2014 LED tail lights

You don't use a capacitor, you use a resistor to add a load back to the system. The standard bulbs require a load of xx amount of watts (ie., how many watts the light bulb is that you're replacing with the LED lamp), they sell these resistors online and most trailer hitch install shops should have them in stock.

Search amazon for "led resistor", you will find hundreds of these listed for 5-10 bucks. They will come with instructions, but if not, you will need to install them across the positive and negative wires of the turn signal's two wires.

Sorry yeah I meant resistor. So it doesn't matter that my stock wires are plugged into the new plug that goes into the new tail lamps. Just add the resistor to the stock wires and I'll be good?

If you're just doing the rears in leds, you may not even need the resistors, according to this thread:

I'd say ask them since they've already done this mod, they will know better than I would, as I haven't bothered to change them out to led yet.

Try the bulb first, see if it hyperflashes. If it doesn't, you're good to go. If it does, then you'll need the resistors, put the stock bulbs back in, order the resistors, then install them and the led's.

Could soemone please tell me which two wires in the picture above that I should put the resistor on? I'm not sure which and don't want to put it on the wrong wries.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question. I just installed the 2014 tail lights and the bottom of the light, the part under the reverse light, does not light up. It doesnt on either side so I'm assuming this is normal. Is it just a reflector or something?

The red part at the base? It does not light up.

Did the guys in the other thread help you get the turn signals figured out, or were they okay without having to install the resistors?

Ok just making sure that they aren't supposed to light up. I guess they are reflectors?

I posted last night about the LED turn signal light. No response yet. I don't want to splice a wire if I don't have to. Also, I don't know which wires to splice. The picture I posted above is my harness and it has more than two wires. Plus it's plugged into the harness for the 2014 tail light. So I'm at a loss for what to do.
 
Have you tried the led lamps yet though? I'd try it and see if you get the fast flash before trying anything else.

It shouldn't hurt anything if you try it and they strobe flash, its a lower load on the circuit that causes the lights to strobe, which wouldn't be any different than having a burnt out bulb,as that too creates a lower load on the circuit.

The two wires you need to use the resistor on would be between the white/black stripe and the yellow wires. This would create the extra load on the turn signal circuit. You would tap into each wire, the resistor does not go in-line with them.

You really need to just throw the led lamps in there and see what it does before putting the resistor in, that'll tell you instantly whether you need it or not.

You're right. I'll just have to order some. Also, thank you for telling me how to wire it. Hopefully it wont come to that.

Looked at the wiring schematic to confirm, it may be light blue on the right side, left side should be yellow. When you pull the lamps out you'll be able to tell if it is light blue instead of yellow on the right.

So to confirm I would tap into the white/black and the yellow on the left.

Tap into white/black and blue on the right.

That would be correct, but if you'd like to make absolutely sure, put turn signals on and check the yellow and sky blue wires for a 12 volt pulse with either a test light or a multimeter.

I never saw a final confirmation that this worked. I just tapped those exact lines on my 2010 and they work flawlessly. Thanks for the help fellas.
 
Well I finally pulled the trigger on the TYC lights and installed them yesterday. I ran into a couple problems though. The main problem is the passenger side light got water in it the first time I went through a car wash. The first picture is from this morning. It seems the condensation got worse over night. The second and third picture are from an hour after the car wash.
The other, small, issue I have is the drivers side light has a rough edge on it. It gritty and appears white. You can see this in the last two pictures.

I'd say it a lack of quality, but I know even some of the OEM tails had the same issue. Maybe I'll try to fix it with a bead of silicone first before resorting to a return.

Question About the Harness

I just completed this mod. Thanks to the info and part#s posted by N2GLOCK the switch-over was easy. If you order the parts you have listed the rest is P&P, the 2014 harness will replace the 2010 sockets and you can reuse your 2010 bulbs (you don't need the brake bulb as that is now LED). In the pic below I have the 2010 sockets on the left for ref. I ordered my parts from Mid Atlantic Toyota parts as they ship to Canada.
Hope this clears-up any remaining questions.

Can anyone confirm if the reverse light socket from the 2014+ harness will still fit in the 2010-2013 lights, I want to modify this harness for a VLED install.

Well, I answered my own question. I wanted to do a VLED install into my 2010-2013 and did determine the a minor modification was needed to use the 2014 and up harness for the reverse lights. I modified the other plugs for the VLED lights. Made a much cleaner install than soldering to the twist plugs of the 2010-2013. Will do a write up when I can finally start a new topic.

Been meaning to do this upgrade for awhile now but price was crazy. Now sounds reasonable.
 
Finished installing the 2014+ LED taillights today. I'm very happy with the upgrade. Wish I did it a long time ago.

TYC part numbers- direct plug and play

So here are the TYC part numbers for the direct swap. The most important numbers here are the -00- which signifies that no harness is necessary and it is a plug and play conversion. I love my 2014+ tail light swap. LEDS in the reverse and turn signals would be great. That may be the next thing I do since I'm almost all LEDs around the truck.
