- I don't know...this edition just does not appeal to me because I have to give up too many goodies (JBL system for instance). The ONLY real pluses of this package are: ATRAC and rear locker.
For ME, i would get the FJ instead because you get more...this "trail edition" 4runner seems half-assed in execution from Toyota.
If you look at the picture of the instrument panel there is no rear power tailgate window switch. There is a dummy plug where the switch used to be. look just to the left of the HVAC display.
I wonder if the switch got relocated or the rear tailgate window no longer rolls down

No fogs either............ It looks like a really bare bones SR5. Depending on pricing, this could make for a good trail rig.

They didn't do anything special with this rig with exception to the locking rear end...in fact they took quite a bit away.
Sport Edition is the way to go...who the hell wants a front bumper with covers over where the fog lamps are suppose to be?!!...oh I know, you can have them installed as an option. Crappy marketing if you ask me...
The only thing different about the new SE's I'd want on my own is the color keyed grill. I'm ok with the smoke, but I really don't like fake chrome to begin with...and that's what you get with the SE...it's all about weight reduction and cost cutting...the trail edition is nothing special in my opinion.

I'm sure Toyota is still manufacturing all three trim levels, in both V6 and V8 and in 2WD and 4WD. Most likely the regional distributors are not ordering V8's because most car buyers trying to find something more fuel efficient. I was at the dealer this past weekending looking at a 2009 Tacoma and to check out the backup cam. The rep said, when gas was at it's high in June and July, they were completed sold out of Yaris, Corolla and Prius. They couldn't keep them on the lots.
The regional distributor orders in configurations in which they think will sell. When I bought my 4Runner, the only 2WD available was a SR5 V6. Everything else is 4WD. The same reason, the only readily available 4Runners with navigation are 4WD V8 Limiteds.
The Trail Edition looks like it has some tradeoffs. Less comfort content, but more off-road stuff. Not sure I'm willing to trade in my 06 for this ... Now need to wait 6 months before we see the 2010 4Runner.
Also Toyota really does not spend much on the 4Runner marketing. The website is barely updated, using the same photos for the last three (now four) years.
The LandCruiser site is updated for 09, and has some new photos - why not the 4Runner ?

Wow, Toyota actually do something to further improve the 4Runners already quite good offroad-ability and just about everyone here complains. WTF? There are countless complaints on this board and others about the lack of a diff lock on the 4th gens, and the last 2 years of the 3rds, and now people are saying 'Is that all?' Unbeleivable. A diff lock is a HUGE offroad performance booster and arguablly the single best improvement you can do followed closely by tire choice. It doesnt have fogs? Who cares? Fog lights are pretty much useless offroad. They are too low to be of any real value and if you do take it somewhere where the diff lock is going to be needed chances are you'll be smashing them on rocks or something anyway. At least you can get an offroad bumper without having to throw them out. And with rapidly declining sales of the V8, do you really think they would offer that? Not a chance in hell. While I am always a fan of more power offroad, the V6 is more than adequate.
Toyota deserve positive feedback for this option, not complaints. Otherwise they'll drop it before you know it.

If you go back and re-read the comment about the fogs you will see that the person who wrote that comment actually thought this was a good thing. You are coming off extremely defensive over nothing it's just a vehicle. It's not like we are voting on a candidate for president

Yeah, maybe I do need to calm down, I'm just really disappointed that people who hardly ever go off road in the first place (Thai excluded) start rubbishing this vehicle and its features.

My main disappointment is that Toyota did not go all the way with the off-road mods as they did with the TRD package in 2007 and Trail Team package in 2008. But, then again, with the SUV market going to hell, i guess that i can't blame Toyota for keeping the price down (thus, limit the extent of modifications).

I have no issue with the switch not there. I just wondered if this means the rear glass does not roll down. I can't imagine that they would put a manual crank on the inside of the back tailgate. I never roll my rear window down and so It does not make any difference to me

*sigh* Will we ever get a manual tranny 4Runner again? Cause it's auto only now, I can't seem to even find a '99 or '00 manual one cause no one seems to want to give them up. 
Also, up here in Canada, we don't even get the Urban Runner. That's the one I'd love to get....if it came in manual. For now, I'll just drive my car until I eventually find a manual '99 or '00 SR5 V6 and just dream about the new 4Runner. Who knows what 2010 will bring. I do love the color keyed front grille on the Trail Edition though. I personally dislike chrome. I think the new 4Runners are awesome vehicles though and would love to have one as a second car. If it were manual, I'd be more likely to buy it cause then I'd use it as my primary car. Anyone know what Canada will be getting for '09? There's no info on that yet.

I'll tell ya right now...I'm passing on an 08 SR5 for a pretty darn good price to go with the Trail Edition, THAT IS if I can get it in Salsa Red. Main reasons....
1. I want the perforated steering wheel(used to having them in my Audi/VW's and love it),
2. Want the black tubular side steps and rack
A. Can't get that on the SR5's unless you get the urban B. You can't get Salsa Red in the UE C. I don't like alcantara. Wears after a while and beads up...had it in my Audi and didn't like it. C. If you get the sport, yeah you get the hood scoop but you get ugly grey/black side steps and rack
3. I want the color keyed grill and door handles not available on the SR5.
4. Lockable diff
5. 16" wheels(which I'd probably sell anyway
6. TomTom (which I'd also sell to get a Kenwood 8120
I really don't care about the fogs. I live in fog central(central valley CA) and I NEVER use fogs. White fogs are pointless. And fogs WITH headlights defeat the purpose. Just hope it has a spoiler. If not I guess I can order one with.

What I want off the TE 4Runner
All I would really want off the Trail Edition is the Bilsteins. My shocks are in need of replacement, but finding quality suspension parts for this thing has been tough.
There were all kind of options for my Gen 2.
Does anyone know if these Bilsteins are the same as the same as the HDs available from TireRack?
