I have a 2016 4Runner SR5 4WD with 13k miles on it. I have a moan/grind vibration coming from the floor when decelerating from 45-30mph. It seems to be worse in colder temps but it does not do this when in 4WD. My dealership felt the issue but did not know what it was, they were thinking it could be a bearing in the transfer case. They called the Toyota FTS and after waiting over a month the guy comes out and says its "characteristic" of 5th gens and no repair necessary. I had a 2013 that never did this and I have test driven several other 2016 models and did not feel this vibration. So needless to say the dealership is siding now with Toyota and basically telling me to go pound sand. Anyone experienced this issue? Any Toyota techs know the fix?

I have a rumble at 30mph, mainly during deceleration that began after I started using 4wd some (never happened until I went offroad the first time). I was also wondering if it was transfer case related. I told dealership at my 5k service (about 6200 miles now) but at the time I hadn't figure out yet how to reproduce it so they didn't see it.
I thought mine was maybe tires. It's definitely not brake related, I can come off the brakes and it doesn't stop (well not immediately, it will stop when i'm not close to 30mph).

Unfortunately it is a flaw in the design (explained in the video). A great solution is to replace the carrier with an ARB Locker LOL..
There is a cheaper solution also... The bushing described in part 2 of the video has solved it for many people.

Most dealers will replace the front diff if the noise is bad. Just had a friend with a tacoma get his done and they did both CVs at the same time. The noise went away, but it will eventually come back. The ECGS bushing does seem to mostly resolve it. It's just a noise though... they seem to keep going forever with it....
calling it a "characteristic" is disappointing crappy customer service. Some people do get lucky with a clean casting, but many of them are sloppy from the factory and it seems to get worse.

@wfo9, does the sound mean that there is excessive wear in the front diff, will it have a shortened life? Mine isn't that bad yet, so if it doesn't get worse I'm not particularly concerned about it unless it means my front diff won't last. If it means my diff is wearing out I definitely want to push hard to get the dealer to fix it.
Good to know that front lockers will fix the problem, I'm going to keep that card in my pocket so i have a good excuse in the future to justify to the wife why I need front locker

Can't say for sure. If there is a vibration... I would push for a new diff and CV. Just a noise... probably no big deal.
If out of warranty. I would throw the extended bushing in that ECGS sells. Toyota should have done something about this by now.

I would drop the drive shaft check the U joints for binding. also the axle may be out of balance. check the bearings at this time.

Experiencing the same noise and vibrations in my 2016 SR5 4WD. Bought it with 11k on it a month ago and over the last 2 weeks I have been noticing the grinding noise mainly in the mornings, but the vibrations throughout the day. I am taking it to the dealer tomorrow to have them "investigate". Everything is still under factory warranty so we'll see what they say.

Be sure you ride along, it does wonders for the tech's hearing.
You'd be smart to park it there overnight so it's cold for the test drive.

I have a 2016 4Runner TE with about 12,000 miles. About a month ago, I started to hear a humming noise from the front end that sounds like a bad wheel barring. Today, on my way to work, I put it in 4H when I was going about 15 MPH and it did not engage. When I stopped, I tried again and it engaged. When I drove in 4WD for about 1 mile the humming and slight vibration I was experiencing stopped. When I put it back to 2H, there was no humming either, however, when I got off work about 9 hours later the humming returned. I have a dealer service appointment set up for Monday and am not sure what to expect.
I started a thread on this same topic today. Mine went to the dealer this morning and it is spending the night.

Forgot to check back in but didn't have any update. Of course they couldn't replicate the noise that time, but luckily this afternoon I saw the post about the TSB so I stopped by the dealership on the way home. Took the service guy for a ride and he heard it right away without me having to point it out. Dropping it off Sunday night so he can work on it first thing Monday.
Funny thing is, he has a 2015 and it makes almost the same noise. He has no idea there was a TSB out.
It was making the noise in H4 also when we took the test drive. Hopefully by Wednesday I'll be able to post an update that all is well.

I am having the same problem on 2016 SR5, I have 14K miles but noticed around 12K. I alerted the dealer at my last service call and they said they could not replicate. it was 60 degrees out so the vibration was very little. It was 20 degrees yesterday and the vibration was there all the way to 75 MPH.
I also noticed that when in 4WD-H the wheels seem to jump when cornering slowly, not sure if there is a relation. I do not engage 4WD much.

I would take the sucker back to the dealer under warranty...with the information you obtained off this great site!! You should not have to put a minute of time into fixing anything!!
Going thru same problem with a 2016 4Runner Trail. First dealership replaced rear carrier assembly, no joy. Took the it to another dealer and they called Toyota Engineering who told tech to put it on the hoist and look for scoring on the front drive shaft. There was damage from scoring, Toyota advised dealership to replace front carrier and driveshaft. Parts are back ordered. It is a known problem not only with the 4Runners but the Tundras as well.

Having the same issue, 2017 with 15k on it. They are currently in the process of replacing my front diff under warranty but they are not confident it is going to fix the problem. I am regretting my decision of purchasing the vehicle. Anyone else have the repair done?

I have a 2016 and no vibes or 4wd issues .. very smooth ..
most of the forum members will not post back how the vehicle was fixed .. so the thread goes on for years ...
post back how the dealership treated you and what they did and found.. that is helpful for many ..

Did you have the repair done and what is the result? I also have a 2017 with <7,000 miles on it and recently noticed this vibration/rumble. Mine is a repetitive hum-hum-hum-hum that is most noticeable at 35-40 mph that seems to speed up and slow down with mph. I think the issue in this thread may be mine. I have plans to take mine to the dealer too. I'm interested to know the status of your repair, and what the problem and the solution were. Thanks!
