2020 model issues/observations

No car manufacturers aside from BMW/Mini and Audi currently have wireless carplay. No manufacturer has wireless Android Auto.

Try deleting your phone from the car, the car from the phone, reboot your car and re-pair.

Proclipusa.com sells some nice mounts for your phone.

I’m coming from a Jeep Rubicon. My biggest resistance to buying a 4R was no way to mount the phone. I had a great mount and spot in the Jeep. So I found an awesome solution that has no movement like the Jeep mount and the company is located in Dallas.

The company is called 67 Designs. What you will need is their suction cup, small to medium arm and universal mount. You can move it anywhere. I had a small arm for my JK mount so I use that. A medium arm would be a little over an inch longer and that would probably be better. I might try one because it would clear the dash a little more and make it slightly easier to reach. I settled on slightly closer to drivers side and it allows me to still plug in my phone when I want to the left of center dash. Coolest part is the arm is “carbon fiber”. Matches the center console.

My Jeep was infinitely better for interior storage and mods. The TRD Pro is infinitely better on road. I have also found a great company doing seat covers for Jeeps venturing into 4R’s. It will be a gamechanger for sure.

I settled on mounting it a few inches to left of this pic. Here is my setup:

Suction Cup Base – 67 Designs

Carbon Fiber Arms (Polished) – 67 Designs

2020 SR5 Premium here.

I've had the Carplay calling issue, it only happened after I setup the Wifi. I turned the wifi off hoping that would fix the issue, but haven't made any calls since.

Leaving the dealership the first thing I noticed was the lack of a daylight sensor to dim/brighten the dash. The Carplay looks great, but the screen is WAY too bright during the day.

I just installed the daylight sensor, found on ebay for $75: part number 89121-30020. This is not the 2020 4runner part, but it fits and works correctly. Huge quality of life upgrade.

Anyone want to sell me their front silver valence from a TRD OR?

Headlights are great compared to my 2000 4Runner limited OEM headlights...

Hey I have front and rear silver valences from a 2020 ORP for sale. PM me if still interested!

I now have 1200 miles on my 2020 TRD ORP. I love the truck. It's about the same size as my 80 series Land Cruiser, but with much more power and way more modern touches. Here are a few of my gripes:

1. The album art on SiriusXM stations shows up sporadically. I also wish the icon for each particular XM station was shown in the button created when I make it one of my presets. It makes it easy to select what I want to listen to (but at this point I have my presets memorized).

2. The headlights suck. We all know this.

3. The passenger seat is too tall. They should have made it just as adjustable as the driver's seat.

4. The screen brightness is not adaptive. I saw a post above about someone adding the sensor to fix that. Great idea!

5. Why didn't they put the compass in the mirror?

These are all minor gripes. I came from a 2009 Audi A4 Quattro Prestige that had way more bells and whistles than my 2020 4Runner, but it was not reliable. We all seem to understand the trade-offs.

Re: seat squeaking. My driver seat squeaked one day. I found out it was because I had it lowered down vertically all the way. Pumped it up a centimeter and the squeak stopped.

The brake squeak sucks. It's happening a lot in my climate this winter. Has been humid and about -10's C all winter (Winnipeg). I know people say to just live with it but I live downtown and it's embarassingly loud in my parkade and the parking lot at work. Chose the 4runner for something practical and dependable compared to the fancy German cars a lot of other people at work drive - don't hear any of those cars squeaking. I'll try the brake pumping!

I agree tho it's a small issue. I'm loving the truck overall. It's damn solid otherwise. I still will just drive in circles for fun or take the long way home to drive over bumpier streets. 3 months in and I'd definitely buy it all over again.

Funny, I didn't think about the seat being all the way down vertically and making the squeak. That is too how I have my seat set up so this makes sense.

It's weird that the brake squeak seems to be just the 2020s. Maybe Toyota just switched the OEM brakes installed to crappy ones, and once they start getting changed by 2020 owners, problem solved. Or it's the rotors, or calipers, and it will take us longer to find out/ get relief.

Not sure if something is wrong with my backup camera but the quality is horrible. I'm coming from a 16 pro and it is definitely worse quality. Is that normal?

They have the same camera and is garbage. Mine looks better mainly from the larger screen. Do other screens come up crisp and clear? Maybe display settings. Since you say it's worse than your 16 something is wrong. Test drive another will help determine

Ya maybe I just didn't realize how bad it was haha

I borrowed my buddy's Tesla for a week, and then jumped into this, so I'm probably just noticing how awful the Toyota camera is

FYI....The most recent Apple update on the iPhone 11 fixes all of the call issues we have been having. No need to go to the dealer just update the phones software. Ours had the issue, updated the phone and its working great now.

I wouldn't go so far as to tell others that they don't need the Toyota update. Most likely folks would benefit from both, the Toyota update and the iOS update.

Hello. I believe I read somewhere the other day that the 2020 screen does not dim at night and is really bright. Have been trying to search for it but can not find that post. Can someone please let me know if the screen is dimmable? Thanks!

It is. Interior light dimmer to the left of the steering wheel.

This is just my opinion so no one don’t take a offense to this. Lol. But I cannot believe how many complaints about the brakes and the headlights. I have been driving Toyota’s for years. I traded my 17 Pro in on my 2020 Pro. No brake squeals with 1500 hundred miles on it. I think the headlights are fine unless you want to spend 1300 for the upgraded ones aftermarket. I let my Pro sit in my garage for a week or sometimes 3 days and bring it out and no complaints. I Like the big screen for the Apple play. No issues.

with you. my family has had runners since 99 starting with 99 LTD, 10 LTD, 11 Trail, 19 TRDP, and now 20 TRDORP. no issues. lights are more of a personal preference and the breaks on squeal sometimes when its extreme cold... i mean -20degree Celsius. love the 20 airplay and the safety auto break- it works very very well.

Thanks! I haven't purchased yet but will be soon. So is the screen brightness not separate from the rest of the dash lights?

The screen brightness is attached to the same dial as the rest of the dash lights.

The confusion over it sounding like it doesn't dim comes from people (including me) not realizing that the vehicle comes with the dash/display locked to full brightness from the dealer. When in that position, it doesn't dim with the headlights on as you expect. It took me a couple of days to figure out why the screen was so blinding at night.
