255/75/17 KO2 Pizza Cutters

The main reason was the lateral stability of the 4Runner… with P265/70R17 Nitto TG the truck felt great (for body on the frame SUV) in any turn taking at a reasonable speed…. with Copper AT3 255/75R17 I felt my suspension \tire is collapsing at every turn… the unsafe filling and lean in turns were not acceptable.

Anyone else have issues like this? Is there more body roll while cornering with the 255's, like a highway clover leaf or quick lane changes at speed? I'm waiting on a new suspension to help correct what I feel is a soft/floating ride from the factory and would not like to add to the issue if lateral stability is compromised.

Finally got new kicks on my 2017 4R SR5 Premium. Researched going to 275 or 285’s, but daughter is learning to drive with my rig so 255/75r17 was a nice upgrade from stock Dunlop. For a mud tire, not loud on the highway or street driving. For reference, 2-4 clicks of the volume on radio took care of any extra noise [emoji106] I have Bilstein 5100’s set at 2.5” in front, with cornfed 1.5” spacers in rear. Spidertrax 1.25” wheel spacers all around. Plenty of clearance while driving, minimal rubbing when full lock in reverse both ways. Some nipping and tucking with a box cutter of the mud flaps took care of it quickly. This is my daily driver, all highway, zero off-roading for this guy. I wanted a more aggressive tire than stock without having to chop up the body, fenders and such. When I was researching this tire size I didn’t find a lot of info so feel free to ask questions.

Wtf is that monstrosity on the front

Hello,

What are your opinions on running 255/75R17 on an 8" rim? Most tire specs recommend 6.5-8.5", I'm just wondering if anyone is running it?

I am considering the idea of taking the weight savings all the way and getting the Konig Six Shooters (17x8) wrapped in P255/75R17 DuraTracs.

Daily driver with no crazy offroading (in Toronto Canada so trails around here are hard to come by anyway), the most it will ever see is some MOAB fun once I finish planning a road trip down there. I just love the idea of losing weight (about 10lbs. per corner based on my research) to make the 4Runner a bit "peppier", or at least not making it any worse.

oh man im excited to see 255's on a 8 inch rim... yes the weight savings will be easily felt.

10 lbs to be saved by going from the OEM Dunlops or similar in 265?
I have doubts that the difference will be that much.. 32" 255's are narrower, but the extra height in sidewall negate a lot of the reduced width.
Duratracs' are beefy P-rated tires too.

Oh, missed the part about the Koenig's.. yes, you will notice the slight peppiness and slightly less RPM's for the same speed on highways. Won't be much though, I've taken the very seldom travelled road and put on 235/75/16 winter tires on my 3rd gen and it really isn't felt at all.

Yes, the weight savings would be from the Konigs as the tire weight is almost the same between the stockers and the P-rated DuraTracs (based on tiresize.com). I don't recall where I got the stock Trail/TRDOR rim weight but it is supposed to be 32lbs. while the Six Shooters are 21lbs.

I'm not expecting any miracles but would definitely prefer to not make the truck any "lazier", so any improvement would be welcome, especially with the Konigs being a bit pricey.

What I'm wondering is whether there will still be enough rim protection (i.e. from the offroading equivalent of "curb rash") with the 10" tire (255) on the 8" rim.

Any opinions or pics welcome!

Thanks!

I'm running the SL rated 255/75/17 Duratracs on our 5th gen, and have found zero issues with the sidewall flex during cornering being unacceptable, which was a concern when putting these tires on the truck.

Which rim are you running them on? Would you mind posting a pic, either from the front or back?

Thanks!

Here's the best pic I have showing from the rear, doesn't really show where the tread is relative to the fender edge though. Some 1.25" wheel spacers would really complete the look IMO. It's on my list of things to do.

Here's a pic of 255's with stock Trail (7.5") wheels and 1.25" spacers.

Thank you so much for the pics and info.. The community here is awesome!

From the pics, it looks like there isn't a lot of meat/bulge on the side for rim protection, and that's with 7.5" rim.. 8" may not be the best idea.. Perhaps the TRD Pro rim at 7", but that one weighs 25 vs. the Six Shooters at 21.. Decisions, decisions..

Thanks again, very much appreciated!

Sidewall bulge has a lot to do with the specific tire design as well, different brands in the same size will vary here.

Don't forget when needed, you air them down and bulge will increase significantly.

Because, quite frankly, it looks ridiculous to me....I just can’t get over how bad the slim width looks...

I've got to think... that from 6 feet away no one could see the 4/10ths of an inch width that is missing. Even the sidewall difference is debatable from 6 feet out.

I like it personally.... but that's just me.

that's interesting--I feel the opposite.

When I think narrow, I think offroad.
When I see wide tires and spacers, I think it's just for cosmetics

dont most if not all, off-road race teams, those that have access to ALL the tire brands and sizes us fat, wide tires? wider tires equal more traction.
They may have changed, but last time I seen those that can use any tire sizes use a wide tire for off-road

I will certainly bring this up with my pit crew before I register for the baja 1000 with my 3 ton 4x4 SUV with 32" tires

Exactly, they may have wide tires but that's not for traction. In fact, they have terrible traction being 2WD and rely on the suspension to compensate and only go through the deeper sand thanks to momentum.

For the 4R, the narrower tire will provide more traction than a wider tire when aired down. However, the wider tire will provide more stability on road and maybe also in off-camber situations, which is what concerns me a bit.

Most impo, tire width is NOMINAL.

255s range from 7.5 to 8+ with outliers north of 8.5" actual tread width.
265s range from 8 to 9
285s range from 8.8 to 9.5+

My 265 Wildpeaks are as wide as some 285 tires.

But a 255 Cooper Pro is wider than the stock 265 tire.

Some 255s are really narrow at 7.5-7.8 like Destination MT2.

I would be concerned going from 9" Wildpeaks to 7.7" MTs in off-camber situations and on the interstate. Otherwise I would love to give the MT2 a chance.

But my concern may just be due to ignorance.

Has anyone had issues with narrower tires and stock stance on the freeway or in off-camber situations?
