2015 trade in value?

Whatever someone will give you for it. It varies from region to region. I'll never forget some sage advise from a friend of ours who is a sales manager. "Sure I can give you more on your trade, I'll just add it I to the price of the new car...do you still want more for your trade?" Can you sell it outright rather than trade?

I can't imagine there have been very many at this point. But there was a guy who had a 2014, I think it was, and traded it in because he ended up getting a large RV trailer and needed a full-size truck for towing. I can't remember what his username was, but if you search the 5th gen section for Tundra with towing or rv, or something you could probably find the thread.

I was told from a sale guy a while ago... go onto KBB, look at Trade-In...Fair...

You'll take a killing.. always better to try sell it private party..

When I bought mine I wasn't even considering trading in my old Audi because it was practically worthless since it needed a new clutch. The guy says "Why not just let us take a look?". I say Ok fine. The result.... $853 (KBB was probably $3k with a good clutch). Eventually they said we'll give you $1500 on the trade if it gets the deal done. I still said no. Eventually I took out the turbo, intercooler, stereo, and a bunch of other stuff and sold the car to a junkyard for $850. I've made about $1800 selling the parts I took off so far, and I still have about $700 worth of stuff to sell.

So yea, I vote private party all the way.

This sounds like something I would have done in my younger days. The thrill and fun of all the work is long gone for me. For the little extra money I would rather just get the old vehicle out of my life and not look back.

You will take a pretty big hit. We're looking at trading in my wife's year old Camry for a new Tacoma and it's a pretty significant drop, we'll probably just wait.

Camarys are toyota's bread and butter. So common that they drop in value. 4runners aren't quite as common. Will still take a hit, but not as much as with a camary.

So, why would you trade in a vehicle for almost an identical vehicle? You must be upside on vehicles all the time.

Trading it sometimes make sense. If there's something wrong with the vehicle I feel bad selling it to a private party. I go to the dealership, haggle a good trade in value, haggle a good purchase price, and I can usually make it out about the same as a private party sale when you factor in your sales tax credit (which most people don't factor in). Ya, you could sell it to a private party for $2k-$3k more, but your sales tax credit will likely be around the same. It varies on your state/city sales tax rate. Some places are around 10%, which starts to make a trade-in more and more appealing.

Some people have more money than others and loosing $5k is not an issue at all. I wish I was one of those people. For others there rich Dad buys them whatever they want. If someone wants to throw their money away why should be care?

also you have to take into account the tax break you get with a trade in.

trading in a 2012 Tacoma with 22k miles for 26.5, add in the tax savings of $1400 and I am right back in the ball park of selling it myself and dealing with the hassle that I can save myself and have the dealer do it for me.

so it comes down to, trying for several days/weeks of selling it myself and make $500 more or let the dealer deal with something they do everyday and be done with the whole transaction in 2-3 hours instead of wasting my time and taking off work or late in the evening to show every person the truck to sell.

Yea 03.

But no one should be financing a depreciating asset. Just plain stupid. Pay cash. Then you're not worried about a trade in amount. Sell outright for what you what or are willing to take.

a few issues with that

1. paying cash outright for a big ticket item actually hurts you in the long run (think credit score/history)

2. if you can get it for 0%/60m loan, put the money to better use (not like your wasting money on interest)

this is not true in every situation, if you have a bad credit score, maybe you can increase it by paying on a loan, BUT you will be paying interest (and probably a lot of it with a bad credit score that you just got the loan with). If you already have great credit, paying cash doesn't hurt you one bit, you still have that credit card (or two or three LOL) in your pocket to go and utilize (responsibly) to grow your credit score...

agreed, but likely one already has to have a good credit score to get this.

my 2cents, this person sounds young and/or a bit inexperienced. to trade a 2015 on a 2016? where nothing major changed? :loco:

but hey if you want to throw money down the drain on a trade. more power to you, its your money and your life and ultimately your choice! :peace:

As little as possible. And they will be turned around and be sold for as much as possible. Welcome to car dealer economics 101.
traded in my 2015 Tacoma double cab Off Road 4x4...paid $32k. got $30k trade in. It's now back on the lot at more than MSRP. Dealer Economics.

You are correct on the tax break. That is why I traded in my 03 4runner and my 2011 Avalon on my current 4runner. I felt the dealer gave my fair value for my trade ins and with the tax break it was a no brainer. It did not cost much to have my new 4runner but I only have one vehicle now which is fine with me.

I did the Auto Trader thing once. The guy comes to my house to buy it. He comes with his buddy, and I have the wife and kids asleep in the house. They could have jumped me, raped my wife and killed my kids.

Actually everything went fine, he paid in $100 bills and they were all good. But never again.

Set it up at a bank or some other place, do NOT do it in your house.

Oh - second mistake I made, I left the plates on the vehicle. A co-worker sold a Grand Cherokee to a used car lot, he gets a bill in the mail from the tollway with a picture of his GC going thru the gates and not paying. I had no issues with my plates.
