2011 SR5 Tint Question

First time poster - found this site and have a quick question for those in the know.

I just bought a 2011 4runner SR5 4x4. It appears that the previous owner did not apply any tint to the windows and all rear windows are lightly tinted (factory glass?)

I am looking to either 1. match the front to the back or 2. tint the entire vehicle. Now my state law says 35 front and any % on the back. I am looking to go about 20% all the way around. What have you guys found is the best route to get a uniform look matching the factory privacy glass in the back windows as well as the rear window? Do you get 20 or 30 on the front and then have 50 applied to remaining windowns?

I am not looking to go limo all the way around but still looking to go dark enough to look nice but stay uniform - any help would be appreciated. Thanks-

My wife is at the tint shop right now getting ours done. The guy said the factory tint is about 28%.
We're getting 30 on the fronts to match.

I've done 20-25% but not anymore. It's just too difficult to see out sometimes.

I just saw that thread after I registered and posted this thread.

Looks like some go 30 or 35 on front and their hapiness varies - one guy looks like he did 30 on back 15 on front and said it matches real well. Might be an option. Another said 30 on front matches the factory perfect without having to even get tint on the rear -

just looking to get some better UV/heat protection as well as darken up the back. Such a dilema - wish you could just test out a ton of options before paying them to put it on. Thanks for the response though.

Any major cons to putting tint over the factory tint? If the back is a factory 28 and 45/50 is put over it - would that match 20 on front? I know these are confusing questions but I want to darken the back and rear glass with tint and match the front as close as I can - Just not looking to go full on limo with it.

To calculate what the new % would be I just take the stock window % and multiply it by the tint %. So say you get 50% on windows that are 28% the windows would then be at 14%.

0.28 * 0.50 = 0.14

Therefore if you get 15% up front you "shouldn't" notice a difference. The factory tint doesn't really have any heat reduction so getting the back windows tinted as well should help with heat/UV protection.

Hope this helps. The pics don't do it justice but it looks perfectly uniform in person and during the day I can not tell any difference from the front to back (and I have a mild case of OCD).

We had 15% Llumar ceramic installed up front, 50% Llumar ceramic over the rear factory tint, Air Blue windshield/sunroof with 5" 15% strip across top of windshield. Everything looks uniform and keeps it sooo much cooler. All for $310.

Also keep in mind that the front windows are also a weee bit tinted from the factory, I forget the value but ~70-90% transmittance. This is troublesome for people whom want to tint their windows at exactly the legal limit only to find out that it's actually a hair over the legal limit when your friendly neighborhood officers pulls you over and measures your windows for tint compliance olice:

I am not sure how your local shop is but my shop had no problem with cutting a few test squares and throwing it on each window for me to compare before the actual tint was done. Might not hurt to ask if you are really trying to achieve uniformity.

Thanks a ton for the info and the pics. And the math refresher was good as well - I will check some pricing on the 50 back 15 front as well as only 30 up front and see what they say. I will also see if they will cut some squares for me - my guess is they wont. Customer service down here on the border isn't all that great - but we will see. Thanks again

I had 30 installed over the windows behind the driver, and 15 up front. Not going to lie, it is hard to see at night for me..... but it sure cuts down on sunshine and prying eyes.

Can't take a interior pic, I'm 8000 miles away from my T4R. Do you mean how dark does the tint effect the interior? Day driving is fine, night is OK on lit roads. Night backing up, I will lower my rear windows.

Yeah I guess my question was a little off - I was meaning when you look out the window from the inside can you tell the difference in tint color btwn back windows and side windows. Thanks

Yes, you can tell a slight difference. Tint people advised that it was impossible to match perfectly.
