then why claim the opposite? or support the opposite?
Because in this thread about flexing hoods, it is relevant to point out that the hoods of older vehicles tended to be thicker, heavier, and sturdier (look at the video you so kindly linked; the hood on the '59 was so inflexible it broke free from the latch rather than crumple like a tin can of the new Impala.)
What bearing it has on the safety in an impact has no bearing what so ever on this discussion besides small comment made to the OP by someone outside the forum that he had trouble believing. While pointing out that older hoods were much more rigid and inflexible (again crash safety is
NOT a component of this discussion nor was it ever implied that older cars are safer, merely that components on them tended to be heavier, sturdier, and more rigid compared to newer components which some are designed to crumple) I also mentioned in passing why that outside person's comment holds weight. I also mentioned that
weight reduction is a key design criteria for modern cars that have become laden with a ton of crap.
Somewhere along those ideas you clung to the idea that I was using "Heavy & Sturdy" were in some fashion
directly tied to vehicle safety, which I have admitted multiple times it is
not. You also seemed to think that weight reduction done during the design phase of a vehicle is somehow related to the finalized vehicle being "lighter" than older vehicles. This entire thread has been about 1 singular component flexing under driving conditions; aside from an abstract segue on how many other
non-safety critical components have been lightened and designed to not be as needlessly heavy as older vehicles I have focused mainly on the above points; until you seemingly misinterpreted my text (at this point I don't know if its intentional or if you're just having a hard time stepping back from the situation to see what everyone else is agreeing on here) and decided that I was in the wrong.
I'm not in the business of shaming people, attacking people, or being an ass on this forum typically. Most every post I make is directed to providing information (sometimes more than what most people probably want to know; again blame the Asperger's for that one...) to members as they ask. I also apologize if you somehow took anything I said as a personal attack or some sort of tirade against you, I try not to come off as being angry or rude on the forum as much as possible.
Post Note-
I'm far younger than that old codger 1engineer (couldn't resist lol) and while I'd love to say I'm an old fogey who's been through the mill more than once... I'm probably on the younger side than most members on this forum (not a fan of Posi-Trac either.)
Who has done that? Every post in this thread has supported your stated position, which is incidentally, the same as BWI's. I almost feel like I'm arguing with a spam bot
At least I am not the only one.
