something we can't buy.

Hehe, well, the V8 is not available in Iceland neither, nor the 4runner. But I keep droolin' over 'em even tho'.


It could be interesting to import one of those beasts, or just build my own V8 CRTDI

Anyhow, back on topic, there's no huge change (i.e. new generation) save the extra package for the '09 model of the 'Runner?
It's also interesting that they are offering rear locker again in the runner. Perhaps they are gonna be suitable for offroadin' again.

Highly doubtful, all of their trucks and suv's have been becoming lower for many reasons including how prone the vehicle is for a rollover, and also for others safety (you don't want to make a very high vehicle that would contact at a high point on another car in a crash).

I really don't see them making changes like that mid-generation, it would greatly alter the dynamics of the vehicle. If they did though, I know I would not be complaining :bigok:

1" is not the difference between a good and bad off roader

A little lift is a small ,easy,cheap mod to get all the plus's of the 4th gen.

I have owned EVERY Gen 4runner , This one smokes them all.

This 4runner is a FJ Cruiser, Toyota's Off roader

Hmmm. . . sounds like Toyota is making the 4Runner more distinguishable from the crossover trend and urbanized mid sizes of other manufacturers, going back to the roots. Maybe this is an experimental edition that will be used as a basis for determining the future of the 4Runner?

Totally different systems. XREAS has to do with special cross-linking shocks in an "X" fashion (driver front to rear passenger shock and so on). KDSS has to do with special electronically-controlled anti-roll (sway) bars...off-road (under certain mph), the sways relaxes allowing for more wheel articulation.

XREAS is mainly an ON-ROAD system. KDSS is mainly an OFF-ROAD system.

I am in the same boat with you!! I have now been told a mid to late August for the 09s to start popping up....I dont know if that is accurate or not.

I got no problems with a good set of upsized AT tires with off roading. This vehicle has went more places and through more crap than any other of the 15 4x4's I've had locker rear or not.

Although the lockers are nice and would love a front / rear one's . The Atrac kicks butt for what it is . Amazing system to have 4 wheel traction off road.

Do you know if the wheels are the same as the 16 inchers available on the FJ, or will they be unique to the 4Runner? I can't manage to get this information.

It's about the right time frame depending on which part of the country you're in. Some members who have bought next year's model did so in August. Might see them a week or two sooner on the West Coast.

I did quite a few different Google searches and they all produced the same results....basically just restating what the C&D article said. It sounds believable but I'll believe it when I see it. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a V6 only option. And like you said Falls, a good set of AT tires is all you really need on any of the 4runner models in order to make them more than enough off-road capable. BTW, I LOVE the V8 on my 4R and if what techno quoted about it the trail edition only being available in the V6 powertrain....well I'll stick with my V8.

I was at a dealer here in Maryland last Saturday, salesrep seemed to be a good sort but the dealership has a negative history.The sales manager there said at the last meeting they had he was told the 09's were being "refreshed", no styling change to speak of.I told them how we would like to see that new color Pacific Blue on the 09, along with a few common sense lighted control switches for the interior.Toyota has two V6 SUV's now that have a tow rating of 5000lbs, one of them is pretty well behind the other in the feature for dollar department.I like the 4R SE above all the others for our uses anyway. This next month will be interesting for sure.

Pacific Blue was offered in 2003-05. It was dropped along with Stratosphere Mica for Nautical Blue in 2006. Pacific Blue was lighter shade of blue, where as Stratosphere Mica was a darker blue.
