2014 4Runner

so instead of studying for my midterms...

this is pretty much what most of us would do anyways.

Can you make the following additions...

Black Wheel Arch trim and TE roof rails?

I dont know why everyone is so upset.. It's a good thing our current trucks look better than the predator (courtesy of look171)

The front end reminds me of Darth Vader's mask mouthpiece.
I can almost hear it say "Luke I am your father".

I am not to cool with the rear bumper silver color,
other than that it looks good.

I never liked the black wheel well moldings on the trail.
So matching them to the body color works for me.

Never the less everyone has there own tastes and needs.

The photoshoped photo above makes the new 2014 look BADASS. Everyone getting upset over the prototype when we all know the final production model may look a bit different. Just a few changes like the photo above suggests and this Im all in with the new design. Cant wait for someone to get ahold of one and be the first to build one up

Could one of you guys photoshop the fog lights out and some LED strips in those bottom "gills?" I think that'd look a little better. Like we do on the '13 XB's

Got to agree with you on that. Can't wait till it is released. I think the value of my 2010 Trail will go up. In fact in Hawaii, Tacomas and 4runners barely lose any value anyway and I gotta think mine will actually go up with that fugly front end refresh.

2014--What's in a Name: Generation, Refresh, Annual . . .

The lead-up to the mid-cycle 5th Generation Refresh was a somewhat exciting as everyone discussed their "wish-lists" of possible changes. Many, especially long-term 4Runner owners, felt that changes would be mostly superficial/cosmetic . . . and of course they were right. However, hopes of at least a few substantial competitive upgrades like a 6-Speed transmission, direct injection or a few more HP (among numerous other things) unfortunately did not materialize. As well posted, this has lead to many less than enthusiastic "professional" reviews.

Among them, "Edmunds says: The new face of the 2014 Toyota 4Runner is bound to be polarizing. But even more controversial may be the fact that Toyota opted to retain so much dated hardware."

2014 Toyota 4Runner: New Look, Old-School Powertrain | Edmunds.com

I really like the proposed new interior upgrades on the TE, especially the all black dash (the TE two-tone gray really bothered me and is why I held-off purchasing, hoping the 2014 would address this and thankfully it has--I hope the new TE interior makes it to the final 2014 release). I really like the 2010-13 front end . . . but I also find I really like the new 2014 as well (at least in the pictures . . . will need to see in person to be sure). I am, however, like many, disappointed the AT is still the old 5-speed and the engine is still not direct injected and remains 270HP (However, I totally understand why those that purchased recently are happy--I would be too :) ).

Which leads me to wonder . . . what really is the significance/difference between the terms . . . Generation, Refresh and Annual as relates to upgrades or changes and what one can expect?

Generation change suggests a major substantial upgrade--and for the most part that appears to be somewhat true. However, after reading the annual 4Runner reviews after the 2010 5th Gen. release--from 2011-13 . . . the dissappointment expressed by reviewers with greater expectations would suggest that what was accomplished in this 2014 "Refresh" could also have been accomplished in any of those 2011-13 new model year upgrades. So given many current reviewers' disappointment that "dated harware" was not upgraded with this Refresh, does this then mean that there is not an especially significant difference between a Refresh year and an Annual upgrade year and that perhaps before the next 6th Generation comes out, a 2015 or 2016 Annual upgrade might result in a 6-Speed, Direct Injection or more HP?

Lastly, the 2014 for-sale release date is commonly stated to be the "end of summer." It seems like past years it has been September/October for the 4Runner. Given that many competitors 2014s are already out, any ideas if this year's release date will be any earlier? Thanks!

still no power tail gate?
would also like to see rear seat air controls and usb outlets, oil pressure gauge,
hopefully the information readout will give tire pressure readings
I just bought a 13 Limited so I'll probably wait at least 2-3 years before getting another

C'mon, Toyota fixed most frequent complains about led lights and mast antenna : )
The interior seems to look nicer, I'm not a big fan of exterior front end on pictures but I could live with that as long as approach/departure angles are not worse.

First, the engine is thoroughly modern. It is DOHC, dual VVTi, low friction roller rocker valve train, piston oil squirters, etc. It was designed new for 2010. Yes, it doesn't have DI. Most engines out there don't have DI and DI isn't the only way to make a good engine. As with anything, DI does have compromises (notably carbon buildup on the intake ports). When rubber meets the road, the 4Runner has acceleration equivalent to an Ecoboost F150 per Consumer Reports and gets competitive gas mileage with the CUVs out today. If the 5th gen still had the original 1GR, I'd be furious that the refresh didn't get a new engine. The current 1GR is a peach of an engine, IMO. The lazy throttle is 100% the problem.

Second, the 5AT is proven reliable and it is a good match for the torque curve of the 1GR. A 6AT mated to this engine would require a shorter final drive to compensate for the additional OD gear (Toyota's 6AT in the GX460 has the exact ratios of the 5AT in the 4Runner and Tacoma with an additional OD gear). At some point, before I had a child, I made an excel spreadsheet comparing the torque at the wheels at 70mph of the GR 4Runner in 5th and the UR GX460 in 6th gear. The wheel torque was practically identical. To me, that says that the 4Runner could theoretically have the 6AT of the GX, but it would spend a majority of the time in 5th gear because that is the scenario where you get the appropriate power to overcome drivetrain drag, aero drag, and rolling resistance at that speed. The V8 of the GX, and the additional torque of the V8 at ~2000 RPM makes the 6AT make more sense. I honestly believe that if the 4Runner got a V8, it would have gotten a 6AT. With the current configuration of the 1GR, the 6AT was probably into diminishing return land. Toyota's design philosophy is to design the engine and transmission as a couple. The AR 2.5L has a 6AT that is different from the 6AT you'll find with the GR 3.5L. The torque requirements are different and the transmission is optimized for that engine. That is why you didn't see the new for '07 6AT in the Camry V6 attached to the Camry I4 on the 6th gen redesign... it soldiered on with a 5AT that was designed with the AZ engine that preceded the AR. When the AR came out, it got the new tranny.

There is a method to the mayhem. Back to the 4Runner, it certainly doesn't help matters that the new 1GR 5AT combo sells in such low numbers. It is hard to justify the additional cost of developing the 1GR to work well with the 6AT when it only goes in a handful of vehicles. If the 4Runner weren't reasonably fast or reasonably efficient, it would be a different animal.

Assuming the TE, SR5, and Limited largely share bumpers and skirts, the SR5 and Limited got much better approach/departure angles than current.

Per MotorTrend: "Production is scheduled to begin August 26 in Japan. Dealer arrivals are on a September/October trajectory, depending on the dealer's location."

2014 Toyota 4Runner First Look - Motor Trend

We're told the 2010-2013 4Runner Trail, which relied heavily on black-colored, plastic body trim pieces to convey a sense of ruggedness, was polarizing to the customer base. In response, they are now silver. The 17-inch alloy wheels are also more conventionally styled now.

If touching a new door panel is any indication, the 4Runner's cabin will be a bit softer and more hospitable than it's ever been before. With more color for the exterior and interior, the 4Runner Trail mix is expected to grow from about 3 percent to 10 percent.

While there's only the lone Trail edition in existence at the moment, the base SR5 model will be the next to appear in the near future, followed with the topline Limited.

Production is scheduled to begin August 26 in Japan. Dealer arrivals are on a September/October trajectory, depending on the dealer's location.

LX570 or Landcruiser has all those features I believe, part of the incentive to step up in their marketing strategy/matrix I would imagine.

At least the production stays in Japan. Don't get me wrong, I buy american made when possible. But production must stay in Japan. The 4Runner tied to this event, had me worried about the production moving Texas with the Tacoma.

How will Shockworks / ARB desing a bumper to fit? Lots of lines / angles. What nightmare!

Oh, and it still isn't growing on me. If anything, it keeps getting worse.

I don't think TMMTX has the capacity. It carries Tundra and Tacoma (reg and access cab) volume right now. The double cab is Baja Mexico.

The next Sequoia is up in the air from what I've heard. It is built at TMMI, but rumor is that a lower cost Land Cruiser will replace it.

WTF???

I will be trading my 2010 in for the 2014... under one condition... they remove that ridiculous front bumper and headlights and install my 2010 bumper and headlights free of charge. Honestly, I think this is what a lot of us may end up doing.

This front end came out of nowhere. Whoever designed it should be fired... and will be soon enough once the atrocious numbers come back.

I don't think any refresh in the history of the 4runner has generated such negative feedback. Idiots! :ybrick:
