2012 ltd questions

Hello guy's and gal's i am looking to purchase a 2012 LTD with 3rd row and nav. I am a ASE Master Tech for 20+ years and have always been a big fan of 4Runners. Is the 2012 something i can drive for 10+years and put 250k+ miles on (with propper maintence) without it falling apart in 3-5 years (like many other SUV'S in that class) before its even paid for! Now that the 5th gen has been out for a few years, tell me what are you seeing going wrong or failing on them. I havent seen many in my shop! Thanks in advance!

OP I think you can trust the 4runner as much if not more than any other vehicle on the market... this is my second (first was a 97)
 
9500 miles on mine and no problems. The stock stereo is lame--using these threads, I replaced the stock speakers and had a local stereo shop put in a Kicker sub under a front seat. It rocks now. Also, you can add the Toyota mud guards even if you have running boards.
 
Here is a list of all known Technical Service Bulletins http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/110839-5th-gen-maintenance-documentation-reference.html. As of now there are no known recalls on the 5th gen after 3 years. Sorta says something about the vehicle. Here are a few keywords to search out during your own time that have caused some owners to complain:

Brake Dive (mainly SR5)
Noisy brake pedal (all models)
Poor OEM tires (all models)
Stock wheel width (mostly LE models)
Door and sheet metal thickness (all models)
Premature cargo carpet wear (very few cases)
Rear lift gate strut failure (few cases)


These are some of the things some owners complain about. I'm sure I forgot a few but nothing major I don't think. Make sure you read the TSB's in the link posted above. Some of the things have been fixed for the 2012 year (headlight lens, axle wrap) but you might want to make sure.

The 4Runner does not have all the cool gadgets like Jeep GC or Ford Explorer but does have an exceptional drivetrain that is very robust and durable. One guy here already has 90+K miles on his 2010 with no problems. I have right at 40K on mine with only the headlight and driveshaft clunk issue and it is getting fixed Thursday. Good luck.
 
I just bought a 2012 SR5 after having a 99. I still have the 99 and will keep it forever. 185k on it now. The reliability of my old one was one of the major selling points of getting a new one. Hopefully I can have as much luck with it.

Same here. Bought my 97 new and 15 years later and 167,000 miles still running strong. That's the reason I bought my 11 SR5 and just hit 4,000 trouble free miles so far. Hopefully it will last as long.
 
I personally really highly dislike the iPod interface for the JBL 15 speaker. that's my biggest grieve with the car. the Etune I'm sure is better but smaller screen and gimmick applications, others complain about it.

That and have had the lift gate blown like 1engieer said along with one of the suspension struts. Both blown before 30K miles and both covered under warranty.

other than that, wife and I absolutely love the car. To the point to where we are fighting for who keeps it after the next car purchase.

I despise the party mode switch at this point in time. Will see if it's something else in a couple of months.
Sounds small and petty? Well it is. I've gotta find something to complain
about.

Mine is a 2010 LDT with 20K miles. It's not quite stock anymore, but it's holding up fine so far. Had the throttle body TSB done and getting the headlight TSB done now (dealer is waiting on the assemblies to come in)

2011 LE Owner

I have a 2011 LE and have 23k now, not a single issue other than I have scratched up the inside door handle with my watch, reaching up to open the door.

Been happy so far.

30K trouble-free on mine. A couple SR5-specific things I didn't like (shocks, tires, caster) but all easily corrected.

I want a hunky, BOF, mid-sized, 4WD SUV.... and I want a good one, reasonably priced. Under those criteria, it's the only game in town.

I watch the car/SUV market constantly, and I'd buy this truck again. In fact, if the '13s struck me right, I'd probably buy an LE.

'11 Limited 12k miles zero issues...well a couple self inflicted but they don't count :nono: :)

As for 10+ years and 250k miles who knows. :shrug: But with Toyota's reputation for reliability and your expertise as a certified tech i'm pretty sure that's easily attainable, and probably still have some resale value.

You'll have to ask yourself if there's anything else currently available that has better reliability, based on past track record.
 
2011 sr5, 15,000 miles. i had the windshield noise in the winter, and have experienced the lumbar issue a few times. also have had some problems with the driveshaft clunk, or whatever that is.

overall, very happy with the vehicle. it is stock, no modifications. if you pull the trigger, see if you can bargain for some better tires. the stock tires do suck. if not, some on this site have been able to immeditely trade them in and get some cash from tire shops. this is a great forum, with very helpful members.

i only drive about 10k-12k a year. with that in mind, i want this truck to last me at least 15 years. i have not seen anything yet that would make me think it will not.
 
32k on my 2010 stock Limited. My driver's side seat has the lumbar crunch and my headlights are oxidizing. There are TSB's for each of those so I'm confident my dealer will fix. Only regular maintenance per the owners manual at this point. Truck is still as solid as the day I first drove it home.
