It's actually a free jailbreak tweak for iPhone that allows you to open any phone app on CarPlay, called "CarPlayEnable". I'm sure Android has something similar, but would probably required root access on the device as well.

No one is expecting 4k quality. We are comparing prior years to current year, and as someone put it, it's dog s...
I have a corolla as a rental right now, sadly the corolla camera is better clarity than the 2022 4runner.
As someone pointed out, they took a pic and the text showing up is very granular. Something is def wrong with resolution or camera.
Even the image is so distorted on the edges. It's like a fish eye vs flat image from before. U can see the edge trims blocking out the corners of the image also.
Has anyone talked to a dealer about this yet? I haven't hit my first service yet, but I can assure you the quality is worse after owning 2015 2019 4runner and also a live rental car right now with a corolla. Even my buddy who came from a 2017 tacoma was like wtf is wrong with the camera when he switched over to the 2022 4runner.
For those that are saying it's the same quality...maybe some of us got the short end on our 2022? It's night and day difference.

I recently traded in my 2018 and now have two 2022 models (see sig). Both of my 2022 models have MTM and both look pretty bad compared to the 2018. FWIW, since someone was wondering about build timelines, I bought the Pro at the end of January and the ORP last week. So, they are about three months apart.

Same issue here. I just took delivery of a 2022 TRD PRO.......I can't add much to what has already been said, but the quality is horrible. I kept my 2014 LTD and when I put them side by side it's really stunning how the 2022 has degraded the quality of the video.
I have an open line of communication with the dealer on a separate issue. The specs for the height of the TRD PRO is wrong in the ebrochure and when I asked Toyota Brand Engagement to validate the spec -prior to purchase they quoted the ebrochure spec 72" so I placed my order--------guess what it's 77" and does not fit into the garage.....not a small problem.
So I will bring up the video quality issue and wait for the reaction.....I will loop back if there is a high IQ response.

Just out of curiosity, are the front and bird's eye images the same quality as the backup camera? We have a '22 ORP and I think the rear camera image is better than I expected, given the posts on this thread. I have nothing to compare it to, but think it's decent, so maybe it varies from production run/camera vendor to another?
BTW, I really wanted the MTM, but was impossible to find in the S.F. Bay Area, and the dealer said no way to have it added at the port.

Are the cameras different or is the image just stretched on the now-bigger screen?

I would say yes, the front and rear cameras are equally bad. That said, I'm happy both of mine have MTM. It's definitely a cool and useful feature.
I'm curious if the backup camera in the non-MTM models is the same (crappy) camera as with MTM?

Good question. If I remember right, the MTM rear camera is a "predicted path", and maybe has a Pano/Standard mode? My camera is basic, with fixed overlaid limit lines while I maneuver.

Weren't the screens quite a bit smaller on pre-2020 models? If they're using the same resolution camera with a larger screen, it would make sense that it doesn't look as sharp...
Had a 2020 Venture before, and the backup camera was the same resolution as what I have now.

Yes, the screens went from a 6" to an 8". I think you might be on to something. If it's the same resolution camera, blowing up the image by 35% would explain increased graininess. Surprised no one else figured that out
.I have nothing to compare the camera on our '22 to, but I think it looks pretty decent.

I have been wondering if it's a resolution deal... but I don't recall ever seeing resolution specifications for the cameras and the screens...
It wouldn't surprise me if the cameras are 1080p, but the screens are something like 480p or 720p; I think most of the screens have been TFT LCDs for the longest time? Would be curious if anyone was able to find some information on them...
Even in split screen on the new unit, the picture quality is noticeably worse. The moving guide lines are not even smooth and thats not generated by the camera.
Ultimately, it doesnt bother me that much because I'm not the type to backup by staring at the screen. I only look at it to not hit anything when parking. It just sucks for the MTM. Extra money to have a grainy 360 view. Not really helpful when the terrain is mostly the same color.

I came here immediately and found this thread. I was wondering if it's possible to swap the camera? I just traded my 22 orp for a 23 trd pro.
On the orp, it was crisp, clear and amazing quality and full screen in backup mode.
Just got in the trd and whoa, it was like early model backup cams quality... awful! It cuts half the screen off in reverse and is grainy in low light conditions. I thought maybe there was a setting but no.
So I found this and I'm hoping someone with knowledge of how to increase quality is checking this forum still. I'm happy to swap out cams if it is a simple thing.

I have a 2013TE, when its was new anyone that rode with me said the camera was crappy compared to their cars camera. All I know is a i look less now backing up than i did before without cameras, and a i look at an empty dash when backing up my 2001 odyssey that doesnt have a camera. its great for hooking up the trailer though.
Can’t see the part being changed either on newer models. When I changed to an aftermarket deck this year (Pioneer 4660NEX) there was a drastic improvement in resolution from the OEM deck (2017). Also, the new head unit has additional settings for picture quality on top of the base resolution it provides…

Did your 22 ORP have MTM or was it just the backup camera? I'm wondering if the camera is better if you don't have MTM.
