2012 LE - leftover stock, what to pay?

I found a 2012 4Runner limited today at the dealer, still brand new, 4x4, fully loaded. What would be a screaming deal for something like this, that is leftover inventory from 2012, and that they want to get rid of?

Depending on how you plan to pay for it, I'd offer 20% below sticker and see how bad they want to get rid of it.

I tried to deal on a new 2012 TE before i bought my used 2012. They wouldn't budge and didn't seem to care that it was a 2012. They came 4.9% off the sticker price and wouldnt go any lower.

I'm baffled by this too. I spoke with a dealer that has had a 2012 TE on their lot for 180 days and they are unable/ unwilling to make any better deal than you can make on a 2013. I asked them why anybody would buy it instead of just getting a 2013 for the same money. No real answer to that one.

Regardless of all the opinions and stories you get from a forum, the truth is; noone here knows. It depends on too many things, a biggie being competition and availability in your area, others are trade-in, financing, on and on ad nauseum.

Basics: If you can get 10% off msrp, it's good. More is better. Evidence suggests that '12s are not heavily discounted vis a vis '13s. It is what it is.

I was able to get my 2012 LE for 7.5% off MSRP (3mos ago).
MSRP $41885, dealer matched my USAA pricing of $38711 and 3% financing, no trade-in. My LE only other options were crossbars and carpet mats. I can imagine now you can prolly get a better deal.

Thanks guys. I was really trying to understand what other people in similiar circumstances have come out paying.

The dealer had this one stickered around $40,500, and i offered $36k. Was my offer a lowball? No doubt, but after the salesman indicated numerous times that they really want to get rid of this 2012, and it's been sitting there for nearly a year, i wasnt about to pay anywhere near their asking price.

I'm in no rush to buy, but would be willing to jump on a good deal. In the meantime i'm just holding off for a loaded '13 to scoop up at invoice, once i find the color combo/options I want. :hatsoff:

I just bought a 2012 Limited on Wednesday. Every option available. Sticker was $44,972. They came down $1,500, 1.9% for 72 months, $0 down, Platinum extended warranty. I can live with that.

Same thing happened when I bought mine this past January, except it was between a 2011 and 2012. The 2011 was in stock so they obviously want to get rid of what's on the lot. I low-balled them on the 2011 but they wouldn't come down. There was no benefit in to settling for the previous year model. I ended up ordering a 2012, which too about 3 weeks, for the same price as the 2011.

Just when I thought I was going to pull the trigger on a '13, I found a mint preowned 2012 Limited with 9k miles, in the color combo I want. It's fully optioned with a sticker of $38,800. The dealer has agreed to $36k.

Decent price?

Is that $36K price plus tax, tag, etc. or $36K out the door including all of the tacked on BS dealer fees? And by sticker, do you mean original MSRP was $38,800? I would probably want to be 20% off the original MSRP on that car.

It is $36k plus tax/fees/etc. I don't expect much in taxes though since I'm trading in a vehicle.

I should've clarified, but their asking price was $38,800. I offered 35k and they want $36k.

Well, there is much more to the deal. Are they killing you on the trade? They could get you a great deal on their 4R and kill you on the trade and the cost of the whole deal may be pretty bad. I'm allowing for folks to 'get' me on my trade to save me some headaches on selling myself and saving $2K in sales tax on the new vehicle.

To judge this deal overall, you need to take your trade into consideration. If the MSRP on their car was originally around $42K, I'd be pushing to get it at 80% of that number and getting NADA trade value on your old one. If they have sweetened the deal by giving you a bunch for your old car, this price may not be as bad as it appears.

Add in any non essential dealer fees to this price they are dangling as those are BS fees that are just dealer profit.

So their price may actually be much higher:
4Runner $36,000
Dealer Prep $599
Service Fee $199
Reconditioning Fee $99

All of that kind of fluff needs to be added together to get your actual price. The only thing not mixed in are the essentials like tax and tag.

They said 38k, you said 35k, they said 36k, so that's about right dab in the middle of it no? If you really like the truck I say got for it.

There doesn't seem to be many 4Runner Limiteds for sale private party nationwide, and not one 2012 Limited with low miles for $36k.

The trade they are offering isn't bad either.

I just purchased a brand new 2012 Limited that had been sitting on the dealer lot for 120 days ... no trade-in, Shoreline Blue with running boards, 15 speaker premium sound, and all-weather mats. The MSRP was high $42k / low $43 as I recall ... I got them down to $38,750. I ended up ultimately spending a little more because I ordered the carpet floor mats, roof rack cross bars, cargo cover, exhaust tip, & mud guards, too. But overall, I was very happy with the price I got. After the deal was all said & done, I pulled the salesman aside & asked him to be honest with me about whether or not he had ever sold a brand new one at that price level ... he said, "never"! My trick though was that I had a new car buying service that I used through an RV club that I'm a member of that greatly helped. I might have been able to get the price down to $38k with a different dealer, but I would have had to fly to Columbus, OH, to get it. Hope this helps.
