2015-2016 Season Ski/Snowboard Thread!

Finally that time of year again! Ill be heading to Mt. Baker for their opening day tomorrow, 37" base/60"+ summit. I was tempted to hit up Mammoth on my way up to the PNW but I don't think an overloaded moving truck would have fared too well.

Who else is making turns in the early season?

I've been skiing A basin and skinning backcountry for almost a month now. My brother has skied all over Vail and Beaver Creek already and the conditions are all-time for early season. 42" at PHQ and deep faceshots the whole way down. Git sum!

With all the new snow the CAIC posts us at 'considerable' avy danger at and above treeline, so if you go backcountry be prepared. Early season doesnt mean its automatically safe.

Baker was awesome, best skiing Ive had in years. Conditions were perfect (for opening), sunny in the 30's. Thanksgiving weekend has the same weather forecast so Ill be going back on black friday, they should get some more snow between now and then.

I guess were the only 2 skiing? :shocked:

Shoot, more for me and you!

Man that looks like some awesome terrain. Never been skiing up there but I've heard its steep! Probably a little more challenging with a wet coastal snowpack. Little more stable though I imagine.

Vail had a pretty ridiculous opening day/weekend. We managed to be one of the first chairs to get to Northwoods for some pretty epic knee deep untracked goodness. 1,100 acres, biggest opening in ten years and only the second time I've been able to ski trees opening day! Definitely some snags to watch out for but damn was it good. We opened and closed the mountain, almost needed a wheelchair by the time I got back to the truck.

First and foremost, I resent every one of you out West..... I'm going to Park City in February and already counting down the days.

For everyone in Wisconsin,

If you're planning on getting on a "mountain," you should definitely check out Skiing Wisconsin Coupon Book 2015 - $130 gets you 1 day lift tickets for 16 different resorts in the state, 5-6 of them within about an hour's drive of Milwaukee. There's a couple really small places, but it's a pretty great deal overall.

If you went to Devil's Head, Cascade, and Alpine Valley (or) Wilmot it would pay for itself, and you have the option of a bunch of other places. Personally I'm planning on hitting as many of these places that I can, but even if you only make it out a few times it may be worth the price. Keystone opened up early last week so we went for a few hours, it was interesting try to re-teach myself how to board. I have a season pass at Ski Cooper, but they don't open till Dec 12th

 
Sunday I went to Eldora for my first runs of the year, it's close to home so it works for a couple hours on the slopes on being home for lunch. I got 10 runs and 9.8K of vertical in. Conditions wee actually pretty good.

I'll be heading up for a couple hours tomorrow morning as well. I'm so excited for ski season. I have new skis and bindings waiting for a deeper base to take out and some new gloves coming in the mail.
 
I will be skiing in Bromont, QC in Canada. We had the first official snow fall in the town yesterday but I hope they open soon for some good snow.

Black Friday @ Baker was awesome aside from minor traffic on 542, seriously debating using my last few days before going back to work to get in as much as I can during the week before the holiday rush starts.
 
We got 12" of fresh at Baker today, was a great time. I think I'll need to change my tack for this type of powder. Wetted out both pairs of gloves, and both my hats, and my long skinny K2's are about the worst thing I think I can use here. Rossi Sin 7's here I come. Not too many pics, was basically whiteout conditions once you lifted up from the base. Looking to hit it hard mid week next week!

I recently ordered some gloves that showed up the other day. I always have cold fingers so I finally spent the money on a truly high end nice pair of Hestra Heli 3-Fingers.
I got to try them out Saturday while it was 20 degrees out with a little wind and it was snowing. My fingers weren't warm but at no point were they cold. I really like them
a lot. That day I got in 21 chairs up and 25,700 feet of vertical down at Copper and I was still back in the car headed home by 12:30.

Those Hestra's are serious! I looked at some this weekend as I also bought mitts. After trying on everything I could find in every outdoor shop in Seattle I bought NF Montana Mitts. They were highly reviewed on outdoor gear lab and the price was right.
 
I'm actually kind of surprised people spend so much money on gloves. The best gloves you can buy are full grain leather work gloves or mitts with Thinsulate insulation at your local hardware store- $30 bucks on the high end. Coat those suckers in SnoSeal and you are golden in all winter conditions. Totally waterproof and much more durable than fabric gloves. I've gone through gloves made by just about every ski company out there and none of them come close to the work gloves. Unless you buy the down filled arctic mitts they pretty much all use minimal insulation that usually clumps up with moisture from your hands, and the fabric ones will always get wet from the outside and just end up making you colder.

You guys don't have a glove problem- its a core insulation problem. If your core temp drops below 98.6 your circulatory system responds by restricting blood flow to extremities to keep your vital organs nice and toasty. So it really doesn't matter what gloves you have on, your fingers will continue to be cold because of the lack of blood flow.

Spend the money on a down puffy midlayer to minimize heat loss from your core. Unless the temp drops below 20 I usually don't even wear my gloves.
 
Today is going to be a good day. 20" since Wednesday and another 6-12" today! Gotta fuel the machine...

We got some new snow this weekend, 4-5 inches most places but we found a few shin deep stashes at Mary Jane.
