2009 Info / new Trail Edition T4R

I thought I saw Pacific Blue on the new Camry-Highlanders, if not, what ever blue it is, wife and I sure like it! Color won't be a deal breaker with me, short-cuts and un-restrained beancounters failing to keep a great vehicle on top WILL cause me to look elsewhere. One thing about the 4R bunch just like over at Tundra Solutions, they're informed, not afraid to criticise their rides and patient with the "newbies"......thanks.

I too am thinking about waiting for 09' or even 5th Gen to upgrade from my 3.slow 95'. It's temping to just get an 08' with these great offers the dealerships have on all trucks and SUV's though.

I was really hoping that a Trail Teams 4Runner would be in the works, I think I'll definitely wait for something like that to come along because the FJ Trail Teams is beautiful.

05Rrunner, did you get this iformation off of a website somewhere? if so, could you post the address please?

I think I'm more interested in the 2010 4Runner. I think they have to keep it body on frame, but they are going to also HAVE to have better fuel economy. I'm thinking they are going to cut some weight and perhaps ad a diesel???

I see the 4Runner getting dropped altogether rather than Toyota changing it to a uni-body for the next gen. If it goes uni-body, it's called a Highlander.

The only thing I would want off the FJ Runner is the rims. The rest of it looks like I'm at Hot Import Nights looking at an Integra with Supra/MR2 lights all over it. I highly doubt the FJ Runner will come to fruition, it was a SEMA project.

IMHO I dont see them Dumping the 4 Runner with them adding a trail edition for 09 . Adding a Locker and the other items for off road seems to indicate some level of commitment to the vehicle and also listening to consumer requests . ....Just my thought though.

Do we even know if this will happen ??

Anyone find any info other than C&D article ?

I know for a fact that it will happen, but you guys will just have to keep wondering until you see it with your own eyes! The only thing I can seem to determine is if the 16" wheels are for sure and if they will be unique or from the FJ.

It's a step in the right direction , this generation (4th) 4runner has been under rated by most since it was introduced. I think this is a great thing and look forward to maybe a TRD version.

I really like how the FJ Runner looks, although I have to agree that it probably wont go into production but it looks very nice, combines the best of both vehicles in my opinion, I love the front of the FJ but prefer the space and body of the 4Runner.

If the Trail Teams 4Runner looks as nice as the FJ Trail Teams I'll be first on the waiting list for one, I hope we get to see them soon.

Maybe a 4Runner with a tire swing on the back of it? and some nice TRD rims like the FJ has, black bumpers with some off-road lights the have a "4R" on them? haha I wish I was good with PhotoShop and could make my prefect 4Runner come to life.

Well it looks like no changes to the V8's for '09. I'm buying an '08 at a big discount.

It's possible 2009 might be the last year for the V-8 fulltime 4wd.
This version is made for "USA only" and times are changing.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Will they give back some of the ride height too that they lost back in '01?

I'm new posting here, but I've been reading this forum for a long time now. I noticed that you always seem to have the opinion that the 3rd generation 4Runner is superior to the 4th generation when it comes to driving offroad. You always mention the fact that the 3rd generation had a rear locker aviailable, even though it was not available every model year.

Now that the 4th generation is going to have an optional rear locker, you start talking about an inch of ride height. Why do you have to hate so mucn on the 4th generation? Your 4Runner is nice and I like the factory rear locker, but whenever you talk about the 4th generation, you look like a hater. Sure, the front end of the newer 4Runners is a bit lower than some 3rd generation 4Runners, but that can be changed quite easily and cheaply.

Dude, you should just chill with the attitude against the newer generation 4Runners. One of your more recent posts shows a video of your rig climbing a hill and you had to say that you wouldn't want to try that in a 4th generation 4Runner.

Stop the hating and just enjoy your rig. Nobody will think your 4Runner is any less special after Toyota brings back the factory locker to the 4th generation 4Runners.

I think this is as close to a TRD edition as well see with the 4th gen. The rear locker is nice , but I would not want to sacrifice rear Atrac for it.

I kinda there is really nothing overly special about a TRD edition. No knocking it but it's like the FX4 F150 or the Z71 Chevys. yes it usually has different shocks , tires ect... but I think do better by putting your own shocks & tires on and probably cheaper .

The TRD FJ , special color , rims , BFG's , shocks , not really overly significant for the prices they were asking for them.

Just my thoughts ,

Falls, i am not sure what your experience is with locker(s), but a rear locker is superior to rear ATRAC off-road. One can make an argument about front locker vs. front ATRAC for steering reasons, but a rear locker is better than rear ATRAC over most (if not all) off-road terrain.

The nice thing about Toyota ATRAC + rear locker combo is that the rear locker is selectable. That is, if you don't want the rear locker, then turn it off and you have 4-wheel ATRAC...so, you won't sacrifice anything if you don't want to use the rear locker. But, i can tell you that once you have use rear locker, you will want it ON most of the time while you're off-road. The rear locker ON + ATRAC in the front is pretty ideal for most off-road terrain. :) I love it when Toyota offered this combo on the FJ.

Although one can argue that one can go aftermarket and get most of the "modifications" on the Trail Edition, it is nice to have it straight from factory with a warranty. Remember, the water resistant seats are very nice. If you buy aftermarket water-resistant seat covers, then it will likely NOT be compatible with the seat-mounted front side airbags. Bilsteins shocks are not cheap aftermarket either...correct me if i am wrong, but a set of Bilsteins probably runs around $500-800...and probably close to $1000 including labor. In addition, supposedly, Toyota spec out the valve adjustment in the Bilstein shocks...so, i am not sure if the aftermarket Bilstein is the same as the Toyota Trail Edition Bilsteins.

If the Trail Ed. uses 16 rims, then does it mean that it has the smaller front brakes??

No .
the brakes remain the same: the larger 13" rotor like the SE and FJ get
They change the back-space/off-set to clear the caliper .
The same wheel can be found on the FJ (16").

Thanks Thai , I did not know the ATRAC was on both axles and you could just select to lock the rear. Best of both worlds . I agree The aftermarket modifications are nice and one could argue that but coming from the factory is a major plus for me , since this is my little expedition vehicle AND my daily driver . I like that Idea . Though finding that balance between the 2 is always a challenge

There should be no reason you could not upgrade to a 32" 265/75/16 tire , but who knows , it would be tight maybe. I like the 16" rim idea. I also love my V8 to death, but the V6 is a good enough engine that I wouldn't bother me if I decided to but one . I wonder what rims it will have on it ? I also heard if the offset / back space is different on a 16" rim they would clear the larger brakes , don't know what truth there is to that though.

Hopefully it will be out by Feb. atleast it will be worth a look.

To bad I have to spend money and put new tires on this one , but really have no choice. The modified 4R's here are some really nice rigs , but for me I need the reliability and ride comfort to an extent since I drive so much.

This would all be nice and good if it's out when my lease is up (feb.09) because I was just going to buy mine out since I have a cheap buyout , I know the vehicle history , I like it ALOT , and I have very little of my own money into it. ( long story ) . If it wasn't for this trail edition coming out and my options were basically the selection I have now , I would just keep it.

With the black trim its supposed to have I would love to see it in white or silver and see what it looks like . I still love the look of the White FJ with the black trim trail team edition it would be sweet if the 4R was similar .
