I may be one you hate. Why not FJ60? $15k restoration...you sure it will run reliably or will it continue to be money pit as do most restoration projects become? But beyond that, i prefer the luxury AND safety that a new Land Cruiser afford. If I wanted just capability, then i can just buy a Wrangler Rubicon and dominate the off-road.

The idea with the Land Cruiser is that it combines luxury, off-road capability, safety, and top notch reliability.

Sure, it is expensive...but why do you hate on those that have the means to own one? That’s petty dude. Let others spend their hard earned money on whatever they want...why do you care?

Kinda depends on what is a fair comparitor. There's really nothing out there that's in the luxury market of offroading. Land Rovers are all unibody crossover cars now. The GM BOF SUVs don't even come with a 2 speed transfer case in most models anymore and they've all but given up on any sort of offroad use. Who else is left? I genuinely can't think of any.

The LC200 has running gear that's not too far off from a 3/4ton truck. The front wheel bearings are bigger than an F250. The rear axle isn't though. But it's basically similar to a Dana 60. You get suspension articulation that's second only to a Wrangler Rubicon with sway bar disconnect. RTI is better than a Raptor.

And it's built like a tank. It weighs more than a Raptor. Every thing is heavier than other vehicles. The windows are thicker. The exhaust is double the thickness of a 4Runner. It's simply built to a different standard.

It's won the Baja 1000 3 times IIRC and been 2nd place twice. Including 2018.

Is it a good deal? Probably not for most of the people who buy them. But is it a terrible deal? I'm not sure. It depends on what you're comparing it to - which is hard because there's nothing else out there that's in the same market space.

It would be great to get a stripped down version like you can buy overseas. The GX model in Australia starts at about $50k adjusted for tax. (Pricing conversion is tricky because their prices include tax ours don't). And it comes with a twin turbo v8 diesel. If that were offered here, I'd be driving one already.

Don't get me wrong, I can afford it...I guess I just don't see the tipping point where money overtakes common sense frivolity...maybe it's just because I'm not Crazy Rich Asians level rich yet haha. Although tbh, maybe it's just age too. I can't picture going from (upgrade riddled, affordable, purpose-built, 4Runner) to (mostly-unbuildable, overpriced, questionably-purposed LC). However, I'm sure there gets a point where you just want to buy something moderately capable from the factory and call it a day. I do love the G-Wagon ever since I worked at Benz out of highschool and drove one of the first AMGs they made. But for me, that's money well spent because you're getting ALL that engine and interior, doors that close like a tank hatch, the quality oozes out of it for the price..the LC, meh, reminds me of a Gen4 Sequoia.

Gen 4 Sequoia? There’s been just 2 generations.

I owned G500. Quality...meh. I was not impress to be honest. I had several issues.

Haha doh, I was applying 4Runner gens to the Sequoia..sorry 1st gen.
Was it typical Benz electrical issues jw? I know the first 10ish years or so of gasoline (US spec) Gs were hit or miss and still pretty rough riding but capable.
 
I think you're selling the LC short by comparing it the Sequoia (regardless of the Gen) ha. There is a reason why I can go on Craigslist and find J80s selling for for $5K-$6K with +200K miles on the ODO. They are built for the long haul. As mentioned, Toyota has made the perfect vehicle when it comes to luxury, ruggedness, utility and reliability. Toyota vehicles are more expensive upfront but seem to be worth it if you can keep them for the long haul. The LC is the epitome.

Window regulators from hell!! Navigation system problem. And the last one made me depress...engine mount failure. I did off-road with it...but engine mount failure is just unacceptable for a “military” vehicle. It became expensive to service it...then you add in issues. I do miss it though.
 
Hmmm, someone in my neighborhood is thinking of selling his 2016 Lexus LX 570 (with all options).......only has 15k miles. He is asking $70k. Hmmmmmmm

WOWWW engine mount failure?? That IS crazy for a "military" spec vehicle, or really any self-respecting SUV for that matter. Sorry to hear! I know a guy that just picked up the new one in Oak Grune..my all time personal favorite Porsche/Benz color..but the color would leave a TON to be desired with all those extra problems which does make sense in the Toyota-Benz comparison.

I actually like the Sequoia as far as capable, up-gradable SUVs goes, a bit like an off-road bus haha if you're bringing everyone and everything! ..I guess I just don't see too much difference going from there up to the $86k base LC. As you mentioned there are a ton used out there still holding a strong value. I can see your point though, $86k for a 300k mile capable SUV that'll still be worth something in 20years, with very little known maintenance/reliabilty issues, in absolutely anything else would be unheard of. I drove an 08' that had a 100k more miles than my 13' SR5 when I got it at the same price out the door, I still think there's just something about those old beasty J80s with a big set of 35's tho that makes them unstoppable..but who knows, maybe I just need to drive a newer LC to appreciate the newer model. Imo for $86k tho your basically getting 90% 4Runner with the Sequoia v8, even the interior in my opinion is where the 4Runner SHOULD be by now.. KDSS, Crawl Control, analog gauges, JBL system, a 2nd row that doesn't fold flat, fake plastic wood but overall a cleaner "nicer" finish..although still missing new safety features that you'd find in a Tahoe like the lane departure seat vibration alert, reverse mirrors that tilt down for parking (still one of my favorite Ford features)..it still just feels like SO much more money, for very few upgrades (V8 aside, cause let's be honest it should've been a 4Runner option 10 years ago in the Gen5).
 
I love it for $60-70k, but for $85-100k it's missing some features for me. Otherwise it is a great truck, you can't beat Toyota reliability.
 
I hear you. For me, it would be worth it brand new. A vehicle meant to last 25+ years has all the essentials that fall into the "ageless" category. Technology changes at fairly high clip over time but core vehicle features haven't been on that same feverish pace. I think the Land Cruiser gives an owner more than enough for its intended life cycle.
 
Only if I had money to burn.

For that money I am pretty sure I could import a 70 series full optioned 4.5 turbo V8 diesel and 4wd manual trans.

I love this post.

Toyota Land cruiser is one of the most popular models in Nigeria. The car is used by the elites and the middle class.

The bulletproof version of it is very awesome. The engine is very good for drivers who love speed.

Land cruiser is one of my most favorite models after Toyota Tundra.
