2011 Cylinder misfire...

Hey everyone... I could use some help here...I did some searching but didnt find anything specific to the 5th Gen...
the 4Runner has been running fine, no problems for the first 3 and 1/2 years...went to start it this morning, the dash was going nuts! Check engine light, traction control light, and 4LO light flashing! Engine running rough, I mean reeeeaaally rough. Trudged it down to the auto parts store, plugged up the code reader and it said Code P0030 Cylinder 4 Misfire.

Is this a simple plug/coil fix? Anyone else out there have the same issue? Kinda suprised to see an issue like this, four 4Runners and this is the first issue with any of them...

How's the battery? and have you done anything to the vehicle recently?

Are you sure about the 4Lo light being on? Because that is an oddball out of the usual ones.

At this point it could be a coil, spark plug, ect. Have you tried clearing the DTCs and swapping the coils to see if it moves to a different cylinder?

Any aftermarket alarm or remote start system installed? Check around the engine compartment for any chewed hire harnesses. Pull that plug and have a look to see if it is physically damaged or built up oil. Pull another plug to compare. Swap coil and plug to another cylinder.

Don't drive it if it has an ongoing misfire, you will plug up the cat$.

No recent work...no aftermarket alarms....changed the battery out about 3 months ago. Here is a pic of the dash...

With the VSC and 4lo lights on, I think you have stored codes other than just the misfire. If you don't have access to techstream, I would take the vehicle to a Toyota dealership for diagnosis. Being under 60K miles, you are well within the powertrain, and possibly within goodwill of the bumper to bumper warranty.

Swapped coils, checked plugs and fuses...cleared codes, and disconnected battery....same code and lights came back....bummer. I guess I'll have to pay the stealership to figure it out... : [

Update...

Just wanted to give everyone an update on this issue: seems like a rodent of some sort chewed thru the wiring to the #4 cylinder coil. After looking close there is a spot on top of the engine, under the engine cover that is a really good nesting spot for small rodents. I will have to try and figure out a way to keep them out of there...

wow, might have to lace that area with rat poison every winter and reapply every now and then.
