If you decide to go with OEM units, then yes you will need them. It is to my understanding that TYC is making the tail lamps now and that a seperate wiring harness is not needed. a couple of people on here have stated that the fit and finish is just like OEM. I have no idea if the part #'s I posted for the OEM have changed or not. If you call the dealer and give them the numbers, they can tell you if they've been superseded or not.

Here is where I bought my lights. I ordered them last week and got them today. They look great, but I have not installed them yet. They also did not come with a harness. I'll find out when I install them if they are plug and play or I need a harness.

Thanks for the info. I emailed the company (Midway Auto Supply) that ships them from Amazon for specifics making sure theirs is complete, harness and all for a complete plug and play, and would fit my 2011 with no problem. When I hear from them I'll post again.

True, No harness needed. Plug and play...I believe the part # from TYC ends in a 01. Double check that if you order. I found the info in this thread.

That'll be great! I should have my 2011 LE tomorrow for the first day!! Can't wait. I'll also let you know if it's plug and play being that I bought the TYC kind.

Also, just got in my LED lights from precision LED for all the lights on the inside and courtesy lights and license plate. Hope they look great. I'll upload a picture when I do it.

If its the same part numbers as the ones I ordered, you do NOT need the harness, its built into the light. Part numbers for TYC brand are:
left: TYC 11-6658-00
right: TYC 11-6657-00
Instructions with photos are in this thread, and a bunch of tips on how to pop the housing out without damaging your vehicle are also here (see my posts on page 17-18).
As for the nuts being super tight, never even noticed it, but I used my DeWalt impact gun to pull them off! I literally did the WHOLE installation in 9 minutes flat! Not rushing either, just knew exactly what the steps were by reading through this thread before I started.

Nope, I doubt it. Someone in this thread reported that the -01 part numbers did not have the correct plug like mine did and he had to order the harnesses for them.
Check a couple pages back for the-01 comments, and when you get them, please confirm that info here if you can so it helps others in the future.

Page 18 talks about the 00 and 01. It seems that the 01 needs the harness and 00 does not. That being said I got mine (the 01 part number) for $100 each. So even if you bought a 25 dollar harness you come out nearly 50 bucks ahead if you ordered the lights on amazon.
The 00 part number on amazon was 150 each.

Below is what I received from "Midway Auto Supply" who are the ones selling this part on Amazon. I'm just trying to get some clarification before I pull the trigger on the order, Midway says those part numbers supplied above are for the 2014-15 4Runners, but what you guys are saying is they will fit a 2011? I suppose the stock numbers she gives below are the "OEM" tail lamps for a 2011 Limited. I sent her another email for clarification.

They're giving you the part number for the 2011 stock lights. Read that thread and see the correct links to buy the newer lamps. I put a link on this page or the one just before this with the ones that I bought. Also, people have provided links with what to buy. It seems the 00 part number doesn't need a harness and the 01 does. Other than that they fit your car even though they are marked 2014-2015.

Did anyone replace the turn signal halogen with an LED
Also the lower part of the tail light (the red under the back up lights) --is there a bulb in there or is it just LED that is built in?
I guess a better question is how many bulbs are in the upgraded lights that I can change to LED?

There is only 2 that can be replaced to LEDs, make sure you add a capacitor if your gonna replace your turn signals to LEDs , youll get some hyper flashing going on.

I beleive you have to tap into it, i guess yes you need to splice in between . I replaced my rear turn signals with LEDs but it hyper flashed,when i found out i had to add a capacitor and mess with the wiring ,i changed my mind at put my stock bulbs back.

Adding a resistor seems pretty easy. My one question is this...
Since I went from the 2011 tail light to the newer version i have the extra harness to make my stock tail light harness fit with my upgraded tail lights. If I splice the stock harness it should be fine to slow the turn signal correct?
I'm assuming the splice location doesn't matter just as long as the signal is slowed by the time it hits the light and comes back.

You don't use a capacitor, you use a resistor to add a load back to the system. The standard bulbs require a load of xx amount of watts (ie., how many watts the light bulb is that you're replacing with the LED lamp), they sell these resistors online and most trailer hitch install shops should have them in stock.
Search amazon for "led resistor", you will find hundreds of these listed for 5-10 bucks. They will come with instructions, but if not, you will need to install them across the positive and negative wires of the turn signal's two wires.
