I found the following limitations with Entune on my 2012 Trail.

1. iphone 4s requires usb cable to be plugged in to use Internet for Entune features.
2 For whatever reason, iHeartRadio, email, movietickets.com are not available on my Entune. Any idea why?
3. When i stream blue tooth music, some songs wont display the album art, but when it's plugged into the usb, album art displays. Any idea why?

Got any other additions?

I was planning on upgrading from my BB Bold to an iPhone this summer, but now I'm having second thoughts about that...

I was also planning to plug my iPod Touch into the USB port in the glove box, but that wouldn't work if I also had to plug in the iPhone. Not sure which way I'm going to go with this yet.

Can't help you with #2, I haven't gotten into the full Entune set-up yet.

Just purchased a 2012 4R LE w/Entune and have experienced the same things. Some notes:

1. The salesman told me that I would have to use a USB cable to run Entune since I have an iPhone 4...apparently the way that Entune is set or some limitations that Apple put on it. (on a related note, my wife just got a BMW Z4 which has a hard drive in the sound system, but Apple has put a stop in so the songs won't copy from her iPhone/iPod to the hard drive.)

2. I haven't had any issues with email...haven't yet tried movietickets.com or iHeartRadio. Gas prices and other apps seem to be working OK.

3. Same problem here with album art...not sure why but probably another Apple stopper put in the iPhone.:ak472:

Just out of curiosity, are you lauching the Entune app on your iPhone before plugging in the usb cable? This has to be done for it to work properly, I was told by the salesman.

Good luck bro!

Iheart radio and iMovie tickets aren't even displayed on my unit. Are they on yours? Can u use email on the entune unit?

I never plug my Iphone 4s into the usb. I use Bluetooth to stream my music, Pandora, whatever. I haven't paid much attention to the album art, but I wouldn't be surprised if that doesn't always work.

I find most of the Entune Apps to be gimmicky or not useful. Why would I use Bing, Movietickets, Weather on there? I don't think it is useful. I either use my phone (while parked) or have my wife look it up.

Luckily the Navigation doesn't require the phone to use. That would really be a bummer.

Are you sure you can use entune without plugging in your 4s? you're the first person i've heard that has accomplished this.

I have found that bluetooth only works for phone calls and streaming music from my iPhone. I don't think you can use the other apps (Bing, Weather, Stocks, etc.) w/o plugging the iPhone into the usb port.

I agree with 4Run4Life:

I mainly use the nav, bluetooth for phone and then Satellite or FM radio.

The Pandora and bing apps works well over bluetooth using my Driod Razor. The other apps don't seem useful to me so I have not tried them. I don't get album art when I am streaming music over bluetooth.

So this is what I found out through my own testing with Apple products on Entune. You need to have either an iPhone or iPad that has both the hotspot support on it and bluetooth both turned on for it to work wirelessly.

I tried my new iPad with LTE on my 12 TE with both options turned on and connected right away. Tried my friend's unjailbroken iPhone with no hotspot support and the internet would not work, but plugging it did. So I went ahead and jail broke his iPhone and added hotspot tethering on his iPhone and it worked that way.

If its not jailbroken and with the hotspot tethering the internet will not work on the actual display panel. You would have to plug it in like what some people have already done.

Just me 2 cents on this issue. :keyboard:

Yeah, except those apps I mentioned (bing, weather, movietickets). I stream music from my phone and Pandora (the app on my phone, not Entune) over Bluetooth everyday. The navigation doesn't need the phone to be plugged in either.

Let me know if I'm not being clear. I will try to explain further.

So I have never had to plug in my iPhone 4s since day 1 to get the internet features to work.

The key is this: It has to be JailBroken and using a Bluetooth tethering program. I use an app called MyWi 5.0 - it costs a couple of bucks but enables wifi, bluetooth, and usb tethering. I leave my bluetooth tethering on at all times and the second my truck starts up it connects and I can use Pandora etc on the headunit.

Now, on to the apps. Movies, heartradio, etc... are not available yet. They are on Pruis's and the likes - but not the T4R - not YET. I have spoken with Toyota personally and they said early Summer 2012 they would release an update that will add those apps to our units. The only ones that are available at the moment are Weather, Pandora, Sports, and Stocks (not sure if Fuel and Traffic require internet, never been without it in my truck).

Hope that helps, if you have any other questions just ask, I'm a software developer by trade and have been following the Entune releases closely since inception (well, since I got my truck anyway).

Toyota is working on a fix for the iPhones. Apparently Apple changed something in iOS5 that doesn't allow internet sharing over the bluetooth. If you still have iOS4, it should work unplugged. They'll get it sorted via an update to the Entune app, I'm sure.

My Prius v is coming with Entune and I'm pretty excited to use it while traveling. I'm sure it won't get used a lot day to day, but when driving in an unfamiliar city, I'm sure it will be very useful.

The email portion may be relate to the same reason you cannot get text messages w entune using an iPhone . The reason is that the iPhone does not have a bluetooth profile called MAP message access profile. I know that BB should be able do it since they do. It is the same reason why I could not use those features on my SHO sync system.

i think that might actually be because the iPhone can only run one BT stack at a time.

Not sure what the reason is but it is a gripe of many on other forums with Apple. It is a hit and miss with other manufactors. I My Motorola Z9 has it and i enjoyed that feature not having to looking at my phone constantly. As long as I am alone driving of course.

i think Apple's official reason was for theft protection so someone couldnt bluetooth into your phone and steal your info, like secured shell.

it seems it may be a limitation of the BT chipset rather than software since i havent seen any Cydia tweak for this.

Entune

Here is the skinny on the Iphone4s and Entune on the 2012 4Runner.

First you need to download the Entune app and install it on your IPhone and make sure you register. Make sure that the Entune app is turned signed on on your Iphone before plugging in your USB cable to the USB port on your $Runner. It is my understanding that with Apple's last OS update on the phone you can no longer connect your Iphone to the internet by just using bluetooth however you can connect to the internet using the USB cable.

Now, I found that you can connect to the Internet without the cable if you have purchased the additional Personal Hotspot data plan which I have. I am no longer restricted to using just my cable to connect my Iphone to the internet. Once I activate my personal hotspot (without the cable) I am able to connect my Entune system to my Iphone and connect to the internet I am able to use Bing, Pandora, Weather and Fuel Prices etc....

I am a little frustrated that we do not have the additional apps such as iHeart Radio, Open Table, Movie Tickets etc.? Not sure when that will be released. If anyone knows please send me an update. I hope this helps everyone.

email function

I can successfully connect my iPhone 4s using the USB cable and have no problem (except for a slow startup) streaming via Bluetooth. Of course, the Internet apps don't work over Bluetooth (yet, I hope).

Question, though, I don't see any option for the e-mail setup. It's just grayed out. What's that for? And can you also read texts on the Entune display? That functionality doesn't seem to be enabled on my 4R.

I did update the new flash a couple weeks ago. Iheart Radio is working as are the other couple updates.

Audio quality seems fine on Pandora, etc. As of late, though, I've just been using Songza and Spotify via Bluetooth streaming and not plugging in the USB.

Another gripe, though -- why didn't they leave a hole for the cord to come out of the glovebox?!?

I agree completely...I think a much better design would have been to put a dock in the small rectangular box in the console just above the shifter. This box is basically worthless for putting anything in but it seems to be the perfect size for an iPhone dock. Then you could just plug in your iPhone and not have to run that stupid cable to the glove box.
