2017 College Football Thread

He is from Florida and did coach at South Florida but to leave after a year I don’t understand. I guess if it’s your dream job you take it no matter what line of work you are in. I’m more loyal to my employer than some too.

Sports is a different animal. Being loyal to employer is a good story and all but they are always looking a cheaper way to get things done. As the employee, you owe it to yourself to be in the best position possible. College sports is no exception. It wasn't like this 15 years ago. The job market has changed drastically. Loyalty won't take you as far as it use to.

I agree with most of what you are saying but there are exceptions to every rule. I have been rewarded nicely a handful of times by sticking around. My company is great about promoting from within. As the company grows and things change I don’t know if this will be the case only time will tell. It does feel good to be able to say I have been somewhere as long as I have. The days of retiring from a place you started at when you were 18 are definitely over but why jump ship when things are good

I definitely understand the loyalty angle, but in that business opportunities only arise every so often. You have to jump on them.

The exceptions grow less and less as every day goes by. Your story, while ideal, isn't the norm in today's job market. Now, you have to individually find your promotion. And more times than not, it is with a different company(ies).

Well I think the loyalty to a program has changed so much over the past 10-15 years. More money is being thrown around to coaches and fans are more inpatient wanting championships these days. The days of having the Paterno, Bowden, Bryant type coaches staying at one university for 30+ years is over. It is funny to think in the SEC the longest tenured coach in that conference is Nick Saban who has been at Alabama since 2007. Did you know the state of Florida has 7 FBS schools UF, Miami, FSU, FIU, FAU, UCF and USF and Marck Richt is the longest tenured coach at Miami and he has only been there since 2016. I guess Taggart decided to take his dream job plus more $$$. IMO I don't see this being a home run hire for FSU. Yeah he was 7-5 at Oregon but he did absolutely nothing at USF.

I agree the 30+ year days are gone and in Patero’s case that might be for the best. He was there so long and had such great success he not only ran the football program he wound up running the whole University and town of State College so the Sandusky abuse was allowed to go on for years because Joe Pa kept silent.

Not that guys making that kind of money worry about home equity but in my mind I’m sitting here going if he bought a house he didn’t have time for it to gain any equity. Maybe he sells it at a loss and writes it off I’m no tax lawyer or accountant.

We also don’t know how he felt about where he was at, at Oregon he and the AD and donors could have butted heads behind closed doors. He may not have cared for the kids he coached or even liked where he lived. I’ll be the first to tell you I don’t care much for where I live but because of positives from my job and some things with my family I’m a bit stuck here

Any of those things could have made him want to leave at the first decent job to come his way. He just lucked out and it was his dream job that came calling.

And that's why you can't compare big time sports with us everyday people ha. Things that we would consider, don't even cross the minds of these coaches/players. Would not surprise me if Coach Taggart got relocation comp. from FSU. Money ain't an issue to these big schools.

Money wise yes your correct but I still think a person should be loyal to an extent but again like I said also we don’t know what was going through his head he may have hated Oregon. He might have left for Boston College for $200K and a box of thin mints he hates Oregon so bad. Maybe that kind of money distorts your thinking. I guess my way of thinking is too old school but bailing after one season doesn’t say much to me for his character

I’ll also say this then I’m done we can agree to disagree if need be.
I tell the people under my supervision at work I’ll never be upset if you leave to go better your self but if you go make a lateral move or chase .25 cents an hour more down the street then I won’t think real highly of what your doing.

I had a great employee leave me this summer he was starting a new career starting out $7 more an hour and long term over decades what he was getting into would be much much more income. I was sad I lost this young man but very happy for him and his new wife. Shortly after that I had a kid leave me that had only been with me a short time take off no notice for just pennies more an hour and he has to be out in the elements year round. If he would have stuck with me 90 days I would have had what he left for more than beat and had heat and A/C. I just shook my head and said bye

All that said yes FSU has a recent National Championship but I still don’t think FSU is that much better of a job today than Oregon is.

So define "loyalty." He easily could've been fired after one season and no one would call out UO for being "disloyal." Should he stay for his whole contract and miss out on advancement? The window of opportunity is smaller than anyone can think. If you have someone giving you more bread at the table, you take it. Just like if you were willing to work for less: no employer is going to turn that down.

If they fired him for going 7-5 or better with no wrongful conduct then I would call them out. If he won 2 games and they canned him then yeah go for it or if he went 7-5 and got caught in a hotel with 2 16 year old girls and a kilo of coke then I’m good with them sending him down the road.

Money doesn’t make the world go around for everyone. Would I like to make more? Of course but I’m not going to base every decision in life over a small raise.
I know coach Taggart s raise wasnt small but I think you know what I mean

No doubt. A small raise isn't for everyone. If you are comfortable staying in one place: more power to you. But loyalty is a one-way street these days. Financial news will tell you that all the time. You do what is best for you and your family. You don't pass up this opportunity if you're looking to advance. You want people to stay, employers need to give incentives to do so (within reason of course). If not, you can't expect anyone to be "loyal."

So, if that's the case wouldn't you choose the job that's closer to your friends and family? And on top of that, in an area you are more comfortable (and have more ties to) with recruiting.

Not necessarily everyone is different

4 years ago I tuned down a free home a nice one at that to move back to the town I grew up in. I said thanks but no thanks. The negatives out weighed the good especially when it came to education and activities for my kids and the job market in that town is a constant struggle. Plus at the end of the day my self and my wife would not be happy there. The only positive would have been I’d be a little closer to my parents and a paid for house which sadly in a town with a crappy job market you’d have to have a paid for house.

If coach Taggert is truly happy back in Florida than I’m happy for him but home sweet home isn’t always sweet for everyone

Completely agree with that sentiment. So let me ask it in a different way. If you had an opportunity to move jobs (and a move that is more lateral than anything) to a job that's in a location that would make not only you happier, but your family as well, would you?

Absolutely and I see what you are gettin at but That’s why I threw in the hates Oregon clause for coach Taggert. OKC has been good to me as far as my job but I’m also not much of a fan of the town. Yes it’s better than the meth infested dump of a town I grew up in but it’s not my favorite place on earth either.

I like hills and trees and colder weather so yeah I’d love to move. Including a large area to the east of you. I’d also love to live in Eastern Kentucky. I’d prefer to make a lateral within the company. If it got to a point where I had to change companies I’d do it but I also wouldn’t bail on any company that made a big investment in me after a short period of time unless I was truly miserable where I was at.

Why would you want to live in Eastern Kentucky?? My wife is from that area and I would never live there.
