Jesus people, let's get this straight, ok?
ALL 5TH GEN BRAKES ARE EXACTLY THE SAME. EVERY ONE EVER BUILT HAS EXACTLY THE SAME PADS, ROTORS, ETC.
EVERY ONE. SAME.

I think I understand what your saying about the brakes. Yesterday the light went red (red light camera...must stop) quickly applied the brakes and the rear tires actually locked up and skidded. Hello ABS you should have worked.
So I agree with you there seems to be a lack of gradually grab that ever other vehicle I've owned or driven has had. If you search you will find a couple other threads talking about the brakes.
And of course you need to weed out callus remarks.

i highly doubt i suck at driving, 15 years road racing experience, pocono lime rock park watkins glen road atlanta daytona and njmp...doing time trials, hpde and such...

Exactly this. I've locked up the rear brakes in my 5th Gen on more than one occasion. There is a "no bite, no bite, no bite, BITE" characteristic to them. It has also started to creep at red lights on me too. I've been driving for a long time, owned tons of cars, trucks, SUV's, motorcycles. This is my 9th 4Runner. I'm not a fan of the brakes on this thing. But they're nothing I can't get used to.
No one said you suck at racing. There is a lot more to driving than just racing, for example learning to adapt your style/skills for the road and traffic conditions present & the non racing vehicle being driven.

the brakes have no initial grab, low coe pads maybe? then it transitions to panic stop mode and no i am not tailgating or speeding or driving like an idiot as some of you seem to think, i drive this fairly calmly as its my child transport also, not that i don't drove spirited when he's in the evo either. For a 4 piston system it has horrible feel, no initial grab and its absolutly vague.
trust me i know brakes, think 170-180 in a mazda kudzu or gt3 porsche into turn one at daytona...you need them to make that turn at that speed. I'm sure most of you have never done that or even that speed...
as for the nosedive thats a suspension issue and related to the rake that the truck came so gloriously with...

You know, you are like the 50th guy to come here and tout your racing pedigree and complain about something wrong with the 4Runner. Unless you race F1 or IndyCar or Prototype then you are just a poor slob like the rest of us with an expensive hobby. Face it, if you almost hit someone in the ass you were too close to them.
Those of you complaining about barely pressing the pedal and activating brake assist: It's the speed of actuation not the force of actuation that activates it. Slow it down a bit and it acts like normal brakes. Panic and hit it fast and your whole world stops.
Edit: OP after reading your last post it sounds like you are hitting the brake too fast. Try going down the street and hitting the brakes with a slower steady pressure. Now do the same only tap them really quick like a panic stop. You will feel a huge difference.

Honestly, I will say that people feel they need to defend the love for 4runners like a Ford vs Chevy arguments. Let's be honest here the brake are ok but the pedal modulation sucks.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume most of the "I love my 4Runners" guys are young and haven't driven a vehicle with well tuned brakes.
I will also say that I disagree with the comment that upgrading your pads and rotors will effect the factory ABS is not trues as I've upgraded plenty of vehicle and never had an issue. I upgraded the brakes on my Camaro to 6 piston Brembo in front and 4 piston in the rear with 15" rotors and they work significantly better. Now you can order the kit right out of the GM performance catalog.
