255/85r16 Let's see 'em!

I'm looking into getting a set of 255/85r16's. I keep going back and forth on how they look. I think they look a lot better with good backspacing so they are at least as wide as the body/flares, if not a bit wider? Most of the previous threads i could find on them are pretty outdated. I'd like to see what they look like on 3rd gens.

I've got 255/80/17, same size tire, but in a 17" wheel. Skinny's are great. Here's a few pics, but lots more in my build. I also run 1.25" SpiderTrax spacers.

Love that! I really think the key to them looking good is having 4" backspacing or wider (wheel or with spacers). When I see them on stock wheels, they look tucked in too much. I think they need to stick out slightly past the flares.

Also, I love that bumper, that's what I'm most likely going with (I also have a black 2001 sr5). Looks like you're going for a very similar build to what I intend (overlanding). Oh and hello to a fellow bama native! I grew up in Oneonta and went to Auburn.

Narrow tires provide better traction off road in almost all circumstance. The outliers being deep snow, sand, and mud where you're trying to "float" on top.

War Eagle! Yeah Huntsville isn't far. Have you ever done the Georgia traverse? It sounds really cool, That's my first goal after doing lift/tires, although I think a lot of it is manageable stock.

Did you do any body lift for those? I noticed there isn't a body lift option on that bumper.

I've heard of it before, but I just now looked it up. Looks like a neat weekend trip. It looks manageable stock to me, but I didn't read a whole lot about it. Maybe one day I'll do the Georgia Traverse. I also want to do the Tennessee Dirt Devil sometime. I've done half of Skyline Drive in the Talladega National Forest. And apparently there's something called the Kentucky Adventure tour.

No body lift for me. Addicted won't do a body lift option for their bumpers. Many people have asked them to, but it's not something they want to offer.

No body lift required to fit this size of tires though. I bent my pinch weld back, sealed it up good, and molded the wheel well liner plastic with a heat gun to match the contour so the tires don't rub. There's a small write up in my build thread.

I've got the Bighorns as well . Mounted on 16" X 8" wheels with -10 offset . No spacers . Had to post a picture from the Great Sand Dunes as well .

I have been very happy with the Bighorn's offroad prowess. I've had them in mud, deep snow, mean (sharp) rocks, dry loose soil and they have performed very well. They do well air downed.

I chose them for; price, weight (low for size compared to others), this is not my daily driver, so it's sees more dirt than pavement.

My only complaints; they are really loud on the highway, suck on ice and packed snow, and wear quickly.

Im a bit surprised with how popular the 255/85s are on Tacomas, especially in the overland/expedition world, that we don't see a lot more on 4runners.

Hmmm, that's a pretty solid price. A lot cheaper than the Cooper S/T Maxx that I was leaning towards. Have you heard anything about tread life on them?

When I was active on the Jeep boards years ago those were hugely popular among that crowd as a budget orientated tire.
