According to the Toyota website and owner's manual we have a class 3 hitch which is rated for 5000lbs towing weight and 500lbs max tongue weight.

anyway, at least i can carry my motorcycle which is about 420lbs

That's a good bit of weight and with the carrier you're probably pushing close to 500lbs. There was a long thread about carrying motorcycles on the back of the 4R with a hitch mount, though I can't find it right off the bat. That much weight back there will cause a large amount of sag which will bring your headlights up and could blind other drivers. I and most other people would recommend airbags such as Airlift 1000 kit or Firestone Airbags. It will help raise the rear end of the car and level it out so you don't bottom out completely hitting the slightest bump. They are relatively inexpensive (I think someone posted an amazon link and they're $88 or so) and easy to install.

I used to haul my DR350 this way on my 2001 Blazer and agree that if you are going to do it airbags are the way to go. It was pretty sketchy on the Blazer and I only did it once. The sag is just too much.

If you put airbags on the rear does it changed the maximum tongue weight? Is the weight only set at 500lbs because more will cause sag etc or is the max weight limit structural to the chassis?

The weight limits don't change...you are just able to handle the weight better.

Check out Antman and Titanpat57 build threads regarding the Airlifts. They both installed them with great results.
