2014 Side Mirror Bulb Access

Long time lurker, but this is my first post!

I recently notice the puddle lights on my 2015 Trail Edition aren't working. I actually can't remember if they ever worked (I bought it a few years ago used). The turn signals and heated glass work fine. I assumed the stock bulbs went, so I installed an LED in the driver side. Still nothing. They are supposed to come on when you unlock with the key fob, right? Is there a setting in the truck somewhere I can check? Or possibly a fuse? Winter is coming and I want all the light I can get?

Here we go- it was actually way easier than I thought!

Step 1: remove back cover of mirror assembly. I marked the area with a red dot where you should start. Pull back and up with a slight pressure and the cover will pop right off. The tabs are strong, so dont worry about breaking them. Just be careful not to let it go flying and scratch up your paint.

Step 2: that yellow wire leads to the puddle lamp. Remove the 2 screws from lower cover assembly. Next you need to pry off the lower cover. It's attached at several points, so the way I did it was wiggle it free on the right, then middle and then left and it came off pretty easily.

Step 3: Twist the light socket from the lens assembly to reveal the old bulb and replace with your fancy new LED.

Reverse the process, reassemble and boom, LED puddle lamps.

Side note- taking this thing apart really explains all of the wind noise these things make while driving. There are no real seals or gaskets, so they just whistle dixie.

resurrecting an old thread: been trying this all afternoon and I can't get these outer, painted shells to budge. On youtube I saw a guy pinch with two fingers and the thing comes right off.

*anyone whose were on tight, have luck with plastic pry tools?

Just had both sides off to install power folding mirrors - yes they can be on there good and I had to use plastic tools, no way was I getting it off with fingers alone eyebrows

Update: gently used the plastic pry bar, slowly working all the edges. Broke at least one clip so far. ugh

I was able to get it off the ROBSCOOL way. You have to have clean fingers that grip the plastic well (or maybe put on some snug grippy rubber gloves). Use two hands, two or three fingers of each hand to grip the pointed edge close to the window. Pull back and up in a controlled manner. It would probably help if everything was warm. Maybe use a hair dryer to heat it up. The other method is to pop off the mirror. That way seemed too dangerous to me.

garage was about 60 degrees, got out the hair dryer and warmed it up a bit after I broke 1 clip on the first headlight.

Second headlight - exact same clip (innermost) broke as well. Just a heads up for those doing this in the future.

Just a quick FYI for anyone who has aftermarket side view mirrors- removing the bulb housing is MUCH easier than on the OEM! You don’t have to dicker around with screws inside the mirror housing, they use a push tab inside and they pop right out

I was getting ready to put LEDs in mine when they were stolen and ended up putting them in the replacements before I installed them instead…
